why not condition in the winter??

Just curious as to why alot of you dont condition in the winter is it bad for the dog?? Mine is inside all the time would it still be ok to flirtpole and springpole everyday during the winter??

 

A lot of people don't like to exercise their dogs in the cold. More for the owners sake than the dog.

Winter is my favorite time to work with my dog like Ben said...Ill take the winter of the summer anyday...Then again our winter here isnt much compared to other places in the states...But still..

Care to elaborate on why

 

in the winter seems like they work harder. they need to be more active to keep worm. so makes conditioning a bit easier.

 

Most don't condition during the winter for two reasons:

1) if your dog is an outside dog 24/7, conditioning your dog pretty much allows your dog to burn off excess fat, which would make your dog much more susceptible to the cold. Most people, myself included, do have dogs outside their yard even during the winter time. Along with added bedding, such as straw etc., I find upping the feed and putting on 5-10 lbs. on a dog will make them better equipped to deal with the cold. This, coupled with dogs, apbts included, abilities to grow thicker coats will make them even more suited to last outside and will be comfortable even in the most frigid of winters.

2) If your dog is a house dog, than conditioning isn't a problem at all, provided if you yourself don't mind the cold. The dog won't mind it at all, but you on the other hand might and that's why the others don't condition.

I realize La doesn't have killer winters, but my dogs work much harder and better when it is nice and crisp.

 

In my area the oldtimers say to work dogs for as long as the leaves are off the trees

 

i would think with the colder nights the dogs would burn calories and fat shivering.. making them cut weight a lot faster then expected.
correct me if i'm wrong...

 

it more then i care to explain. in short the organs work harder & it has a effect on it's blood. something that takes time to really understand. there's a downside as well.

Not exactly. The cold nights does make losing weight a lot easier and faster, but the dogs should not be shivering at all, and this is only true if your dogs are 24/7 yard dogs with a chain spot. If your dog is a house dog, this is negligible in most circumstances. In the cold, you should give your dog extra bedding for warmth and if they really can't tolerate it, bring them inside. House dogs, in my experience, take time to adjust to the cold while dogs put on the chainspot since they were a pup are much more comfortable in all weather environments, including the cold.

 

U rarely have to worry about to many cold days in the south!!...it was sixty-two degrees yesterday or the day before!...just perfect!

 

Dogs always work better when its cooler anywhere period...inside or outside!!! It takes em longer to warm-up as well or hit the heat wall.

Unless the dog is kept inside or has a heated doghouse you don't want to keep your dogs lean during the colder months outside...they need that extra layer for excess energy and warmth.

72 here..... im wearing flip flops and gym shorts today.....
