Thare a good tool to use. something different the dog sees and has to have confidence to go over.lots of dogs avoid them...

Are you talking about an A frame like the one in agility? My dog loves it, and I think it helps keep her in condition. I haven't done any other conditioning with her besides agility since I retired her from weight pull this July. I expected her to lose some muscle tone, but she has stayed in nice shape. Of course she's also jumping and doing weave poles, and running. When you train the A frame in agility one of the things my trainers pointed out that the repetitive landing can be hard, especially for dogs that have poor angulation up front, with straight, upright shoulders. Just something to bear in mind. When we train for agility, we either work on dirt, or on rubber mats. Well, I hope this is what you were asking.[IMG]

similar to that one except usually steeper and carpeted.
also the way the dogs worked on it is very different, you just have something to bait him with and he just goes over turns around and over again etc.

I think it's a good work out, but I'd be concerned about the repetitive landings.

you can put a carpet or even crash mat where the dog lands.

I dont think those ridges would be any good for a dogs feet, people usually put carpet on the top of them.

It's usually just to 4ft long pieces of Plywood with a frame of 2x4 underneath. put holes for a chain (or rope) about half way up the 2x4 each side, so that way it won't flop out from underneath the dog, and u can make it steeper if you want...

    functional use ?

any exercise is good for the dogs in my opinion, not sure what functional use it would be that other exercise wasn't. i have never used one, i have dogs that would love it and dogs i am sure would think i was mental to expect them to jump over a 4 foot bit of wood after a hide on a stick. just because a dog excells on the apparatus does not mean the dog is any good for anything elsae.but i do not see what harm it will do to crack on with it.

if you intended to get a dog ready for hunting or a show would it be of any use then?
10 mins on it has my dogs blowin,so maybe it would add some good variation in a routine?
or out of season,a bit like cross training.

it won't hurt but i think a dog could be injured on it moreso than ordinary flirt work so not sure i would take the risk.

i agree,i wouldnt do it regularly for risk of injury although tbh ive never heard of a dog injured using it

The only function of the A-frame in Schutzhund (can't say for agility) was to replace the olden-time's straight up and down wall. Like the French Ring Palisade.

Unless the work you are doing requires that skill, I don't think I'd use it. What exactly are you going to be doing with the dog? SchH? Agility? Search and Rescue? Obedience? Those are reasons to use it... Just my opinion
