Here's my contribution, I really like B&T's and Tri's
It seems Charlie Maxwell got out of the dogs around 94-95 and I believe
I got some of the last, Most of his dogs were B&T and Buckskin

Yes and thats where the black and tan color in the pitbull terrier comes from. another dog used in the make up in the pit bull terrier is the old english White terrier (died out and used in the forming of the bull terrier as wel black and tan tyerrier died out as wel). iN those days everyting that was crosed with a bulldog that would fight asnd bring the bacon home was used in breeding. its been said that the dark spots under neatht the white hairs in pit bull terriers and SBT come from the Dalmatier croses. there are plenty of other breeds used in the make up of the pitbull terrier , but 80% of those crosses where bulldog x terrier croses.
Also lots of dogs from wat people THINK are black and tans, are actualy MASKT dogs. the TAN in these dogs is more of a buckskin. here is a picture of a real black and tan called Dinky Toy that is around today

Dogs Like fire fox Red Bull ecetera we refeur to as Fox dogs altho they DO carrie the black and tan color gene pool up close they are not Black and tan dogs. we do seem to get more black and tan dogs then other famelys of dogs.
And More often with the heavy inbred litters but unluck hase it that we lost a couple of them pups at birth ore when a couple of days old.
we DO consider them a bit Special, A foundation bitch we had called Sioux was a black and tan and one hell of a producer. Her Black and tan Brother called Tusker was a real good one. funny thing is that in the summer he was tru black and tan but in the winter his color sceme changed into the same looks as dogs like Red Bull and his mother. anyway tru Black and Tans are kinda rare..

My friend had an awesome dog located in Mississippi. Rotweiller markings. He let someone in Alabama pick the dog up and breed to him and the dog misteriously disappeared. The dogs name was Cujo. My pedigree on some of my dogs is incomplete until I can find out who Hattaway's Crusher is. Can anyone help?

I can think of a couple lines that throw them. They usually have a long history behind them . I also see some bully bred dogs this day and age that have this coloration. Shoot- I seen an add in my favorite magazine recently that amazed me as to the lines behind the dogs. Anyone else notice that?

A friend of mine had a litter a few months ago that was the oddest colors bunch of pups I've seen to date. 1 black & tan and the rest were liver Merle ( like a German shorthaired pointers colors). The breeding that produced it was hardcopys bohegan x a daughter off retard.
Always loved the look of a black & tan.

The one tight bred line of dogs that carry the trait more often would be the Old Family red dog on the other hand you have yard that produce it often down from one do and those who see it every blue moon like colby did, good post makes you wonder about the lineage of our dogs

black and tan.. goes back to colonial America and pit fighitng days of England... .. I've had a whole crop of black and tans.. back in 2003. Hicks Yoda was what they were built on. Fleig, Colby, and others mention the black and tan in early pit dogs.

All those dogs were 35lbs or less..

Original Bull and Terrier pit dogs were solid red with white along with cow dog, and black and tan.. since the Normandy conquest they're have been pit dogs and from those pit dogs come the small dogs they used in the field and for vermin that later became known as terriers. Later they pulled in brindle bulldogs which were kept seperate until 19th century.. All of this are in books on canine history that are out of print and costly to get, however back in the 90s a good portion were actually in .. wait for it... LIBRARIES.. when a dog has WHITE in his coat it is NOT a black and tan. tru black and tans are pich black with tanonly!!. . dogs like above who tent to look like a black and tan are known as maskt dogs. they ofthen have a blackish brouwn chokolate coat with tanish markings..

Exact! Dobermann and Pincher dogs are black and tan as Rottweiler is black and tan. Manchester terrier is another typical example of this pattern. I really believe that modern tricolor bulldogs have no bulldog blood part in their veins. I know there have been some tricolor pit in past, as there are in present, but is a more ancient pattern, looking less definite, "framed" of Chevalley's/Andrew's Buddy aka Junior.
This is a true tricolor pit with no touch of other breeds:
