I have a 5 month old pit puppy recently diagnosed with severe sub aortic stenosis. Is there any hope for him? The best guess on longevity the vets can give me is 3-5 years with meds. Has anyone heard anything about this new cutting balloon procedure to cure it?

  2. Never heard of this disease. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

From what the vet said it is a narrowing of the artery going to the aorta. Its genetic. Eventually his heart will be damaged from trying to pump the blood through the narrowed artery. I called the breeder. They said they had never had this problem. I don't really think they sounded like they even cared.

    sorry to hear.
Not to be to harsh i would save your dog the trouble and your self.
If she has only has 3 to 5 yrs on meds and it is like you describe with the narrowing of the vains and the change that the heart is getting damaged.
Why do you want to spent so much time in a dog that wil suffer at the end.
Best is to part with the young pup now and be honest that you been good for it and wanted to do good in the future but this is reality and it doesn't look good for the dog to have a dog worthy life.

I took him to Ohio State University. They did an echo. I spoke with another cardiologist at Cornell University. They are one of only two places in the country that do surgery on this type of defect. The cost is prohibitive however. 5000-5500 bucks.

Last Friday night I lost my 3 month old Rottie pup to aortic stenosis. :( Tuesday he got a Echo-Cardiogram and the vet told us he would have 4-5 months to live without surgery and meds. I opted to not do surgery as it's very risky and even at the most experienced hospitals they seem to always lose the dogs during or after the surgery. He passed before we could even figure out what type of meds to put him on. He went downhill very fast. Thursday he was completely fine, and then Friday afternoon he was breathing very heavy. Then that night he threw up, started frothing at the mouth, breathing even harder, then his mouth started to turn blue and he seemed dead. When we got to the vet he was like 95% still alive, but died soon after we got him in. I really hope the best of luck to you and your pup. I know a few people who's pups weren't suppose to make it past 6 months due to heat conditions, but are going on six years now. If the pup isn't on fish oil, it never hurts to start. It's some added protection.

Harley didn't make it. He collapsed and died at 2:00 this morning. I tried CPR, but it didn't work. He seemed fine up til that point, playing like normal last night. We had him on heart meds, but apparently they didn't work. He was 5 1/2 months old.:(

Severe aortic stenosis is pretty much a death sentence.

This can exist in a very mild form to very severe. Those with the mild form can live pretty normal lives.

I'm not surprised that he died so soon and so suddenly.

With a defect that severe, I'm thinking it should have been picked up in the dog as a young pup...how old was he when you got him?

I am so sorry for your loss. Like patch said. Check into your state's lemon law.

    RIP Harley.
