Brooklyn teen faces felony charge in death of family hamster

    – Wed Mar 9, 7:14 pm ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) – A New York teenager has been charged with a felony, with the possibility of a two-year prison sentence, for killing her family's pet hamster, authorities said on Wednesday.

Monique Smith, 19, of Brooklyn was arguing with a family member in June when she reached for the hamster, choked it and threw it outside the house, police said.

Her arrest stemmed from an investigation into the incident after Smith's father contacted the America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said ASPCA assistant director Joe Pentangelo.

Smith is charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals. If convicted, she faces the possibility of two years in prison.

"Sadly, very often, pets find themselves in the middle of these situations," said Pentangelo.

"A family will have a disagreement and unfortunately the animal is the recipient of misdirected or redirected rage."

The hamster died from blunt force trauma, liver damage and a brain hemorrhage, he said.

A grand jury selection to consider Smith's case is set to begin on Friday in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

But if I feed it to a snake and let the snake choke it, it is legal.

I'd probably face a life sentence for all the mice I have 'dispatched' to the hereafter.

HAHAHA, but in truth you should feed pre-killed or at least unconsious to a snake......IF I happened to get em live, a plastic bag and a slap against a table or conc step - they don't even know what is coming. Not that I ever have, I used to buy the frozen kind and I don't even have a snake anymore. :D

I agree, can't hurt something over anger, next thing you know she is setting a dog on fire cuz it pissed the floor or shaking a baby because it won't stop crying.

Two years for killing a hamster sounds like the worst waste of taxpayer dollars. What she needs is psychiatric help. The dad needs a kick to the teeth for telling on his daughter rather than handling his business as a father.

  9. Kill a rat and get 2 years. Buy a mouse trap and get 10 in a federal pen. Kill and rape a 3 year old child and get parole after 2 years. Only in America,, hoooyeah!!!

The US is going the way of Rome, all great powers come to an end, I only wish I could live to see the end of this one.
This is truly the decline of western civilization.
