Akitas

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by David L, Jun 9, 2011.

  1. Yes, it is a recessive trait in the breed. Depending on who you speak to this is either acceptable or unacceptable. Many folks I have spoken with feel the long haired dogs should be fixed or culled, but then again there are many folks breeding the long haired ones just like your neighbor...

  2. I forgot to add you cannot show a long haired Akita so if that matters to you then stay away. It is not like the long hair is detrimental to the dog but it is certainly not desirable if your aim is to have a "correct" Akita.

The long haired dogs are supposedly more laid-back than the shorter haired dogs. Bulldogs and Akitas are like chalk and cheese IMO. If you live in Florida I wouldn't have a long haired dog.

  4. Damon chalk and cheese - I like that! Exactly what you said too many folks think because they can handle a bulldog (or another high maintenance breed) that they can handle any high maintenance breed - its important to keep in mind the two breeds are very different in almost all aspects of owning and training.

But the short haired akitas still have a double coat and the akita would be indoors most of the time.

long haired??? had no idea! well then I wonder what the hell they mixed in to get that. Akitas have a decent coat length to begin with...longer than that??? why?

  12. Know of a guy who fought and rasied game APBT's who used an Akita to guard his dogs and property. He said Pits sucked at guarding, especially game dogs. He said the Akita would always go and start fights with the game dogs and even killed one. He was constantly breaking up fights. Of course Pits are better fighting dogs, however a good Akita can/has/and will kill them on occassion. Pet vs pet, I would definitely take an Akita. Not over good game APBT's of course.

You guys make Akita's sound like devil dogs... Biting their owners and terrorizing the whole neighborhood. They were originally hunting dogs first of all. They were also nanny dogs who were actually left to guard kids! I would definitely NOT trust them around other kids however. DON'T do it. They are just super dominate and have a very high prey drive towards anything small. They are a very over looked guard dog imo. I think they are as good as it gets for that purpose. Unless you want a loud mouth always in everythings face dog. Get a German Shepherd then. Akita's guard differently and have even been known to silently stalk a potenial intruder. When they bark, it's usually for good reason. I've not heard to much about them turning on those who love them, but it would be very disappointing if true. That's more of a Pit trait than an Akita. Akita's are legendary for their loyalty. They will love their entire family, but in general they do favor and highly bound with just one lucky person.

Akita's used to make us money back in the 70's

Idiot's who owned them always thought that their dogs were the baddest ass animals in the world.

As a matter of history the baddest Akita on the east coast was a dog named 'Maximus, supposedly killed a good bulldog that was 40 lbs less than he was, when he was matched into a large bitch named 'Cookie Beast' who came in at 74 lbs he lasted 21 minutes rip!

I know this for fact because I owned the "Beast", the only way that an Akita can dominate is from sheer weight advantage.

Having had this experience and being around that breed I personally think their shit! Wouldn't own one if you paid me, their suspect as pets and really not a very stable breed, I would choose a Cane Corso anytime instead!

Akitas where used for fighting and then hunting. They almost became extinct due to the Tosa as a fighting dog.Because the Tosa was bigger. For an Akita to kill a Pitbull it would have to have a big weight advantage to even compete.Akitas donot make good pets because they are a one person dog usually and they will tolerate the kids in the family, but not other kids. They are not a friendly breed.Pitbulls are not known to turn on their owners. When u train an Akita you will notice they are very stubborn. These dogs are very aggressive. I can't believe an Akita at 120 lbs could even last 5 minutes with a 50 lb Pitbull.

The orginal Akita was under a 75lb animal. Kind of like the Shiba. The Americans are what brought size and bone to the Akita just like the Americans did with Rottweilers etc.

Seems that Americans like to do that, GSD, Rottweiler, Akita etc etc, bigger is NOT always better!

    Exactly.

No other breeds have the athleticism, agility, strength, smarts, and pain tolerance of a GB APBT. And the GB APBT is the only prey on prey game dog.
You would have to handicap a APBT against another breed for it to lose.

You could whoop an overdone mastiff or overdone large dog with a backyard rough cur APBT.

@ blackcloud Nice fairytale, I think you've read too many Stratton books. I've owned 2 Akitas since 94 and they are the ideal pet, believe me. And trust me they are very capable fighters, obviously they are not out and out fighting dogs, but believe me to beat and kill one I know you'd need a decent bulldog

You have owned 2 pet Akitas so what makes you think they are capable fighters? Did yours make the neighbors yellow lab yelp and cry?
I disagree that you need a decent bulldog. A byb rough cur would spot an Akita 10+ lbs and still take it out easy. Stupid to even think or imagine. I just wanted to voice my opinion and I do know about working dogs.

Our first dog broke an German shepherd mixes leg, and I had accidental fights with Rottweilers, mastiff crosses German shepherds etc and his own brother who was owned by our friend and trust me the dog was a killer. Our current dog is not dog aggressive at all p.s I also know about working dogs ;)
