Seems like some people believe everything will damage a dogs kidneys whether its feed or exercise. So I'm hoping we can separate the fact from the fiction in this thread.

    Good subject. I'm listening.

  3. Didn't you know a pit bulldog's kidneys are made out of fine china? Don't even think about touching anywhere near that area on the dog or they may instantly evaporate and/or shit blood out of their ears. You've been warned.

PS - Any legit information on the great kidney debate is appreciated here as well.

sorry for the vague post, i left it vague on purpose bc i have heard some many different things and i didn't want to limit the conversation. Some example are over feeding, to much protein, flirt pole, spring pole, when you feed the dogs in correlation to when you work the dog and so on. I should have been more clear.

Raw feeding don't cause problems, high protein kibbles can though... or so I've heard.

Problem with dry kibbles especially with high protein kibbles is that they have no moisture or water in them thats why its called DRY kibble. Eating high amounts of protein with very little water intake on the dogs part can tax and stress the dogs kidneys as dehydration sets in and can damage the dogs kidneys. Raw feeding, unlike dry kibble has alot of water and moisture in them making it safer then high protein dry kibble. Conclusion in this situation is that when feeding dry high protein kibble make sure dog has a enough adequet water intake. Also you should match the proper amount of protein intake to the amount of work a dog does as a couch potatoe dog doesnt need as much protein as a dog who is working for a field trial competition.

You see the kidneys act as a filter any excess protein that your dog doesnt need gets filtered out through the kidneys as waste, but it needs enough WATER to filter out the waste.

Over working and or a really EXHAUSTED dog will cause muscles and tissue to break down causing waste by products in the blood stream in which the kidneys needs to work hard to take out the extra waste, without enough water the kidneys wont be able to do the job adequetly.

A INJURED dogs body also breaks down waste and needs to be filtered out from the kidneys also.

Now imagine if your dog is Dehydrated, Exhausted and Injured all at the same time? Thats why I.V. fluids is very important to prevent renal failure.

Every individual dog is different, usually a dog with a healthy kidney can rebound fast from stress , while a dog with a damaged or unhealthy kidney can lead to fatel problems if stressed too hard.

Doing bloodwork is one way to check to see if ya dogs kidneys is healthy to begin with.

Thats my tip for the rest of the year LOL.

Can't too much Iron be damaging to the kidneys?

Carprofen (anit-inflamitory drugs) can cause kidney and liver damage.

Thanks ElJayBee, how quick does the damage set in? can you tell right away if you are working a dog hard enough to do damage?

it usually takes a long time. it's more of a chronic process than a sudden one. usually if you're seeing symptoms it's already pretty bad. or at least, that's been my experience anyway.

sooo, if you notice something as described, the damage is already done.
is it possible that the dog can still be worked without killing it?

hydration is key to protecting the kidneys...dry food requires more water intake than raw feeding...adequate water intake is vital...heavy exercise with a couple of dumps left in him also puts by-products back into the system that requires kidney filtration....the kicker is that it will seldom show early, mostly later in life....that is where the myths take off...it is always easier to place blame when the dog is older...age...genetics....etc..etc. ..early blood work is key to finding where the dog is at kidney wise and then adjusting food and lifestyle accordingly....waiting til the dog is 8 or 9 and then wondering why the decline in health is sometimes too late....so my tip would be to ensure the dog is adequately hydrated and close to empty prior to hard work...not a guarantee but it will push the odds a little more in your favor....US1

Great post slim, makes a lot of sense.

  19. Khanfueshus say that is basically what Saiyagin said except for the emptying out part which should be a given in the first place before any work out.

does the dog have to be completely empty, how can you be sure that he is?
