Ukiah, CA -- Of the many issues on the Ukiah City Council agenda for Wednesday's meeting, councilmember Mari Rodin has requested a discussion about a potential ban on certain dog breeds from city events and facilities.

Rodin requested the discussion of policy issues around pit bulls at city events after being contacted by a constituent who attended Concerts in the Park with is wife and two young children who expressed concern about the presence of certain dogs at the event.

Due to recent mauling by pit bulls in the Bay Area and Santa Rosa, the constituent expressed concern for the safety of adults and children at the community concerts, the staff report states.

Rodin has asked for a discussion by the council as to whether pit bulls should be banned from all city parks, concerts in the park, city events, a combination of events, or not banned at all.

The agenda summary report also includes news articles about pending legislation which would allow local governments to regulate specific dog breeds, as well as bans implemented in different areas for particular dog breeds and legal challenges against dog bans.

According to an e-mail from City Attorney David Rapport, included in the agenda summary report, the city could ban pit bulls specifically or all dogs from any or all of the city parks.

Other items on the agenda for Wednesday include a continued discussion about the possible annexation of the Brush Street triangle and a proposed urgency ordinance for a moratorium on nationwide big-box businesses in the downtown Ukiah area.

New business on the agenda includes a discussion of possible licensing for tobacco retailers within the city limits and the consideration of a request for playground equipment at Todd Grove Park, Oak Manor Park, Vinewood Park and Orchard Park.

  2. I wish I could tell the constituent, they should be more concerned with child molesters, rapists, and drug users who leave their syringes lying on the ground. I believe that many people live in a fantasy world, built with BS that let's them feel secure.
