It sounds like you did the right thing in this situation. I don't know how many times I've told people that those type of leashes are for TOY breeds! Retractable leashes are NOT for any dog over 20 lbs. I don't care if the package says 50-100 lbs or not. A dog like that should be on a multi-ply nylon lead at a minimum but preferably a nylon rope horse lead with a heavy duty clasp. You did what you needed to and you were prepared for the situation. That brings us to a great point though... How many people own and know how to use a break stick? If you own a bulldog and can't answer the question above... you might take this as a learning experience and buy one and gain confidence in how to use it properly. You should have one with you any time you are walking your dog because game or not, you aren't breaking that grip with your hands if an incident like this ever happened to you. It is always great to learn from a situation so pay attention to how mydawgs was prepared for an incident and was able to difuse it rather quickly because of it.

    Regards,

    B

  2. I had to make one out of a mop stick because pet stores do not carry them.

If you can, please add links to sites where these can be bought. If you want, express your ideas of alternative to breaking sticks (i.e. nylon cooking spoons from wal-mart, etc). Which are better, wood or nylon? Again, all that know, please add links to sites where these may be bought.

    Thanks.

Well Shit! Mydawgs I guess I'm chopped liver! Don't worry about it. She admitted fault. Her dog was off leash charging at you, as an imposed threat. You let go of the leash bc you where afraid the dog was coming at you. You stopped it quickly, & even helped her restrain her dog. & you where smart enought to have a stick. At least you did'nt have them both with you instead of just Buddy. That would of been bad, very bad MMkay? I'll let you know as soon as I have a gyp to hook up to him! LOL & quit shaking it's so girly!:D

  17. i want to say that i am so glad this was posted. i often wonder what i should do if i ever was in this position...do i let my dog go or turn and try to run (then i would be dragging diesel behind me). diesel and i go for walks and there are very few neighbors around and we stay clear of the ones with dogs cause they are not restrained...they run free. but i always wonder if the ones with no dogs got a new 1 every time we walk. i always carry a breaking stick but a loose dog with no one around is what i worry about. i dont worry so much for diesel but for other unless there are 2 dogs...anyway thanks for this little advice. i wont feel so bad if i ever have to let him go.

I think what happend today with you mydawgs is just another thing of owning a pit bull. I do think you handled it pretty good but if it was ME i would have picked my dog up and wait for the lady to come get her dog and if the dog snapped then let your dog loose. Nothing you could have really done to stop it. Dogs will be dogs and i think you shouldnt get the cops in it because they always make it out to be so much worse. So good job on what ya did. Oh yeah i bet her amstaff wont be in the show ring no more LMAO.
