i reckon im on to a good thing here, was introduced to a guy the other day that supplies a ground up mix of meat for dogs. i was there when he was making up the mix so i can tell its an honest mix of 10% salmon, 30%beef and 60% green tripe. im no expert on nutrition but from what i can tell, all this mix is missing is calcium, which im introducing through feeding ham bones seperatly and maybe a calcium powder. is this enough to get everything i need into a dog to keep him at his best or is there anything im over looking ? thanks

well tripe is somewhat confusing. it is in the class as organ meats, but not really. you can feed tripe as much as you want with no runny stools and some people feed solely tripe as a base meat in there diet every day. and it looks like the case with that 60%tripe mix in your diet, here is a example of tripe as a base diet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDtliKYQ0IM. its not how i feed becasue some of these things this guy is feeding is not readilly accessible to myself and im a bit cheap, but one of the best i have seen. i like bone in my dogs meals myself though because its also good for the teeth. what you will need is a liver or kidney true OVAL meats of any species to be added in that mix their of yours 2-3 days a week. calcium you have that like you mentioned with the bones and you can even add a egg whole with the shell in the mix every day for a calcium source also yougurt, calcium powder and what not. tripe is the best for the dog with the natural enzymes in their too. if you feel your still lacking nutrition throw a 1/2 human vitamin in the bowl every other day and that will offset whatever is lacking. there are many ways to feed raw and there isnt just one right way to do it as i have learned. good luck your pre maid meal sounds good and expencive.

thanks alot hard luck, app. the helpfull reply, i didnt know whole egg was a source of calcium (thought it was just used for protien) every day is a school day ! im also gonna see can i find a cheap source of kidney/ liver. price wise the mix isnt as pricey as you might think but i couldnt say its cheap either, there is no shops and fancy packeging involved as you might of guessed so at least thats a saver to begin with. thanks again pal

depends on how much organ is in there. A raw diet should be 10% bone and 10% organ, half of which is liver. Dogs get important nutrients from organs.

eggs are also a source of fat. a dog needs a minimum of 10% fat when not active and can go up to 50% with working dogs such as huskies training for Ididirod type of races. i would not see any reason to work a APBT that hard though or give that much fat to a working APBT. a active working dog will need 15-20% fat minimum. Some people think that you need to dump a cup of lard to meet the energy(calorie) needs of a dog in its diet, but me myself i keep it at around 15% normally except in the winter when i raise it up.. if you dont feel like you have enough fat in your diet there are many sources to chose from. just dont over do it and ration it out beause they say it could cause pancreatitis when given in excess. i will let other people inform you on fat becasue i got hated on in one of my other posts when the topic came up. helpfull hint though if your not working the dog at a given time and the amount of food you serve increases his weight then you have a good calorie fat/protein ratio in the diet. if you work him and his weight drops significantlly on you and is looking too thin then you need to up the calorie intake. well have fun figuring it all out................lol i know i did...

So confused about feeding Eggs some say RAW EGGS are bad... some say its good ...

  7. Nothing wrong with raw eggs at all, the shells add a lot too. Some dogs you can give whole and the will eat the shell and all, others you will need to break the egg, pulverize the shell into a powder and mix it into the egg.

I agree that you need to add some liver - however it sounds like a solid base for a good diet, if the price is right you might as well go for it and then just add in the needed extras.

Personally I don´t think any of raising a dog with BARF!
May it would suit for an adult dog (even though there´s plenty to consider if you want to avoid serious faults that could and do harm your dog!).

First of all is the calcium : phosphorus rate!
This has to be in a certain proportion that you just can´t detect within BARF!
If you have to much phosphorus in it the body can´t take the calcium of the feeding and therefore uses the source that´s already there! Worst case could be gum bones!!!!!!
If you have to much calcium the body can´t take in the phosphorus and this can seriously harm the muscles aswell as some blood containments!

You´d be better of to get yourself a decent dry kibble that fit´s the need of a medium to maxi puppy and feed it at least until your dog is fully matured!

The easiest acessable are f. e.Pro Plan or Eukanuba but there are plenty other good ones on the market.

These two mentioned are just two examples of easy accessable ones!

I feed the raw diet many years- whole chicken, big beef bones, raw eggs, beef and pork heart, liver, soft grinded vegetables etc- with out any problems. The most important fact is all must be fresh and stricly sanitary.
