Does anyone know anything about the american bulldog I have been offered a pup from a couple who just found out there having a baby so don't have the time or money to look after him (I always have plenty of time) any tips as am thinking about taking him in because I couldn't see him go to a shelter.

I used to have one. Do you know if it is a Scotts, Johnson, Old Southern white?....I had a J-type so I will speak about those. This is a good website www.realjdjboard.com for Johnson dogs. They are good dogs, depending on what you got, can get pretty big, 70 to 130. The Johnson stuff is used more for weight pulls, bite work and gaurding can be hard headed but loyal to family and good with kids. If you use the search there are a few threads about Am Bulldogs here. If you want to know any specifics feel free to PM me. Good luck.

My brother had a hybrid, I can tell you that they are awesome dogs but health is a huge concern. If you can meet the parents of the puppies and maybe find out about health testing. Those dogs suffer from a lot of health problems. They can be dominant with people as well so you want to make sure the parents are stable that is why it is so important to see the parents. Overall, they are fun dogs that love to play and also like to act as watch dogs.

It would be in that same range. Do you know about how much they weigh? They take a good 2 to 3 years to really fill out and finish growing. Check out that site, real jdj board, it is a site dedicated to pure Johnson and Johnson type. It will help get all the answers you need.

Why does the height bother you? I think you should be more concerned with temperament and health rather than looks IMO.

I own one. He's not the smooshed in muzzle type. He basically looks like a giant white APBT. He has muzzle to him, which is a good thing for when he's out catchin' pigs. He has a wonderful temperment with us, but he does not befriend strangers....of course him being a guardian breed, that is typical. You do have to be FIRM with them just as with any bull breed, because they can be very hard headed and stubborn, and with them being so big, that could become an issue with an inexperienced or unprepared owner. He's a great dog. He's at about 90lbs solid I'd guess. No fat. He's only a year old too, lol. His daddy is titled in weight pull, and bite work as well. I think if you stay firm with him, he'll make you a nice family dog.

You should check out True-Grit it's a wealth of info. Johnson dogs were bred primarily for property protection, so they can have heightened people aggression, Standard/Scott dogs can be dog aggression, people aggression neutral, the hybrid can swing anyway, I prefer Scott/Standard myself, less health issues, I' know of a few Johnson and hybrid dogs that have died in the summer heat . If you've had pits before like me, you'll be ok, just train it.
