Starting out - needing some advice

So, i've been researching and learning all that I can about the breed. I've been researchin since I got out of High school, and now that I'm out of college I would like to obtain a dog of my own. The only problem is that it's pretty hard to find people who'll trust someone new.

With being out of college I finally have a career and can support my wife, myself, and children and probably a dog. While I was in college I settled for a pet, I had two adopted dogs that both had apbt in them, but of course they were adopted so there's no telling what they were. Even though I loved these dogs to death.. I always wanted a working dog.

I don't know why it is that I would like an apbt over a dog who's past I know nothing of, but I guess its my respect for the breed and its roots; it just makes me want to raise a dog that could better the breed. Anyways, I've been interested for so long and the more I learn the more I love this breed and would like to successfully obtain and raise a dog of my own.

I know its hard to trust anyone new with dogs produced by yours with your name on them... but man is it hard to gain that trust coming from outside of this community. It seems like you almost have to be born with these dogs.. going to shows, getting invites to different yards and whatnot. Makes me feel left out ha, and then there's where I live too, no real apbt breeders or meets/shows out here in Northwest Arkansas, so its hard to just go see dogs and whatnot. Well, lmk what advice or tips you guys have.

Also, sorry for the long post.

Tom Garner sells and ships anywhere in the world and he breeds some good ones. Prices are steep but what else can you do if you don't have anyone who would sell you one. You could also use the search feature on this site there are some kennels listed. Good luck

Thanks, and yeah I know where to buy dogs from I guess. Just not sure what is good quality.. need some guidance I guess, but it's hard without anyone who knows his stuff locally I guess. And looking through bloodline discussions doesn't really help cuz there's so many ups and downs to each line.. makes it hard not being able to see them in the flesh I guess.

Yeah, I did that for a bit too, but the closest shows were in Texas. Was like 6 hour drives, and I wouldn't even be participating haha. I guess gotta start somewhere though.

  6. There's an ADBA show in Texarkana. They usually have it every other year. They didn't have one last year so I'd say it's a safe guess they will have one this year.

man i guess you do live in the middle of no where...lol, btw whatever you go with try to avoid brother sister breedings..or any other inbred dog.

Konked what's up...: don't worry about bloodlines. You should be proud to own a GBAPBT from any line that comes from decent stock. On the papers you will be able to track back to great dogs and great men so in that aspect I would be proud to own any. Not like your about to open up shop on a yard and your looking for your foundation.... Not this day and age

I'm sure there are quite a few that sell pups....

Some say garner is a peddler that sells paper win untouched dogs or dogs easy streeted. Others say he produces dogs that can and do compete.

Your not too far from good dogs and weight pull and show events. Just network.
Don't buy the cheapest or the first or from what's available. Learn what you want and Get it even if you have to wait. Good luck. I hope I can help.

Hey thanks BoogiemanBlood. I'll have to look it up on adba's calendar, or would I have to get the gazette again to see this show's schedule?

Thanks for the tip as well labulldoger, I've read lotsa different opinions about inbreeding, but I'll take your word for it. Imo inbreeding could result in some good things, but it's risky I would assume. What about linebreeding?

Good advice BBT. I've read a lot about Garner too, and most of the things I've read have been negative. I don't like to post my opinions much since I'm not the most knowledgeable, but knowing what you've said makes it not seem as bad of an image I had of Garner dogs. I guess I just have to look more to find where these people and their dogs are.

Don't buy a dog form the web antill you see it in person because the picture may look good but when you get it is not what you thought so my advise is go see the puppies in person and get what you like

Buddy, theres good dogs in your backyard! Best i can suggest is star goin to your local shows (or u may have to do some traveling), regardless of what u have to do........do it! Your not gonna find what your lookin for on this site because there aint too many folks that will fuck with strangers (n i dont blame em!). You nailed it on the head when u said "you almost have to be born into it!" Folks would rather see the everyday pet owner WITHOUT these dogs because they lack the experience, respect n capability it requires to successfully n responsibly raise these animals. Plus the question arises....why want these dogs? Unless you wrre born into a yard setting, or a sportsmen of some sort what applies to you about the breed? Other than wanting to own americas most controversial dog breed? Or status symbol, or maybe just a bleeding heart that wants to love the dog aggression out of the animal?
If it is any of these reasons, dont get one! but if your post is sincere and your willing to keep n handle your dog like your supposed tothen i will say this, go for it, dont settle with the first guy willing to take your money. Make the effort to actually SEE the dog with your own 2 (unless its someone u kno n trust. Which prolly aint the case or you wouldnt be here askin this question) & other than that..........good luck!

What happened to the two dogs you had in college?

Rockstar: Oh yeah I forgot to mention about the dogs.. One got ran over while my parents were watching it while i was outta town for a funeral, and the other died from some unknown cause. Took it to the vets and everything and they gave us medication and whatnot and it just wasn't enough I guess. Now that i've grown older and with the mistakes I've made with the previous dogs I think I can be more responsible.

Laced wit game: I don't plan on breeding; I just know I want to somehow better the breed. And just as you stated, people who love and respect the breed wouldn't want someone who was inexperienced handle them. That's prob why I want to find someone.. or something like a mentor to help, but even that's hard to find hah. The reason why I would like to have a dog is because I know where they came from, and I know what they're bred for, and I guess since learning about them.. nothing else really compares I guess. I was an amateur boxer and Idk, its just something about being bred for a certain purpose appeals to me. I'm not gonna lie.. I think AmStaffs and SBT's are really pretty dogs, but knowing that they were bred for the reason of show just doesn't compare to being bred for well, what apbt's are bred for if that makes any sense. I guess to sum it up.. I want one because I want to have the real thing and because I want to better the breed by raising the best apbt ever... Idk if that makes any sense hah.

  17. I must say that your post was well thought out. You covered all the bases and sounded very eager to learn and own a "GAME BRED" Pit Bull. I cannot help from reading your posts and your previous experiences with the breed that it would be a perfect thread for someone associated with law enforcement.

The part that really sold me on this idea was the whole Garner dislike thing. I mean someone that has owned rescues, goes on the internet and decides that all he has heard about him is negative. I guess Frisco and C'man were nothing.

Also, really liked the idea that being in Texas, there aren't any breeders by you. That sounds strange as well.

Check the local newspaper adds an rescue another one!
So if you aren´t about breeding or showing / working do you really need a ped on your dog?????
As you don´t want to travel to visit kennels that sell to the public that´s the way to go!

    And please..............
What do you mean with don´t trust newbies???????
    What are you about???????????

He said he's in NW Arkansas, not Texas. But with that said, just cause you don't see em, don't mean they ain't there. There are good dogs and dog people near you. You just don't know it. May never know it. Who knows.....
