    Stud Dogs

When visitors come to our yard, the first thing they notice are the shear volume of dogs we own. The number stays over 150, and the family basically breaks down into 3 lines. These are Eli, Carver, and Jeep-Red Boy-Rascal. We have others, but these three are the majority.

Often the question arises on how we determine who will be a stud dog, and why we chose such and such to breed and not match. There are many factors to consider when making a choice like this because your stud dog's blood will be infused heavily into our breeding program. None of us want to raise 80 dogs from a certain line that end up being mostly culls!

Breeding makes up a major part, but we'll be the first to tell you that some breedings look good on paper but fail to produce dogs fit for the neighborhood circuit! The same works in reverse. I've seen two dogs that shouldn't produce crap, throw aces! For the sake of uniformity, I recommend you start with a well-bred dog though.

I often look at how the individual dog performs as well as how game he is. His mother plays a major role, and I prefer a good bitch that herself is from a good bitch. It is not written in stone, but for us, all of our studs are from top of the line females (who's dams were also top of the line).

A good stud should be pre potent, and you should see a high percentage of his traits in his pups (I.e. color, disposition, and build). I feel that no matter how you breed a good stud, he'll dominate the genes of the female, or at least accent it.

For example, if we breed our stud RAGHEAD, he'll throw red, brindle, black, or buckskin, and this is regardless of the color of the bitch. His pups will be early starters with a tendency to commit fratricide in the brood pens. Many of his litters produce pups that kill one another. Don't confuse this and think that this means they'll be game! It's just that he was like this and so was his sire.

On the other hand, a stud like KOTTONMOUTH will throw pups that will live together in peace for well past a year in most cases. His offspring rarely are started before 15 months, and will most often carry his trademark grin. If kenneled with RAGHEAD pups, they get dominated from the food and are often seriously hurt.

When both of these dogs' offspring reach about two years old, they are evenly matched and make for some exciting rolls. So you see that two dogs of different breeding and demeanors can both be good studs. They just take different routes to the same point. The common denominator is that both are extremely game dogs, that come from proven, and pre potent dogs up close.

Often the trend is to run and breed to a dog because at the time he's highly advertised and recently on a roll. Every once in a while, success is had this way, but often times, he's a flash in the pan and doesn't cut it as a stud. Better luck would have been had if a bitch similar to his dam were bred to his sire! Carl Lewis doesn't have a world-class son, but Carl's father does!

Most of the dogs that are shown can destroy their sire. I know for a fact that with us it is so! Many of the dogs I see could probably destroy a lot of the best stud dogs I know, but can their offspring compete and win with regularity over the offspring of the stud? Dogs like MAYDAY and JEEP were phenomenal, and were never beaten, but would be worthless if they couldn't produce dogs like themselves or better!

I've also known dog men that refuse to tell themselves the truth and continue to breed to a stud with pitiful win percentages in his offspring! One dog man has a dog that won 3 low budget matches in the same weekend and has been breeding him ever since with terrible results! Then there are also dogs like a Smith's BANDIT, who stopped, but keeps on producing winners!

It is good to keep track of as many of the records of a stud's pups for as much accuracy as possible. When a trend begins to appear over a period of time, you can then make a better determination whether your stud is producing well, or not! If the desired traits are few and far apart, don't be kennel blind and continue on the wrong path.

We look at dogs and try to select a specimen that we think is an ace Bulldog. When we all determine that he is the total package and will be impossible to beat, he'll usually end up as a brood male! The only exception to the rule is the ace that still has both parents alive and producing!

I'm not an expert on genetics, and I know that they play a major part. I more so feel that being born with the natural ability to guess what breeding will work is the true mark of a good stud selector! Also, a selector of a good stud dog needs to be a dedicated mathematician. Percentages are more important that the dog that is only known for the one good dog he has produced.

No sure fire technique can determine if you've selected the right dog. If a dog doesn't seem to produce well, there are always brothers to him that may fair a little better! Hopefully, some of these tips may help you in your selection, and you'll be on your way to test your luck at winning in the fast lane with dogs you've bred.

That is still very true the Raghead dogs are early starters. Not too long ago some Snakehead PUPS killed a littermate.

    DP,
I would say just a couple breedings. I would find it very difficult to continue to breed a dog if their first couple of litters sucked. The stud in question would have to be a phenomenal animal that was really well bred for me to keep trying. Most dogs are not brood dogs - no matter how good they are. You should definitely see things you really like off the first breeding of a dog. Truly prepotent studs produce with almost anything they are bred to. But, truly prepotent dogs are very rare indeed.

  9. I always like to breed to at least 4 bitches with a prospected stud dog for a couple reasons,Phenotype and Genotype. If for some reason the bitch your breeding to is Homogenous Black for example then from the gate it will show all pups to be black so this being said regardless of what the stud is BB-Bb-Br rr etc all pups will be black so if the Stud in question is Fawn Black Mask, Red Red Nose then Phenotypcially speaking you would be hard pressed to know right away if your stud dog is prepotent to said litter.

Genotype Takes more time for the most part to really tell if you stud dog is truly dominating in a case like this.I believe the true genetics, mannerism (IE:smiling, hard to house etc) of the pups will take longer to show. It's just something that you can't see with just the eye to start with in my opinion.

And lets not forget environment it has a huge role in my opinion on how the pups may or may not turn out, schooling, care, socialization etc. This in itself can determine to a certain extent on how well your stud dog is rated on his ability to produce. If a young dog is not given a chance to reach it's full potential then it would be at best unfair to say that stud dog just couldn't produce. Like Benthere said truly prepotent dogs are very rare indeed.I think the most important thing said in this article is that The common denominator is that both are extremely game dogs, that come from proven, and prepotent dogs up close
Also the better you know your line of dogs and what your breeding to will always give you a leg up.

yall want to make your studs better this is no shit! breed only good bitches to him be picky, dont breed to every kid that has a few hundred in there hand, breed some what in there fam of dogs not so much pure so ta speak but if its a eli dog try to breed to bitches with some eli in them . again not lar san kid with 500$ make sure the bitch is a good bitch this is self explained. and this is the biggest part keep a few and check them yourself out of each litter, like stated its all in how and who the pups go to that makes a diff, aging if fat pete feeds when ever his fat ass get to it, or slobin bob cant pick up shit or keep dogs with clean water, dont breed to them and dam sure dont sell pups to them. UNDERSTAND good !
