The dog in "The Yearling" who fought the bear was an AmStaff...

If you are talking about the dog in the original movie, then it has to be the ugliest AmStaff I have ever seen!!! I'm 99% positive it was pitbull.

I've heard the name of the movie but had no idea what it was about. Now I really want to watch it! lol Lot's of bears up here in Canada. They just pulled one out of a garbage bin in VANCOUVER! Big honkin city and in comes this bear looking for some munchies! lol

Be so kind, as to point us to your source of reference. I in no way claim to be a "know it all", but this is the first I've heard of this. The movie came out in 1946, and the AmStaff was only recognized as a breed in 36, so could you please post your source of reference.

Wow! That live footage was unreal. I'm going to have to check this version out the remake I seen had a bloke in a bear suit with 2 stuffed corgies sewn to the arms getting swung around like the robot from Lost In Space. Still a good movie though for the scenery alone.

Sure, but may take a while to find the article...unless we could contact Stratton somehow.

I believe Strattons on FB, if you think that may help... If you do contact him, ask him what he found, that changed his original statement about the dog. just curious.

Mr. Stratton's article on the AmStaff used in "The Yearling" is in this month's issue of SDJ.
