I have my mutts go do their buisness in the same spot everyday. Its all dirt and tho I clean up the crap everyday, I obviously can't the urine. So can you guys recommend a solution (I was thinking maybe bleach and water??) that I could spray n the dirt to die down the smell? Thanks

Man, I'm not a fan of all those chemicals, but I suppose maybe that is what has to be when you do chain spots...I don't. My dogs are kept in chain-link kennels and I've taken care of dozens of dogs that were kept in kennels. I CAN tell you that they ALL begin to smell after a while -- whether they are on concrete, gravel or dirt. They begin to smell if they are not let out of the kennels regularly to go roll in the grass, shake themselves, run around etc...they clean themselves if allowed to! I can imagine chain spots present unique problems....

I WAS talking about the chemicals on the ground the dogs have to live on -- be exposed to and smell constantly....

I've noticed dogs DO start smelling if they are left in one confined area for a long time. They smell better and the coats look better if they are allowed out of their chainspot, kennel, whatever - to go roll, shake, run around at liberty and "clean" themselves! I understand the limitations and advantages of the chainspot, this is just an observation....and I'm just not a fan of exposing dogs to thinks like lime and bleach....I understand why it has to be done, I just prefer not to do it that way....carry on!

No they don't live outside. They are indoor dogs...but when I have them go to the bathroom it in a certain spot.

yard deodorizer any products out there?

i had this problem also awhile back. i didnt mention that i was also using bleach/water mixture to try to hinder the smells in that post, but it was not cutting it. i went and purchased some Sweet pdz stall refresher from the tractor trailer supply and it was what i was looking for. its basically just like the lime were it gets the ph levels down but it also makes it smell 10x better. the kennels i will spread about 3 cups of the sweets pdz once a month, as i dont have a problem with the kennels smelling. i usually let them out to piss and shit. the fenced in area attached to the porch which is 15ft wide by 50ft length begins to smell after a bit, as they consistently piss over each others markings. i use the sweets in this area as a spot on were i feel the smell is coming from. the rest of the yard gets the regular double strength lime over it since the regular lime is cheaper to use like that. i still use the bleach about every 2 weeks in the yard and in the kennels. i should use it though every week, but im satisfied with the way im doing it. there were alot of products mentioned in that thread though that was both a disinfectant and deodorizer combined. the sweets is only a deodorizer.

the sweets pdz i use about every two weeks(as a spot on to the areas were they pee the most)and the regular cheap 50lb bag of lime spread i use once a month generously since its so cheap. the bleach/water is a must and like i said i use it about every 2 weeks, but i think it should be done weekly. the piss smell is not pleasant at all i know how you feel lol. since i been doing it like this the smells have been managed thankfully

Not sure where ur from, look for jeyes fluid, use it in my backyard, anyone I know with dogs uses it including the local dog pound, it cleans, disinfects and doesn't smell too bad. U'l prob get it in a good supermarket or hardware shop

The lime is a great smell killer, but make sure to get/use the hydrated lime, cause the regular lime will eat away at their pads. Had a buddy ruin a few of his best dogs by bein careless and not reading the package before using it and assumed all lime is the same, don't make the same mistake! Most places carry the hydrated lime in 50lb bags for about 8 bucks.

If your looking for the best non chemical solution to the problem Vinegar or lemon juice do about the same as lime without a harmful residue being left behind. As stated by someone above the goal is to keep the PH Balance low, anything thats biodegradable and high in acid will lower PH.

Thanks again. Obviously I'll try the non-chemical way first and if that doesn't do it for me, I'll try the lime.
