I am interested in knowing if there is a bloodline that is known for its brains. Now, I know in general APBTs are smart dogs, but is there a line that has proven to be consistently smart AND is there a line that is known for not having the sharpest tacks in the box?
This thread is not intended to knock any lines, but I am truly curious about this. I know there are exceptions to every rule, but there has got to be a rule too, thanks!

  2. Do your research around the board. Use the search function and read some of the things said about certain performers. Check out the stories. Stay away from the dogs that are thought of as Dumb Game.

I don't agree with this at all. I bred to a dog that was nothing but game, but he threw dogs with the total package. The Tennesseean said "He couldn't bite his way out of a wet paper bag, but he doesn't know it. He thinks he's winning all the time he's in there."

HUNTER RED is the dog I'm talking about, and not only is he ROM, but he threw the total package consistently. Not only did he throw winners though, he also threw producers as well.

Thanks. I had a show APBT years ago and she was the smartest dog I had ever seen. Looking to add another dog to the clan more along the working lines and just doing my research

  5. In my experiences dumb game meant dogs that only had there gameness. The thread is asking for dogs that are extremely savvy athletes. More cerebral then anything else. Like the Bolio strain.

good post lil mayhem and yeah they say some of those redboy dogs woud scratch into a bus. TWICE lol. A dumb game dog is a dog that doesn't know when to stop and a dog that is nothing but gameness is called a game plug. 2 different things.

Most answers on this thread are flat out retarted. Stay away from dumb game dogs? Really? To dumb to quit? Etc. Etc.... I'm ashamed to be part of the Pepsi generation. Only dogs with ability should be taken to the big show however gamness is the essence of the breed. Damn a ruff cur. Dumb game, game plug , whatever the fuck you wanna call it , breed that game mofo. Them oldtimers knew a thing or two. Wtf more young fold don't listen is beyond me. Ruff curs are a dime a dozen . A game dog is rare and by far more valuable.
The only good answer on this thread is that Bolio dogs tend to on avg throw a high percentage of smart dogs.

The op asked which line threw brains, wasn't clear regarding what for. Parlor tricks maybe?? Getting his beer out of the fridge?? Sit, stay, roll over? Would not single out a particular blood line for being more intelligent then another, because I've seen good and bad from different lines.

The more time you spend with the dog is how you get them smart. I have seen smart dogs in all the strains. Hell every one says turtlebuster dogs are dumb mine is crazy smart I talk to him just like a person. But if he sees another dog you can throw all them brains in a sack and throw them out the window. Its all in what you put in is what you get out.

I have also found turtlebuster dogs to be very intelligent especially when it comes to problem solving. At times it can be a pain in the ass but intelligence is an important trait imo

Thanks for the input, some good info. I have had a problem solver in the past and it was a blessing and a curse. Could get in real trouble if not properly contained

Like J said u have to stimulate a dogs mind to maximize their potential but you can see some dogs have better problem solving skills and learn faster than others. Some people are just smarter than others and dogs are the same way.

I second that. The Colby/ Heinzl crosses I've had, all very intelligent.

Bolio was mentioned aswell, mine seemed to take a while to get there, but when they did, it was surprising. Used to say "oh, look who grew a brain!"
