I have a Doberman who has had Demodex and was treated with Ivermectin for at least six months. After clearing, she still has thinning hair, and her coat was not soft. I should also add I did swicth foods a few times. They are now on a high dollar food but she still had the issue. The issue for her was a Thyroid problem. I am not sure how common of an issue that would be for pits, but it is fairly common is Dobermans. I had a full T4 panel blood work done to diagnose it; cheap meds and it is clearing up. The test is not cheap.. I think it was 140 (when I lived in VA, I would imagine the price would be different depending on the area.) You can try googling thyroid disorders and see if it fits the bill. Good luck.

Stay away from the steroids if possible.

Good idea to check his thyroid (full panel).

If no answer there get a skin biopsy done- more expensive in the short term, but most likely to get you an answer.
