Was just wondering what you guys thought of words like Pitbull, pitty, ittty bitty pitty, pit? When I say "pitbull, pit" I'm not referring to someone on GD saying it because more often than not we know they are referring to an APBT. But when your average person says it, they don't even know what an APBT is (most of the time). Personally, I hate the words pitty and pit and esp tty bitty pitty. So, was just curious what you guys thought?

I think things should be called what they are.

agreed, no wonder the general public cant properly identify an American pit bull terrier...their owners cant either

I agree. What I ment to say was..ok for example: My neighbor came up to me and said "I love those blue pits. I like the really short stocky ones." Obviously he was talking about an bully. So, what do you think when peopkle use the word "pit" when they are either talking about another breed or they use it as a general word for a bunch of other breeds.

I'm sorry so are you saying that someone like myself who IMO owns mutts (because I don't know how they are bred) and calls them mutts thats wrong? Do you think that any person that owns something that looks like an APBT should call it one? Maybe, I don't understand what you're saying.

imo a "pit" is a pit dog. pibbles winds me up..lol. you can have an apbt that is not a pit dog. the word pit is not generally good for the bull breeds,

Then maybe thats what my problem is. When I hear APBT I think one of a couple things; either a pit dog, or a dog that they know how it was bred and is a working dog. To be honest, when I got my first dog I was just as ignorant as the next idiot. But then a few years ago, I found this site and since then have been reading a lot and asking questions and talking to people who have been into dogs for a long long time. So now I think when I hear someone say I have a pit, I automatically associate the word with a working dog.

oh no, i agree with you 100%. if a person doesnt know how theyre bred call em a mutt or a mix. im all for being specific
    call a bully a bully
    call an amstaff an amstaff
    and so on

pit is something ya put deodorant on, and the term pitbull isnt doing anyone any favors.
just open the paper, or use google search you'll see.

Here in Arkansas we won't be able to call them any name of the sort because there really close to banning them in Hot Springs.

If I talk to someone who doesn´t know about the breed I say Pit Bull, American Pit Bullterrier or Pit!
If I talk to someone who is also within the breed I say Bulldog!

Doesnt bother me a bit. I dont need every Tom, Dick and Harry in the street to know what I have. As long as they think its a lab/x its all good! :)

i see that side of the coin as well.... for obvious reasons i dont take my dogs out in public anyway, theres nothing worse than folks seeing a "horrible pibull" hitting the end of a leash screaming at another dog....or a cute wittle kitty...or a squirrel...or a rabbit.
i recently moved to town (ugh) and aside from one neighbor that ive known for years, nobody even knows i have dogs. i like it that way

I hate to hear that,it seems a new town is considering a ban all the time.

    That's the way i am,online I usually say APBT,to friends just a bulldog

imo, pit bull ( 2 words) should refer to the APBT only. as far as all the others in regards to the breed, it's a 'pity' they're even used! ;)
    agreed: they're insulting
