Shy and Nervous

Discussion in 'APBT Bloodlines' started by thegentleman, Nov 7, 2012.

  1. A buddy and I got to talking about how some dogs are more shy or nervous than others. I'm wondering if this is a trait coming from certain lines? Anyone noticed this in their dogs ?

I've had a few dogs that are/were shy/nervous but also had their close relatives that are/were not. My guess is all lines probably throw some shy dogs.

seen shy dogs like that in really tight bred redboy dogs(mims) and seen it with tight bred sixbits/maverick stuff.......own a tight bred mims bitch(redboy) you would have to run down on the chain to rub her...lol

My Frisco dogs tend to be shy but not my Parker dogs. My Frisco dogs are definitely not dog shy though.

It's a trait. Doesn't mean you can work with it. Exposure, socialization and patience is key.

I have had them from pups and socialized the hell out of them even standing at the grocery store by the door where people are walking in and out! Looking like a panhandler and it still didn't change anything.. I can't stand that trait..

try taking them to a park are play ground where there's alot of noisy kids. I haven't try this but was told to put them in a kennel and put alot of soda cans in there so everytime they move they constantly hear the noise from the cans. don't know how this will help with humans but dude says it works. I have seen pups raise in the country back in real rual areas act real shy & scared when brought to the city where they hear alot of cars & blowing horns & kids playing. & after a while it goes away.

Socialization def helps. Some dogs end up being completely fine and some improve a little but sometimes that's not the case.

Ya that's what I've experienced too.. I had a good bitch raised from a pup did a ton of socializing. Everything was fine then she went through that stage when they act goofy and right at 7months old it was like a timer went off in her head and she was terrified of anyone that wasn't family. If I had a friend stop by and we went out to see the dogs she would be so terrified that she would no longer even recognize me or my voice she went into a fear barking and would probably bite someone. This same dog was a absolute sweetheart with our family but scared of everyone else., RIP. Good tip with the cans thanks

Have had a couple bulldogs(a male & a female) that were shy/nervous. Both I raised from pups. The male was good around people until he got older. He would have shy & nervous spells. He was a house dog until the day he bit a guest in the face. Fortunately the guest was understanding about getting bit in the face. I was so embarrassed, pissed, nervous...etc.

Next bulldog I own will definitely have to be emotionally stable.

Tight Big Red/jeep breedings. Mostly shy under 1 year and at 4 yrs then 6 lol ...I guess shy dogs are ok as long as they like bait and are not shy to other dog friends and cats. But as one has put it here, "I can't stand them" too.
