I had a well known dog man tell me years ago "son I can sell em a hell of a cake but ill never give out my recipie" it's something that stuck with me when looking at pretty peds now this was from an old school competitor just makes you wonder if this was common practice back in the hayday

I have always said yes, especially if one were out there competing as well. I can't see the point in revealing all and then having to look across at your own stuff on show night. S

I don't believe that since the days of Carver, have many, if any, done this in bulk. Perhaps a dog or two along their way.
These are things that one who peddles dogs would be more concerned with than someone with a closed camp of people. Nowadays, people mainly keep their things from getting out by being private.....nothing on blast to the masses. It isn't a chore of secrecy as much as it is just remaining off blast.
Two things come to mind. One is, that if you have a small, quiet yet active association with just a chosen few, the discretion involved should usually keep you from running into your own, given it hasn't been strewn out to the hungry throng. It shouldn't be, if you keep your circle tight and closed.
Second is, that it is truly no one else business how your dogs are bred, if you don't want them to know, and aren't exchanging them for money with anyone. If you do, then they should know, be told the truth etc. But if your circle is as I stated, that isn't an issue, anyway.
Is it food for thought? Yeah. It is, but moreso based on the fact that lies are lies and the motive for such doesn't matter. Decisions always are always the concern of the buyer.

My two cents on the subject it this. If you have confidence in yourself as a dogman then it dosent matter if you go into your own stock or stuff bred similar. You should know that even if you bred, raised, socialized, schooled, fed, conditioned and handled Gr Ch Art and another canmp had a clone of Art that you would still get the win. I think there are far too many variables that can be controlled instead of worry about rather than if some one has some of your blood.

I don't think one's reasons for certain policies of their own have a lot to do with "worry" regarding others or competition as a whole. I think it's just a matter of individual discretion, preferences, priorities and choices they make for whatever suits their modes of conducting their yards. I think that the great majority of the time, it's as simple as that.

Give two people the same paint brush, I bet you get two different pictures.

From what i know its common to pretty up your peds, in certain areas of the states, by keeping the names of the dogs along a similar line. IE, pure Sorrels, pure Eli or pure Redboy or pure whatever. So if you are looking at a very pure pedigree and the dog isn't an inbred looking freak then chances are high that there are outcrosses in that dog that do not show up on the ped. This is common with students of the late greats Maurice Carver and Earl Tudor. In Most other areas of the world people just put the dogs on the ped that went into it. I think its definitely more a peddler thing than trying to keep the "secret recipe" from people.

and that's why it shouldn't matter if someone else is running similar bred stuff, it may be totally different in work ethic. And thats also why there is no need for paper hanging unless you are a peddler.

It is two different perspectives. If I am the breeder/founder of a certain family/certain line I do not want my dogs going into one another. At best I can only win 50% percent of the time. My winning percentages would always suck when two of my own squared off. I would rather it be my family against the rest of the world. If am the match guy, I would not care what I went into in the least. It would be all weights and dates. Period. The gray area is when the breeder is selling his dogs to people but at the same time still matching his own dogs. He still enjoys proving his dogs as well as himself are the top of the food chain but there is limited reward in beating one from your own camp that was sold as a pup. ON one hand you get a win, on the other hand the dog quit because of its breeding,etc...etc..etc..S

    Dog Food for Thought,

Fake Pedigree or wrong puppy from another Litter???

Could it be possible that the Recipes are the Truth, but that Puppy never came from that Litter???? what if the breeder had 2-3 litters all in the same kennel??? what if the breeder got the puppy from Tom Dick and Harry from down the block, gave you that pup with the real Pedigree, the Pedigree is right but that puppy is a mutt???
