Hi, My all white baby girl has raw red spots on her ears. I took her to the vet and he said they were "Hot spots" from her scratching them, and just told me to watch her... But her poor little ears are hurting her she scratches them and whines ALOT. I've tried switching her to a raw diet, back to organic food, I clean the ears with some meds the vet gave me, and even bacitration on them when there really bad, but I was wondering if there might be anything else I could do for her. When I put baby lotion on the tops of her ears the spots seam to heal, but the insides are still pretty bad.

Everyone that claims all white dogs don't have health and skin issues should read this. Good luck with your dog. I don't know what to tell you. I know duck and venison are the two most safe foods to feed an animal with allergies. Aside from that you should invest in a nice victorian collar to try and see if you can get them healed up. First off, go buy an e-collar (elizabethan collar) from your vet or from Petsmart. Then put it on your dog. This will prevent your dog from being able to scratch her ears & will stop the cycle. Then you can apply a light hydrocortisone spray to them & if you need to, give her some Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) to help with the itching. 1-2mg per lb of body weight. Good luck.

The hot spots are just the secondary problem. Something had to get your dog scratching at his ears & that's what your vet & you need to figure out. Did your vet swab your dogs ears & then check for a yeast infection or even ear mites?

Yes the Vet did swab her and scrape for mites, she was negative. I think it may be a food allergy. She was on Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, and it has so many ingredients in it, so I'm in the process of switching her to Calafornia natural, it's a lamb and rice organic formula. I hope it helps. Thanks for the help...

could she have an allerie to something? could some anti-histamine or benadrill help? we once had a dog who had an allergie to something in the house and would scratch all the time. our vet said a bit of Benadril would help. that's just a suggestion, i'm not an expert or anything.

Mia gave good advice. Also, it might not be a food allergy. One of my dogs is allergic to something inside. Whenever hes on the chain, hes fine. As soon as i have him inside, within a day, he is scratching his ears, and if left inside his ears will start to turn red and get scabby. The whole litter is this way. The working pups out of the litter that are kept outside are fine, the ones that are kept inside have skin problems.

Try the Diphen. twice daily to get it under control (with the E collar until the spots clear up), then once under control you can try one tablet a day as a maintenance, if it gets worse, go back to twice daily.

white dogs have sever skin isssue and can be allergic to anything, shampoo's to carpet deoderizers, to food and anything, hard to tell, i have a few white pitbulls abd it's always something, maybe just minor issues but make pretty dogs if you take care and are careful with things that they have allergic reactions to..

Thanks for all your help. I've switched her food to a lamb and rice she was on before the skin problems, and I bought some drops for her ears from our pet store that was highly recommended. When she is scratching bad I give her 1 benadryll and I'm hoping it will clear up soon, she is miserable. Her big ol ears are all swollen. :( bur they do not smell. And the red itchy spots are even on her legs now. I think we need a new vet, anybody in the CT area know of a good one? I think mine is Pit biased... But I'll let you all know. Thanks for the help :)

Yup, as stated, the hot spots themselves, are not the problem, but are the result of a problem, yes, USUALLY allergy related.
With food, however, it can take awhile to actually detirmine what the actual culprit is. By switching back, you may have curbed the problem. In the mean time, go with the advice already given=collar and benadryl. Moniter her actions, and see, if by switching, the itching subsides.
Allergies are tricky, and one of the number one problems owners bring their dogs in for. Keep an eye out, and, if nothing changes, testing can be done. Luck!
