OK, so I did a search, read the fight prevention sticky, read the linked articles about breaking up a dog fight (usually about 2 cur dogs fighting) and feel that there is a dearth of info regarding 2 game bread pit bulls. Furthermore, the material about 2 pit bulls fighting is based upon the assumption that the person has breaking sticks.

This post is about one person, with no sticks breaking up a fight between 2 dogs that love to fight. I certainly am no expert, and I am sure I will get flamed, but my experience will be valuable, especially to those who do not have the physical capabilities to stop a fight.

I always get a laugh from the humaniac claims that a dogs' desire to scrap is the product of his upbringing. Raise him right, socialize her right, etc., and she won't fight.

WRONG!!! These dogs fight for one reason: They like it. After breaking them up their tails are wagging like crazy. And after that first fight, a switch goes on and it never goes off.

OK, so, I have 2 goals with this thread. One, I want to get good suggestions, I want to learn. And Two: I want people to understand what it takes to stop a fight w/ no sticks.

All right, lets get into the meat of the argument. First, I need to apologize for my next paragraph. It will seem that I am bragging but people need to understand what it takes even for a guy like me to break up a fight.

I am an arrogant jerk, but physically I am a bit of a beast. Only 5 9.5, but 235 lbs at 14% b fat. 38 years of bodybuilding. I also have 15 years of martial arts training, in the same disciplines as guys in the UFC. I boxed for 3 years. I am an old man, but punch very, very hard.

So, I work from home and my dogs follow me from room to room. If I am on the computer they get as close to me as possible. They poke their heads in my lap no matter where I go. My female is a snuggle bunny, will sit in front of me and whine until I let her onto my lap. My male will just sit as close to me as possible and keep flipping up my hand until I pet him.

Game bread pit bulls, and I have owned a few, are very, very affectionate.

My female is not very athletic. Does not have a particularly hard bite, but she is game. She went an hour and 20 minutes 7 lbs up hill in a yard accident. My male (son of Champion Crazy legs) Is bigger, way more athletic, and bites like an alligator. And get this: She starts 100% of the fights. She is constantly dry humping him, shoving him away from me, etc.

On to the last fight. So, in the house I constantly monitor my dogs. If there is any sign, I immediately step in and crate 1 dog. Even so, a fight still happens from time to time. I broke an expensive chair breaking up one last week.

So, yesterday I was in my back yard on poop patrol. My female was at the fence firing up against the neighbors dog. She has a lot of health issues, and is 6, so I let her fire up for a bit to let off some steam. Suddenly, my male, who was at my side took off after her. He started barking at the neighbor, and my female attacked him. I ran across the yard, but by then my male had a hold of her head, and was shaking out the hold.

I grabbed both by the scruff of then neck, spun a complete 360 and threw both of them against the fence. He let go of the head hold, but I was not able to keep her from coming back at him, and she got hold of his left shoulder. He was able to turn in and got a leg hold on her and started shaking it out.

I grabbed him and started punching him HARD in the base of his head. I have KO' many guys, big guys with the same straight right. If I hit a human like that, it would kill him (which is why the UFC makes those kind of punches illegal). After the third punch he let go. I lifted him up, and my female was coming hard. I did a teep/push kick straight into her face. She was knocked back, but started coming again. I spun and threw him, snatched her up and put her on my shoulder.

I jogged her to the house door, threw her in the kitchen, got in and slammed the door.

I put her in her home cage. I let him in, and put him in his cage.

I then started disinfecting he wounds. OK, so what advice don the vets have for me.

My dogs are constantly with me. I do not want to have breaking sticks on me 24/7.

When outdoors under my supervision, I think I will carry sticks. In the house they are next to me at all times, so 98% of the time I will stop the fight when hey start making signs. Maybe I should have sticks out, and placed in various places throughout the house.

Second, and most importantly, what does this ^ mean for a gal weighing 110 lbs? What I concluded my self is, I am not going to own 2 dogs when I no longer have the ability to throw 125 lbs of dogs 10 feet. I am getting older and my day of dead-lifting 500 lbs are almost over.

To anyone new to the breed, your sweet cuddly dog will someday get his switched turned on. Don't think that socializing him at the dog park will change that fact. Actually, that is the most likely the place where the switch will get thrown.

2 game bred (bread lol) dogs running around together, what could go wrong?

Walk in the house, grab a beer and lawn chair, wait 10 minutes and your 2 'game bread' dogs would most likely stop and stare at each other.

Cur em out a few more times and before you know it they'll be dog park safe.

:party0051: how about separate the dogs entirely? This sounds like a bad situation your planning for the next fight. Seems to me like you are setting them up to repeat past events then get mad at them for doing what you know they will do. Don't punch your dog bro, punch yourself. Next time one of your dogs might get over/under that fence then they will put your dog down.

Where are these dogs situated at the time of the yard wreck? It matters a lot as to how you break things up.

I'm sure I am not the only one thinking it but this just seems reckless and irresponsible on your part. I don't say it to be mean or anything like that but you said in your post the female starts fights with the male. I am no Albert Einstein but if you have 2 dogs who are known to fight but you let them around each other freely in the yard like that you were asking for it to begin with. All of this could have been prevented.

Your "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" post is right on the dime, Familydude. And 305. good post as well.

Jitsu, you remind me of the guy whose wife is always pregnant because he doesn't understand what causes it. I find it hard to believe you are so dim that you don't take preventive measures when you know damned well what will happen if you don't.

This is why I say the dogs aren't the loaded guns. The owners are.

Brings to mind the old song. "Awe, shut up, silly woman, said that reptile with a grin......You knew damned well I was a snake BEFORE you took me in"

I'm beginning to truly believe that one of the most UNcommon things in the world any more.........is COMMON SENSE.

    1.....responsability.......NIL
2.....2 "game bred" dogs running loose together.....STUPIDITY
3.....NO breaking stick at hand CARELESS
    4.....Punching ya dog......Cruel and needless
5.....Throwing ya dog through the air down right insane
    etc..etc....
lucky you only had to disinfect a couple of wounds, not get broken legs or dislocated joints after throwing ya dog.
6....most people in these cases...1-2 minutes seems like an hour and 20.
i can see the panic in your eyes from hear lol.....

do not put you or your dogs in this situation, and at some point if you relly need to be prepared. a couple simple chain set ups around the yard and a breaking stick, atleast hanging by the back door easily accesable if not in hand can go along way. do not panic and start abusing your dogs, theyve done nothing wrong, you are the wrong do'er here. simply drag them to the nearest chain spot, clip one to it and part them with your stick, takes a little doing as im sure 90% will understand lol...
i would like to think by now you miay change your ideals for the sake of the dogs atleast, thats only because i like to think better of most people than they usually are.

If it was not clear, my post was intended as more of a warning.

I was doing poop patrol. As I was picking up poo, my male was next to me, following me. No matter where I go, he is stuck to me.

My female was across the yard, firing up against the neighbors dog. Normally, my male will start firing up before he starts crossing the yard. There has always been, in the past, about 5-6 seconds before they start fighting, and I am easily between them by that point.

This time, there was absolutely no warning at all. He just bolted, and before he got there she squared off. He got 2 barks in, and she hit him. This has happened a bunch of times, and I always had sufficient warnings. This time was different.

And yes, I am going to keep breaking sticks in the back now. I am also going to keep them handy in the house, pair in the bedroom, kitchen, living room.

A few years ago, I used to teach Jui-jitsu to this gals son, and in return, she traded massages (she is a registered therapist).

I built what I thought was a bulletproof pen with steel chainlinks, and the bottom links were double re-enforced. My female was in the pen, and my male was on a tie out. She ate through the links and re-enforcements (broke a tooth) I was gone for an hour and a half. According to my neighbors, the fight was more than than hour, so hour and 20 may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it was definitely more than an hour. Another neighbor must of called LE, because they came out the next day.

I showed them the kennel and hid the used ringers and they said don't let it happen again, and that was 4.5 years ago. I also got some nasty letters from the humaniacs who finally believed that I was not the center of a dog-fighting ring.

My female is game. I am not going to breed her, so I have no reason to lie. I have no idea if my male is game. He has everything else, his daddy was Champion Crazy Legs, and in he has a hell of a pedigree.

    My new pup

Would he quit? I have no idea.

Couldn't edit above post, but I also agree that you should never hit a dog (attacking a child might be the only reason, and in 20 years I have never seen this happen).

I have hit my male twice in 6 years. Once, I lost my temper after he used a $400 custom made grind guard as a chew toy. I slapped him 3 times and deeply regret doing so Both times, the fault was mine. If I were perfect, I would judge others, but I am not.

Also, keep in mind, if you hit your dog the the most likely injury, will be your broken hand. The first thing they teach in boxing is to hit with only the first 2 knuckles. If you punch someone w/ the other 3 knuckles you will probably break you hand.

The next thing they teach you is how to generate power. Power comes from hip rotation. I spared once w/ one of Mike Tyson's' training former partner (my coach was from the cus Damatto camp). He pretty much beat my ass for 3 rounds. He was 6'3, I am 5'9.5. However, I got in a straight right hand that dropped him.

He then proceeded to use my head as a punching bag, lol. Keep in mind just how hard the head of a 65 plus pound dog is. 3 shots to the back of the head would kill a human.

I have come to the conclusion, that in the future, I am only going to own 1 dog at a time.

I think you are on some power trip pulling that chuck norris stun. This wasn't the first time this happened so that should have served as a warning. How long does it take to run and grab a stick really? Even if you don't own one you are aware of them and could have grabbed a knife handle and wrap a towel around the blade or use some other household item. Grabbing them and throwing them around and punching them sounds like a good way to get bit in the process let alone internal injuries to the dog for punching them and maybe getting some animal abuse charges filed against you as well. The whole paragraph with your KO reference sounds like some macho shit if you ask me. I would give you the benefit of doubt and say you paniced and handled it terribly but you clearly thing this is the right way of handling it and trying to make this a sticky lol. Lesson learned buy a fucking parting stick and make it clean next time not some goddamn maniac.

What is this "paniced" of which you speak? "Make it clean next time not some goddamn maniac".

That syntax is much more painful than getting punched in the head.

    Illiterate much?
