mouth vs game

Corvino's Braddock is one of the most illustrative examples of a great dog.
He had the mouth the hold, and the gameness to last. 14XW speaks a lot of his quality.

Most important aspect in who decides a winner, however, is the keep.
Carver once said he could give Ironhead to so and so and if anyone wanted to win money, bet on the other dog.
Point being, a better dog can lose if it were conditioned wrongly.

The useful comparison isn't between a dog trained with a springpole and a dog conditioned on a slatmill. The useful comparison is between a dog conditioned on a slatmill only and one conditioned on a slatmill with additional springpole work. This would of course be more meaningful if the two dogs were genetically similar, and with all variables of care made the same.

The opinion that a dog bites hard because he wants may well be true, and a lot of people say that. But to say that bite work is utterly useless simply hasn't been proven.

Its not needed to win in the []. That has been proven.
So why do it at all?

If one feels he has to use amateurish tricks like springpoles to get a dog [] ready, you are bringing the wrong dog.

It looks cool on youtube, and a nice toy for easy show "conditioning"...not practical or useful for a sporting dog. Just my thoughts.

Yall's dogs... Do you what you like.

    On Any Given Night

    Into the night we venture
    A silent vow between us,
To the fringe and back again
    society doesn't need us.
Only a few will get the call to travel and place bets,
Reminiscent of an older time when dogs were more than pets.
Arriving at venue to view the nights events,
Gameness is the purpose, so let the games commence.
All in corners about to go and perform their deadly dance,
    Will strength prevail tonight,
or will gameness have a chance ?
What happened next was an awesome display, the stars aligned just right,
For the few who were in attendance there, on any given night.

its better to have a dog with game than with mouth because if that dog has no game its not gonna have the drive to finish its opponent my dog rockheart has game but no mouth I would choose him over any dog with mouth and that's because I know hell do his job no matter what

GAMENESS can give the Blues as well as take the Blues in order to give the Blues.

MOUTH looks for the door when he/she can't give the Blues.

Game is what separates this breed from all others. Without it, you might aswell breed poodles. I mean a Rottweiler bites harder than a APBT. That's fact, but would he jump a wall when the tough got going? You betcha. Sure you may win one or two with a hard mouth dog over dogs that aren't skilled. But a skilled game dog will take him to a place he's never been before and cause him to do some serious soul searching.

Gameness would be my top priority in a dog. Unless a dog has a super mouth to finish the job in short order.....Gameness will always rule.

I'm not picking on you G4G, but what if the hardmouth dog is skilled and game?
Fact is a super game bum with no other positive traits won't last long against a super hardmouth with just a few ounces of gameness. I don't really understand this thread because the idea is to have a complete athlete that can do everything. Not only have a dog with one trait or the other.

Bounty I agree, the total package is what we all want. And that's what I personally strive for in my program. However, game is the building block of the breed and should be the foundation of your program. Say I had a hard core game bulldog. A hard mouthed freak took him out late and I had to pick up. Later, say I had the choice to breed to either bulldog, Id pick the game hound that lost. I can always find mouth. Game is the hardest trait to capture by far. Personally I've owned both types and a combination of both types. I've seen a heavy handed hitter KO his Game opponent fast. I've seen a Gane opponent hang in there and gas the heavy handed hitter to where his hand wasn't so heavy anymore then the game opponent took him to a place he never been before and caused serious heat in the kitchen and the heavy handed opponent was looking for the exit. There's a difference between smart game and stupid game. Stupid game can win on a fluke, smart game can win because he knows how. He's consintant. I'm sure I will have lots disagree with my post. But that's my experience and opinion,

I've heard it said, and agree, "If a dog doesn't have ability and skill, with the gameness, all you have is a glorified roll dog."

IMO the % of gameness in the breed dropped when money became the goal, rather than preserving and bettering the dogs. If you could win without deep gameness, why trouble yourself with selection?
Barnstormers usually have field days against gamer dogs that lack the skill and ability to make it the first 30 minutes, when the barnstormers wreak havoc.
It's when a deep game dog with the skills and ability comes to the show that the barnstormer dog meets its demise "and cause him to do some serious soul searching."
Ha, that is a good one, the soul searching part.
