Root Canal Vs. Extraction

Hi, my 2 year old pit-bull broke her upper 4th premolar. My vet said it was the biggest tooth in a dogs mouth. My vet gave me 2 options either root canal or extraction. I have no idea which procedure to do. Extraction is a lot cheaper than root canal but I just want to do what is right for her.

It's your money but for myself I would just have it extracted. The dog will be fine with out it..

My girl broke one of her upper canines. I had the root canal on it and had it capped. A few weeks later she ran into my other dog's head while playing ball and snapped it right off above the gum line and broke the incisor next to it as well. She still has no problem catching hogs. The root canal will make the tooth more fragile. IMO, just have it extracted.

yep --think back to the dentist days - them root canals hurt for longer than an extraxtion.

..just as said above...get it pulled...all that fancy tooth work is only for show ring dogs/etc/etc....and will end up costing a-lot of your money...

wow seems like everyone voted extraction. thanks for the input. Has anyone had that molar extracted?

I would do the extraction myself just seems like a waste of money especially for a dog that chews on everything. The maintanece would require more money. One thing I would add is attend any other issues the dog might have while putting it under as it makes up for majority of the cost.

I would not do that with with that particular tooth. It has the deepest roots when talking teeth and the root gets into the maxillary sinuses. You can really fuck that dog up trying to remove that particular tooth without knowing what your doing. JM2c

AGK is right. Vets just aren't oral surgeons for dogs. Very few, anyway. Extract and your dog will be fine after a few days of soft food. He'll give you a few post extraction instructions. Just follow them and your dog will be none the worse for wear.

I think he was saying he agrees with others on extraction. Not doing it himself

Thanks everyone for the advise. It seems like extraction is still the best option. Will probably schedule an appointment to extract it on Monday.
