There's an ad in an old Bloodlines Journal from early 1900's: Dog for sale $100 (a princely sum at the time) or open $3000. That's a dogman. The drug dealers never last, the high rollers play with cash they have already won. Not trying to discredit the average sum player especially if his little is a substantial proportion of his all. But for every win, the next show could be for twice as much, so staying on one level is no excuse.

But Mike got that money based off what he had already done. He proved he was worth that

Thanx tiger:)...not true cajun Jordan was getting paid from the beginning
On September 12, 1984, Michael Jordan signed his first NBA contract with the Chicago Bulls. It was a 5 year guaranteed contract with two option years. The whopping total was for a little over $6 million and that included a $1 million signing bonus. At the time, it was the third highest contract ever given to a rookie (behind Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon). In 1984 the salary cap for the entire team was only $3.8 million.

Yeah but by 97 he proved he was worth that plus more that's why he got such a big sum. If he had just turned out to be average he wouldn't have got that much. I haven't I'm my lifetime see any one dominate a sport the way he did basketball

Exactly my point! The best player ever got the biggest payday ever....you can argue that was his incentive.

I Geuss you could argue that as an incentive but imo all the incentive in the world can't produce something that that person doesn't have from the beginning. Did he get paid because he played like that or did he play like that because he got paid like that?

good discussion and being in the middle I see how it can see both ways...
more money brings out better competition which man and bulldog evolve...
but I am sure alot of greats either dont get the opportunity because of money or they find extreme compition at a working mans wager...
never the less I wouldnt know but like to learn others opinons...

money doesn't bring out better comp . and there is 2 gr ch's out there that no one mentioned .

It's true that dogs dont know what they are competing for and its false that everybody that plays for big money use it to hide from better dogs. Way back in the day you could not call Ex- Gr Ch Sweet Jones' phone if you had less than 300K, and he lost going for #9 or 10. Just like you cant knock on Titiere's door for less than a certain amount. Nobody can say these dogs werent top competition.

OG who are the 2 GrChs you are talking about.

You mean arguably the best player ever in the NBA? And that's the 72-10 season. The BEST RECORD EVER.. The yr he won his 6th ring.. Looks like he was worth it. That was like a GIFT to Mike for MAKING THE NBA WHAT IT WAS! The Bulls were the team to beat EVERY YR MIKE WAS ON THE TEAM!! If you're old enough, you remember the hype Mike brought everywhere. He sold out baseball games and couldn't hit the ball off a tee... I'm a Shaq fan btw. My point was he didn't play for money, HE EARNED THE MONEY! Mike played to destroy the other team, heaven help they had a guy he didn't like!!! Mike/Kobe are among the toughest competitors I have ever seen. Neither one will go down as "overpaid talent" like those other guys I named. I'm really talking about their winning attitude. Gimme a yard of Jordan/Kobe "minded" dogs any day.

Winning was his incentive! Did you hear his retirement speech?! Dude would have laced up RIGHT THEN if he could have! Mike was about competition first. Period. He wouldn't have been happy makin a lot of money and losing! Did you watch him on and off the court during his career? What did he spend his money on? Gambling. The man is a competitor til the end, always wanting to win

He proved he was worth it! Rookie of the yr, rookie allstar, playoff birth, top five steals and top 3 scoring. Who was better in that draft?

Nobody truly knows a pro athletes incentive. You said Lebron needed an incentive? Jordan didn't? Why did Lebron take a pay cut to play in Miami?....I'm playing devils advocate here lol just an interesting discussion:)

Btw I think Lebron is better then all of them:)

After getting max money and the crappy performance Kobe should've retired instead of embarrassing himself...why did he need to be paid so much the last couple years? If of course he was doing it just cause he wanted to be the best?
