Why is it so hard to find a good quality dog for a reasonable price. $300-$500 for a puppy is crazy, I know you get what you pay for but this is insane, puppies for $400, $500, I paid $200 for my male APBT with papers and he is the best dog I have ever owned, not a breeder never would be I just appreciate and love the breed but these prices and the money peple are trying to make off of dogs is out of control. NC has to be more reasonable than this I'm not looking to start a yard just want a good housemate for my buddy. I know a guy in Hillsboro NC that sellss dogs for $700-$1000 dollars and he has as much knowledge about the breed as I do, not saying I know nothing but I'm no breeder I leave that to the old school experts that have carried this breed on their backs with hard work, thanx for all you have done to perserve the true APBT.

While Alot Of People Dont Sell Pups, Occasionally Some Dogmen Do. As Raising, Training, Feeding, Showing, Etc Can Take A Toll On Your Pocket Book. Now, I Dont Sell Pups, But, I Have Shelled Out Some Ca$h For A Dog Off An Excellent Yard. I Think Some People Keep There Prices A Little Higher To Make Sure People That Purchase The Dogs, are The Right People, & Know What The Dogs Are Worth. They Dont Want There Good Dogs Going To Byb Who Are Gonna Bred The Crap Outta Them (this Is Also Why Alot Of People Farm There Dogs Out To People They Know/trust).

It All Depends On What You Are Looking For.

400-600 dollars is perfectly reasonable for a puppy from good parents/lines with an intent. Some people are willing to pay 1000 bucks or more for a pup off good sires and dams, I wont. The $400 pup and the $1000 pup have the same chance of turning out to be a good one, and I'd rather buy two $400 dogs than put all my hopes on one $1000 dog. You know? With that said, if all someone is looking for is a good housepet/companion, you may be able to find them cheaper under spay/neuter contracts and such. The price of the pup really shouldnt be an option...since you should have $$ saved up previously in case of health problems and such. The initial purchase is going to be alot less than vet bills, etc will cost you if you dont know what your doing with a dog. Even if you do, you need to have a fund set aside for major health problems that can happen at any time. What happens if that new pup gets Parvo, or gets hit by a car.....that is going to cost much more than the pup itself.

Rusty: $300 - $500 for a pup registered w/ a reputable kennel club is an excellent price! There is a site that figures the cost of raising a litter & I think the total cost was over $4000! I know any pups I sell go for about $400 & every litter I've ever had I've come out in waaaayyy in the hole!! So I can tell you from personal experince that a breeder selling $300 - $500 puppies doggone sure ain't in it "for the love of money" & they doggone sure ain't getting rich! Ask my bill collectors, they will tell you! [IMG]

If you are looking for $200 dogs I urge you to check out Pit Bull Rescue Central. There are plenty of great dogs of all ages & colors looking for forever homes & their adoption fees will be more in your price range.

So far people have given excellent statements about price & whatnot. Also, if you're not interested in breeding, then find a reputable kennel with dogs you like & speak to them about this point. I've only "sold" 3 puppies but I did so to friends who had no interest in breeding, so I spayed/neutered the dogs before hand & had the price much lower than if I would have sold the dogs unaltered. The owners have the papers & all & I believe one of the dogs pulls with the IWPA. So sometimes you can get a well bred, registered pup who just happens to be fixed for a much better price than what the owner/breeder would have sold the dog unaltered.

Also, check out www.petfinder.com & www.pbrc.net . You wouldn't believe the amount of gorgeous "pit bulls" of every shape & color waiting for homes.

Good point Mia. I have sold many registered bullies that were S/N for about $150.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

and at that price for a spay /neutered pup, its more like giving them away..after you factor in all costs of fixing ,vaccinations, etc..

LOL. Tell me about it. I sold mine for $200 & it cost me more than that for their dewormings, 1st & 2nd set of shots, the surgery, & not to count the dog food those little piggies were eating. :D

But hey, I've acquired 2 gamebred dogs myself in the same way (2 out of the 5 catch dogs). Nothing wrong with it.

For the people selling dogs for 500 to 1,000 your buying their name or some blue cur. Quality! not quanity is the key Bro!

I think people sell dogs for high prices because they have bills to pay. the most I would pay for a pup is $300. If the high priced ($400+) dogs were actually worth as much as they are being sold for, why are they being sold? I think the internet also plays an important role in prices also.

  13. we got our dog for free from my brother in law, he has both parents, and when my dog had pups we sold them to good friends, where we knew they would be well taken care of for 100-200 bucks. My main concern was that they didnt end up in bad homes.

Price doesn't equal quality no matter how low the price might be nor how high. You are only serving to continue that stereotype with your comments.

2 of my best dogs were GIVEN to me by great dogmen. That's right, no money was exchanged, only the promise to give the dog a great working home. So you can't say that you don't belive someone can get a good APBT for $150 just b/c it hasn't happened to you. Very rarely does money exhcange hands with me & the people I deal with over dogs.

location, i feel is another factor in prices. if ur in a state that is not really known for game-dogs, of course u could sell ur pups higher than others because there is no competition. But if ur in a wonderful state like i am (NC) u know everybody and there momma sells pit bulls, so some prices will be higher than others and some will be lower. ya feel me?

How true! One of my all-time best bulldogs only cost me $150. On the flip side of the coin, look at these $1500 bluffs.

Pups are simply sold for what the individual can get for them; $500-1000 is not high for a quality pup! I would gladly spend $1000 + from a breeder that is consistently producing quality dogs then spend $50 on a pup from someone that’s never produced one good dog much less litter after litter of them even if both was from the same lineage! Breeders with consistent winning dogs and proven tract records can and should charge more for a pup. Trouble is most are minimalist in this breed and fail to realize the "purchase" is the cheapest thing about these dogs!

I too would pay the price if I were getting a pup from a yard the is consistently producing quality dogs.

Yeah have to agree with you there too. Purchase is definitely the cheapest part about the dogs.

Imagine if you could get a pup for $700 and thats all the money you ever had to invest..... wow... I love wishful thinking.

if you want to bring something into your yard that you don't have and no one you know has then you should expect to pay for it from even a very reputable breeder who isn't "in it for the money"........i have been very lucky to meet great people over the years as I have only paid for two dogs on my entire yard, the rest were gifts
