The AKC says about one-quarter percent of its 2002 dog registrations were for pit bulls of one sort or another. The CDC says that over the 20 years up through 1998, "pit bull-type" animals were responsible for about one-third of all deaths from dog attacks. (And we guess that, for every death, there were 10? 20? hospitalizations and horrible lifelong scarrings.) Think about that. One breed representing about 0.24% of the dog population caused about 32% of the deaths. That astonishing ratio is why we are here.

We are a public interest research group (PIRG) that supports breed specific legislation (BSL). This Yahoo group is restricted to people who would like to see these monstrous animals banned or at least strictly regulated, and is for the purposes of pooling our knowledge, honing our strategies, and rallying support. We won't waste time with argument about whether the problem with pit bulls lies with the animals or with their owners. If that's your schtick, there are about 100 other groups on Yahoo that will be happy to hear from you.

We expect most of our members will be invited to join, or will be direct personal referrals, but if you share our goal, then by all means send us an email and ask to join us--but (because we expect to come under attack by pit bull owners), please expect and forgive one or more questions to confirm you really are on our side of this issue.
