Removing Ticks

I recently found quite a few ticks on my female today. I found none on my other dogs, so I sprayed them down with Adams Flea & Tick spray and treated my yard with a pesticide.

However, there are still about 3-5 ticks still on my female. What's the easiest way to remove them? I've been putting petroleum jelly on them to loosen them up, and then plucking them off with my fingers. Is this effective?

I've had flea problems before, but never ticks. They seem to be popping up a lot lately, any reason for this? What attracts them? Left out food? Or are they just attracted to dogs/people?

For those of you who have housedogs, what preventative do you use? I generally don't like using things such as Advantage, but if it works, I guess I will.

    Thanks for your help.

  2. I use frontline plus from the vet on my dogs and they never have fleas or ticks. Your best bet is to get some on all of your dogs and this will kill the ticks that are already there as well. It works so much better then the sprays and topicals you buy at the regular store and if you bath them in oatmeal shampoo ( I use baby aveeno bath ) the frontline plus stays on and works for 3 months.

I have a lot of deer in my area and they bring the ticks. I use k-9 Advantix in the summer months to keep the ticks off. If a tick does get on the dog they usually die within 24 hrs and fall off.

Frontline every three months during their season (which started fairly early this year due to the weather). To remove them I use tweezers, and make sure and grab them at the head. Put in some tp and flush down the toilet.

We've always just grabbed the tick as far down towards the head as possible and genly pulled them out. Once out, inspect to make sure you got the head with it. We've never had one come out without the head, but it happens sometimes. A small piece of skin often comes off with the tick.

I have also used tweezers to pull a tick out. I heat up the tweezer end, grab the tick by the head and pull straight out. I think the heat makes em back out a bit too. Last year my boy had a tick on his butt hole and I wasnt goin over there with tweezers...lol. I used the Advantix and it died and fell off.

The tweezer thing is a good idea, but you can snap their heads off and they get left in the dog doing that if you are not careful. When I was little, and would get a tick in my hair, my mom would light a match, let it burn for a sec, and blow it out and immediatly touch the tick w/ it. The heat from the match burns the tick and makes the tick open its mouth to let go, then gently pull. A tick can cause an infection if the head is left in the body of the og. This has always worked for us. Was recommended by a vet.Try it and let me know.Wooden or cardboard matches???I dont know, we always used cardboard.

Frontline doesn't kill the eggs it also doesn't keep Ticks off the dog it paralysis the tick so that it can't feed, the purpose of it is to keep the tick from passing any diseases to your dog. It does work, but if you have a large tick problem other measures need to be taken. There are lots of ticks here in AZ, a lot of the time you have to go and have your yard and sometime house treated to get rid of the problem.

  12. I use frontline plus but we also spray our yard monthly. Here on a military post the yards are tight together and you never know if your neighbors are treating there dogs or not. The ticks here in KY are awful and these 2 things plus keeping my dogs on heartguard as well have kept mine healthy and bug free.

Until I moved out west I had never seen ticks.

One day I saw and felt one on my dog. I didn't know what to do. The other person, who owned a dog, would pull them out sometimes leaving the head in the dog.

I asked around and was told to grab the tick and twist it counter clockwise until it came out. I tried it and it worked well. No head left and no infection.

No meds just the twisting motion. Counter clockwise.

Removing them wasn't that much of a chore from then on.
