And this is why letting your dog "have at it" w/the unleashed dog will only hurt YOU!

This is the perfect example of why we encourage people to walk the other way when out with their leashed APBTs & an unleashed dog is spotted up ahead. It seems that in the following situation, the owner didn't have time to react, but notice whose dog was declared dangerous in the end: not the unleashed lab who started the whole fiasco.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD colSpan=2>THE owners of a dog branded "dangerous" have hit back claiming the attack it was blamed for was the fault of the other animal.

The Southport Visiter last week revealed six-year-old Labrador Sasha suffered a deep gash to her back after being mauled by a dog on Ainsdale sand dunes.

It's owner Margaret Murray, of Sandringham Road, warned other walk-ers to be on their guard following the attack.

But Gill and Paul Mullan of Brior Road, Ainsdale, have now come forward to say it was their dog China, a Great Dane and Bull Mastiff cross, who was involved in the incident and state it was not her fault.

Gill, 47, said: "I was walking with my mother and China along the sand dunes when this Labrador, who was not on a lead, came running over to China.

"The dog then began to circle China, which is often a sign that they want to fight. That made me nervous so I went to grab hold of her as the other dog's owner, who was with a group of people, were nowhere nearby.

"As I did that, the Labrador snapped at China. They began fighting and rolling around. I was trying to pull them apart.

The other group were at least 30 yards away and did not help."

Gill said she put China on a lead and went to leave, not realising the injuries sustained to the other dog.

She added: "The Labrador got up and ran off so I thought it was OK. I saw a bit of blood and slobber on the dog's back but they had been rolling round in brambles so I assumed it was just a nick.

"The woman demanded I pay the vet's bills but as far as I was concerned it was her dog who started it and she did not do anything to stop them so I refused because I was so angry at her."

As a gesture of goodwill, the Mullans have now offered to pay for half the vet's bills.

Gill added: "China is not a vicious dog and we are not irresponsible dog owners. We got China as a rescue dog and all potential owners are vetted by the RSPCA before the dog is handed over.

"China is known by all the children in the street and has never once been aggressive - she was just defending herself.

"I am furious to have been branded irresponsible as I don't consider the incident to have been China's fault and I was the only one who did anything to stop them."

Yep..we all know it's damn near illegal, if not immoral to actually have a "pit bull". Or so some would have you think.

This is a very illustrative point on why one should always try to circumvent a situation with another dog off lead. I've actually picked up a couple of my dogs to avoid something of this sort happening. Of course, if I felt it was a choice of me or another person getting bit and letting my dog handle things....."have some fun my friend". But only in such a situation would I allow it. (And that's a fairly rare scenario)

So her dog wasn't on a leash either?

We have gone through similar situations on post. Usually I grab up my dogs and walk them in the ther direction. I have had a few times when it was to late and the dogs were there before I could react. In this situation I usually get a tight hold on mine and yell at the other dogs. These off leash dogs cause more problems for us. I finally called JAG and the military police and asked them some questions. This is what they said:
    1) no matter the breed the off leash dog will be at fault
2)I can carry and use pepper spray or kick/hit the other dog if I need to
Of course I have a hard time believing they would not target my dog first. I can say a few ankle biters have flew off my shoe but hey the owners should have them on lead no matter the size. My chihuahua is not allowed off lead either.
I would hope these people fight this and I hope the irresponsible party pays. Uncontrolled dogs = disaster

Lockjaw, breaking sticks generally don't work to break up fights between non pit bull-breeds. Bulldogs grab and hold, while most other breeds tend to bite and snap repeatadly, making a break stick not an option.

This has happened to me before, and under Florida law, if your dog injurs/kills another domestic animal off the owners property, it is considered dangerous, even if the other dog attacked first. This is why I no longer walk my dog in certain sections of the neighborhood, I opt to walk him along the river instead.

This happened to me. My neighbor left his door open while i was walking past and his six year oldapbt tried to attack my 5 month old pup but i lifted it over my head. I still was jumping for my pup even after i kicked it in the neck. The owners daghter was scared to get the dog so i had to wait for 5min until some one came by to take the dog in the house.

Well, i believe that everyone should have a handle on their dog at all times. It is up to us as responsable owners to do so. ohav4, never kick, or act like you are going to be aggressive twards a dog because he is lunging at your pet. You are putting your self in danger when you do this. This is just some advice, im not trying to tell you what to do. you have a good chance of turning that dog on you as it will see that you are aggressive twards it. This can result in two problems, one the dog is already an APBT and now you have in some way shape or form, unintentionally made it human aggressive, and two, it might decide to attack you and now you are in the hospital. Bad for the breed and bad for yourself.....just pic up the pup and call for the dogs owner. try to get home asap. Just my opinon.....and im trying to help.;)

    Sir or mam,

My advice to call the police everytime a dog is seen running loose in your neighborhood (if it is seen repeadingly). They have to do something about it.The people will get a ticket for it and may think twice about letting their dog run loose. If the tickets don't work the dog could be pulled from the owners.Which in my opinion is the best thing if that's the case. This would be best for many reasons such as the dog could get hit by a car.Play with a child and unintentionally hurt the child and so on.

People, if two individuals are walking their dogs one off leash (non bully type dog) and the other on (bully type) and these dogs get into a "fight", the culprit will be the one off leash. Don't ask to pay for the bill, don't ask forgiveness, don't promise to muzzle your dog. It is a general law that all dogs MUST be on a leash or confined whenever outside. If you get into this type of accident, call the police and tell them a dog off leash came towards "us" and my boy/girl went into protective instincts. Stick to your guns, do not get persuaded by bias police and other "party". Stick to your guns.

Not on military post. They would instantly take away your dog.

There are several stray dogs in our area and plenty of people that love to walk. We always have our dogs on a leash as a courtesy to them and protection for our bullies and will even carry a large stick or an object that will help protect us if need be. There is much more out there where we live than just dogs....bears, snakes, etc.

Re: And this is why letting your dog "have at it" w/the unleashed dog will only hurt YOU!

Dont ever admit guilt to anything.. Simply state the facts. Off leash dog ran up to my dog, I yelled for owner but no owner in site, I grabbed the collar of my dog, tried to walk in the opposite direction but the other dog attacked. Personally I wouldnt even mention "protective mode" or anything to that effect. My dog was attacked, I had my hands on my dog. Thats it. Dont say anything more than you have to. plain and simple, to the point. This person had witnesses, the other person didnt.. unless there is more to the story than meets the eye

the simple fact (as this side of the story says) is the labs owner was no where to be found, meaning they did not have control of thier dog. If theres no leash laws, then there's nothing one can do about the dog being off leash. But the owner of the lab failed to control their dog while the mastiff /boxer mix's owner was able to place her hands on the collar of the dog (and should have walked in the opposite direction instead of standing there waiting for something to happen). Many areas have a rule that if you didnt know your dog was "vicious" you get a warning and must take proper action.

  16. Re: And this is why letting your dog "have at it" w/the unleashed dog will only hurt YOU!

the common idiot has no idea what a breaking stick is, let alone what one looks like. but i'd rather take the chance of the mp/sp's tryin to give me shit for taking a preventative/protective measure against an accident than to be empty handed.

i've said it about the gun i carry every where i go - "id rather be caught with it, than caught without it!"

even on a military installation, possessing a breaking stick would not be grounds for removal of your dog. they might revoke your "priveledge" as the military deems it to have a pet in base-housing, therefore leaving you assed out to find a home off-post, but even that is an extreme thought. you really gotta screw up most times, to lose base housing.

Reread the story, if she pur her dog on lead and walked away then she wasn't on lead.

  18. Re: And this is why letting your dog "have at it" w/the unleashed dog will only hurt YOU!

Most important thing...don,t lose your nerves...don,t hit the other dog. As long as posible hold your dog away from the other dog...if the other dog is as big or bigger then your dog and ataks your dog frontal(direct) let your dog go. If the other owner screams at you be gentle...talk slow and direct to the owner...please him to help you stop the fight. The problem is the non bulldog in this situations because H E will bite Y O U....happens to me 3 times.Say to him that he should hold the head of his dog to give you the chance to take your dog away. Then he is the one who left a finger:) but serious ...this situations are the ones you should avoid..the leash should be your(and your dogs) best friend. If a little dog ataks your dog direct(its not impossible lol) try to put your feed underneath him and kick him S O F T away...hold the head of your dog away from the other dog...My dog is V E R Y aggressive and I know what can happen.....strong nerves are the most important thing
