so I'm still undecided about getting penelopes ears cropped but in leaning towards getting them done. so anyways I went to the veet today, my friend BJ recomended him. he does his dogs ears and they look nice.

anyways we were talking and I showed him some pics of how I would want them done (show cut not fight cut) and he said that he could do it the way I want.

when I asked him about the healing time and about tapping her ears and everything he said that pits ears don't have to be tapped after their cropped. he said that they will tape them if they have to but he dosent think my dog will need then cause of her lift.

anyways I always taught that pits ears need to get tapped and rolled and what not. am I mistaken or does it go by case by case?

i think it really depends on the cut. we used to have a pincher and had problems with his because he would pull off the tape with his paws and stick his head in his water bucket. and in the end one always flopped over. but i agree with your vet i havent seen many pits taped up. just my input

personally i dont mind the cropped ears but both of my dogs still have theirs. one major drawback is cleanleness of the ears. Correct me if i am wrong but i think they are more prone to ear infection with cropped ears, due to the ears not flapping over and stopping durt from getting in.

The healing process is nasty! Dixies stood on her own, and didnt need taped. If they are done too short, they sometimes lay flat, not right. I had her medium, show style. They are gorgeous. I get so many comments on her ears. It seems to be the first noticable thing on her, next her markings. I have a pic in my gallery, you can see them.

Do whatever you like, I think they look awesome, and if she/he is not an outside dog with the chance of rain running into his brain(lol) with cropped ears or alot of dirt getting in there, there shouldn't be a problem. They take a while to heal, and an Elizabethen collar is most likely needed, and they LOOK painful, but when it looks grand, they make ya proud!

Listen to those for it, and against it and make a decision on your own. G'luck:)

    What is a fight cut????

I know that people who show their dogs crop their dogs ears, (unnecessary surgery/anaesthetic in my opinion) but I've never seen a fight cut. Didn't even know there was one.

Drycreek- people who dont know better assume a short cut is a "fight cut". There logic is "If the dog doesnt have an ear, the other dog cant bite there!" When in reality, 90% of all good dogs have natural ears. Cropping an ear goes against logic for sporting aspects, folks. Anyone who has a brain would much rather have an ear shredded in a kennel accident than a crushed nose, punctured throat,or broken legs!

    Exactly!!

plus, i just love all of my dogs natural ears. some flop, some are rose ears, some stick partly up. Gives them character.

My two males have their ears cropped. My female does not. My one male had his done before I got him and the other one I had done by the same vet. I wouldnt do it. It just seemed to cause him a lot of pain, and you have to be so careful after its done to give them time to heal. I wish I never would have done it. On the other hand they are easier to keep clean. Dirt seems to get stuck more in my females ears and she has been more prone to infection. Its really a preference thing. I would ask to see some pics of past croppings from your vet before getting them done though.

When the proper crop is done on an APBT, there is no need for taping. Your vet is right. IF the ears have to be propped, taped, etc., then the dog & it's ears were no candidate for a crop (i.e. they fold inwards over the head)

I have never had to tape any of my dogs ears they all stood just fine. Our vet takes the stitches out after 10 days and the ears are healed. None of my dogs acted like they hurt they were just as crazy and puppyish as they were before.

This is an interesting thread. Both of the dogs I got cropped were taped afterwards, at least for a while. Also, on other boards, they usually talk about taping and massaging the ears after the procedure. I'm not going to push anyone either way, but I feel like if taping helps the ear to stand correctly, I'll do it. If you're going to crop, you really only get one chance to get it right. (And I've seen some ugly crops.)

Here's my 2 cents worth. Until i got my dog trubs, all of the dogs that came to our house had natural ears. Their ears gave most of them character... but there were some that had big floppy ears that looked weird. So whether or not you decide to crop is up to you. I love my dog to death, and i think he looks good w/ his croped ears. I would love him still the same even if he had big floppy ears. I have heard different things about taping ears. I'm not sure where i stand on that. When i received my pup, he had just had his hears done that day. The vet that did it said the ears wouldn't stand up straight so he taped the tips of his ear points together. We were to keep the ears that way untill he took the stiches out. His crop was done beautifully.... but that's not to say that it wouldn't have looked just as nice if they weren't taped together....[IMG]
Her Ears give her character i think.../\

    Same with this pup.... /\

but i'm sure they both would look just fine w/ cropped ears.

    Here's my dog w/ cropped ears... /\

    that's my 2 cents...

Actually old timers called it Battle cut.

On the contrary my friend I know of a famous old timer that use to routinely do it for a reason in the sporting aspect. Im not saying I agree with it but it has been done by some old time dogmen for a reason just to get the facts straight.

I think her ears are perfect. If China's ears had looked like that, she would still have 'em!
