question about socialization

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by carsonbabe310, Mar 14, 2006.

  1. I am concerned about providing enough socialization. Most American Pit Bull Terriers are friendly, but some have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to friendly people so they learn to recognize the normal behaviors of "good guys." Then they can recognize the difference when someone acts abnormally. Without careful socialization, they could become suspicious of everyone, which could lead to aggression toward people.

I read this in the FAQ: my question is, how do you get to socialize your dog if he is already "suspicios" of some people (mostly men, women are okay) and people in todays society are afriad of pits?

IMHO, a truly sound pit bull will not be suspicious of anyone. I can't count how many rescued dogs I've met, and not a single one of them met me with anything other than tons of wiggles and kisses.

Sounds like your dog is a bit unsure of strangers, and its common (don't know why?) for dogs to be more wary of men than women. My suggestion is to look around for bulldog clubs in your area (or members on this or other forums) to socialize your buddy with. Have them meet him with treats, and praise him when he behaves appropriately.

I don't really know what else to suggest, having never met or dealt with a pit bull who was unsure of people.

  3. dont let him play with other people, becuse then it can go the other way. that he want to say helo to every one he meets. Walk around in the city sometimes. that makes him calm around people and just ignore them and that is the best way to have a dog, that just ignore everything that is not straight to him.

Listen. APBTs are not naturally human aggressive. If he is showing a sign of protection when people come around, than that is ok. If he is aggressive twards people than i would have to put the cold steel in his mouth and say goodnight. That is how I deal with human aggressive dogs. Just me. It is in a dogs natural instinct to protect its pack or family. Read some books on the APBT if you already havent and educate your self on human aggression. Richard Strauton is a great way to start along with others. A protective dog is a good dog. If you would like to asociate him with people than that is the best way. Just never leave him unsupervised.
