Hey every one i just watch a program on animal plant. Animal cops detroit, the show had these young kids that had a great looking pit puppy that these boys had took a rubber band around each one of the puppies ears and cut them off with scissors. As some as i seen this it upset me to see it the boys were useing the puppy for fighting and cut the ears off for this perpuse when will people realize that these doggs are not for fighting. i have a 10 mounth pit pup and she is so sweet i could not see these doggs fighting. they have to much love in there hearts i hope people would wake up and see how loveing these doggs are the puppy in the show had to be put down for this and it was not it falt. well i just wanted to voice how i felt about this behavor.

I live in michigan I dont know how it is in other parts of the country but around here in the "Hood" you can find many of dog mutilaters willing to botch a crop job for around 25 to 50 bucks. Now that I think about it I know a redneck that does it also,this asshole worked at a petco and would lay his sales pitch to anyone who came in with a pitbull puppy. I met one guy that does all his own dogs ears. the crop's looked prfesional but that makes it no better,these people are scum. How about next time a profesional docter or dentist has to take a knife to him with no anastisia or pain reliver.

 

While I know how it feels,

1. These dogs were built for fighting. Look at their history.

2. The $PCA is run by idiots. The pup was euthanized not because it was in pain from the crop, but because it had been involved in "dog fighting". Yes, because everyone knows that a little pup can be a master in the pit.

3. There are many, many moronic people outthere who have no business owning dogs, let alone having kids. Parents need to learn to crackdown harder.

 

No these dog were built and breed to fight period. Im am sure at some point thaywere used for some sort of bullbaiting but the pitbull was breed to fight. Nowdays the pitbull is the ultamite woorking dog and will sucseed at many diffrent activitys

 

these dogs were bred to bear bait then bull bait and matter of fact ratting. ratting was where they put the dogs into a pit with several rats and it was a timed event to see how many rats they could kill in a period of time. then after they outlawed all these events they went to fighting them and they also have banned that as well. so people tried the hog catchin that to now has been banned in several states.

 

That animal cops detroit is a joke!! I have seen countless Pits put down on that show! There was a Pit that was fought and had scars, but he looked like a very kind dog,no barking, no biting or nipping, just a great lookin' dog but they put him down. Also there was a time where they found 40+ Pits and I think only a couple where not put down. The worst people for the job!!

 

You'll hear/read many different "theories" regarding this breed. Suffice it to say dog fighting to day is a felony, regardless of what ever "past" it is that you happen to read...

I live near detroit also, and in michigan any pit bull surrendered to the michigan humane socitey is put down, i personally think this is wrong. I also did see the animal cops detroit where the pit had its ears cropped, and if children could do that to a dog at that age, what happens when they grow up to be adults? They probally will still be hurtng animals and even worse people. I think if kids commit crimes like this they deserve to be tried as adults, and i thought it was very good they arrested the step father who was home at the time of the incident also! You need to watch your kids!

 

I have seen this first hand and it is not a pretty site. I used to work for the local shelter where I used to live and you would not believe what I used to see done to pitbulls. Nowadays, it is all too common. A teenager took a 4 month old pit puppy, cut his ears and then tried to burn them shut to stop the bleeding. It was the most horrifying thing I had ever seen in my life. I can't tell you how many pits I took home for rehabilitation. We even had one where the owner swung the dog against a tree breaking its two front legs all because the dog wouldn't fight. I also agree that parents need to be held accountable for their kids action. Obviously thew need the boys had a pitbull and should have been aware of the breed and the responsibilities that come along with owning one. So, the stepfather was at fault too.

 

It is my understanding that the Detroit Animal Control kills all the APBT's it can get it's hands on, regardless of whether or not there is evidence that the dogs have been used for fighting.

 

I can't even watch that show anymore. It pisses me off something serious. Almost EVERy pit bull or pit bull type dog that is on that show is put down b/c "it's dangerous". Which is complete BULLSHIT. Some of them are dangerous and do need to be put down. They don't even give those dogs a chance.

What I think they should do with most of them:

Inform any potential adopters that the dog was fought before, inform them of all of the possible things that COULD go wrong. Strictly moniter who adopts them. Check up on the dog and the owner for at least the following year or so. I am sure that many of those pit bulls could find good homes and never have any problems, or have only small problems, like animal aggression, which can be "controled" by the owner. The problem is they don't even get a CHANCE. I say at least give them a week or two (and that's still unfair) to be adopted, then consider putting them down, (b/c we all know that that is almost always the first thing they think of doing with a pit bull in a shelter.

I'm not talking about adopting out the human aggressive ones. I am talking about the ones who may have been a little aggressive at first, probably because of fear and confusion, but after a day, calm down and are sweethearts once they relize that they aren't in danger anymore. Understand?

 

I'm sorry, I meant to by-pass the controversy in this thread, but I couldnt help but respond to this. I am sick and tired of hearing this propaganda BS spewed forth as reasoning to destroy our breed. Back in the day, rolling dogs was simply-rolling dogs. Back in the day-fighting cocks was fighting cocks. Thats it. Same today as basketball is basketball. If this logic was correct then were are the millions of legal cock-fighting murderers walking the streets in LA, New Mexico, and Oklahoma? Where are the millions of those who continue on a family tradition in the dogs and test their stock? By your theory all that grow up on a Cattle Farm will grow up hurting people-due to castrating bulls. We all know this isnt the case, and I'm sick and tired of hearing this BS daily with absolutely no facts what-so-ever to back it up.

Ask yourself "Where are all the murdering farmers, slaughterhouse workers, and even fisherman if this is true!". Yes, thats right-even fisherman. PETA would lead you to believe fish have feelings, are capable of intelligent thought process and it is cruel to catch them. So every kid that threw a line in the water as a kid will also grow up to hurt people? Absolutely not.

People need to think a little more before they start spewing out the crap that the media has instilled in their minds.

I have come to the realization that simms has the best idea when it comes to these animals that are in the shelters. Put them all down.

My reasoning is this, if average people adopt a pit bull that was raised as a fighting dog and they will have NO IDEA what they are getting into, that dog is better off dead than becoming another statistic for the media to throw in our faces. It's the same as people thinking it's cruel to keep your dog on a chain, they are the ones who's dogs are getting loose and creating havok around their neighborhood, not the chained dogs. All bad press, all their fault, and the dog would end up being euthanized later anyways.

Yes these dogs are wonderful, and yes they can make great family pets, BUT, MOST people are not responsible enough or aware of the potential they have in their pet.

Time to close the circle. These dogs are not for everybody. These animals were doing just fine before, they were not in the paper doing attacks,they were not the media's number one story. Then joe blow got their hands on them and hell on earth was created for the breed.

If anyone ruined this breed, it's the people who own them as pets or social badges, not the honest working kennels.

 

I believe animal cruelty laws should have stiffer penalties and that youth who torture animals are on a road to becoming potentially evil adults. There is actual evidence that supports this and the more you get away with the more you tend to push it.

Dog fighting is contradictory to what the Government states is already legal. What I mean is that by law animals are posessions. Animals are viewed as here for the use of human beings, meat, eggs, fur, research, entertainment (circuses are no picnic) are all legal. In a research facility where it is most unfortunate to be an animal, there are no restrictions what-so-ever. A researcher can do anything they want to an animal for the sake of research. Even pain experiments, which are more common than you would like to know. Experiments that have been repeated over and over, experiments which you or I would probably be able to guess the results with accuracy, all because the law says animals are posessions and are for our use. So, I find it very odd that although this is the case, dog fighting is illegal. It doesn't matter if I think it is cruel or not, it doesn't matter if I think burning an animal alive is cruel or not for the sake of research, or electricuting a furry little animal for the sake of a fashionalbe coat. I think that the thought of blood, or maybe the thought of owning an animal viewed as a pet that is a serious worker irks the authorities. I really don't know what the issues are, because I find so many other perfectly legal inflictions on animals so very horrific. Doesn't make sense to me.

 

True, the average responsible couple or family walking into a shelter looking to adopt a dog would not be in a good position to own one of these dogs, it would be disasterous.

 

These dogs are used for many things now-a-days. It's hard to hear or see, some of what is said, on TV. Same thing should be done to the idiot for doing wrong, teach them a lifes lesson.
