I did not know that is how the law reads Riptora...I will be the first to admit I'm not a Harvard scholar, or a lawyer and although I have a basic understanding of laws and enforcement of them, that part must of flew past me. It was my understanding that you could do what you wished with livestock as long as it did not interfer with the set standards of decency we have. As far as most statues go, canines are not considered livestock and have their own set of rules as to what constitutes cruelty. Do I think animal cruelty is o'k and should be legal. Hell no! But as for what constitues cruelty, thats another story. Dog-fighting and beating an animal senseless with a 2x4 are completely diffrent scenarios, and should not be treated the same IMO.

Contrary to what most people would have you believe, most dog-fighters (historically and today) do not particularly enjoy the sport, or the damage that follows. It was a necessary step in testing these dogs, and for the majority of fanciers was something not to be enjoyed. I will not sit here and lie to you. There will always be the folks who get a hard-on(excuse the language please) from watching carnage and animals getting wounded. It's the same as Nascar in a way. Let me elaborate-to the serious fans, it is a test of a drivers perserverance, endurance, stamina, and willingness to continue hour after hour to win in the face of competition. Serious fans, enjoy the racing for what it is, and what it represents. Of course however, there will always be the hooligans who just want to see a fatal or even simply traumatic wreck. It is the same in the dogs. It is not a matter of excitement through destruction for the true fanciers, it is a matter of inspiration through tremendous heart and an undying love to do what they want to do. It is inspiring to see a young gun with nothing but a will, teach himself the ropes, give it his all every time and succeed. There will be setbacks, and its not a glamorous story if you take it at face value and only as a sick form of entertainment.

How does this tie into the original thread?

Some things will never be accepted by everyone-and you make people enjoy something anymore than you can make something stop doing what it loves. If you do not like dog-fighting, greyhound racing, thoroughbred racing, hunting with dogs or whatever your individual problem may be....simply dont get involved in it. We went wrong when everybody who wanted to put a couple bucks in a politicians back pocket to support their agenda started passing laws. I really do not like thoroughbred racing myself-but I still admire the athletes for what they are, and am not fighting in Congress to outlaw it! I dont like the idea of pre-bought, swipe your Visa card for a deer, hunting trips-but I am not causing a fuss about that. My point being, everyone likes diffrent things...what one person sees in a given activity is not what you are expected to see. The great thing about this Country was we were founded on Freedom and letting people do what they wish as long as it did not interfer with another human-beings safety. I do not wish to debate too much if we still have these freedoms, so I will simply ask if that is the way things are still today, or did we get off track? Can anybody with enough supporters and enough $$ change laws and get personal-feeling issue laws passed in this country? YES! Does a large enough bank account mean you are entitled to forcing your opinions on others? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Dog-fighting and actual animal cruelty are two entirely diffrent things. I do not doubt there may be some correlation between a kid who beats stray mutts to death with a metal spike, and that kid later growing up to be abusive and/or dangerous in other ways. Simply because some people changed the general publics view on what is now animal cruelty, does not mean a dog-fighter,cock-fighter, fisherman or hunter are going to grow up to be women-beating serial killers! Leave that title to the ones who really deserve it-the ones who get pleasure from watching something suffer and die. I will tell you right now, just because it is accepted in our time that certain sports are "cruelty"....does not mean there is any enjoyment in it (for anyone but the two finding out something about themselves-finding out how much they can take, how much heart they have, and what their true convictions are!).

  2. I wasnt saying the dogs would hurt people, if you have taken any psyhcology classes, like i have, then they would have taught you animal cruelty is a steping stone for other "misbehaviors" as the kids grow up. Fishing and working on a cattle farm castrating cows, is completly different than torturing animals for the fun of it. Fishing is a way to get food, and has been for along time, is cutting dogs ears off with sissors cause you want their ears cropped a nessicity? Nope

  5. Dry your right taking a fighting pit bull ino you home as a recue nomal becomes the rescuer dose not know what they are sstepping into . My only problem was with the chain bit. My dog all have kennels but, they are also inside dogs that go out for maybe 3 to 4 hours in their kennel a day and have not nor will get lose. I will not put my dog on just a chain because of many reason but, if you look through case in Madison county North Carolina a man had his APBT brood female out on her chain with her litter in her dog house and a nighboro child who's mother was not watching him and should have been strayed in to the yard with the pit bulls to play with they puppies and was attacked If the man had her in a kennel with a lock on the door this could have not happed. I do strongly believe the mother of the child is more at fault for not watching her child. But, a fanced in yard or a kennel could have help stop something like this before it started. This breed can be come terriortal There are leash laws in place and it people who should not own dogs that break this law and help put the bad rep on dogs and owning a pit bull as a pet does not ruin the breed what do those honest working kennels do with pet quility puppies? Sell them as show, hunting or breeding dogs? No they sell them as pets with a spaying contract. Also in my town pit bulls and chow chows are put down as soon as they are brought in because they are "Dangerous Dogs" but, the local Animal Shelter will als killa dog if it over 1 yar old they ae "not adoptable" then. This is bull but, this is they way my county does it. As for chains being the safest you tell that to my nighboro aussie sheperd who has broke 2 pit bull chain in thiss past week.

Is it wrong for boxers to box? Is it wrong for K-1 fighters to fight? Is it wrong for sumo wrestlers to sumo? It is actually what they were breed for. The APBT was breed for the same. To fight. It is only wrong to those who know nothing about it. You would find that APBTs fight willingly and happily. They like it just as other fighters like it. I love boxing. I love Muai Tai. Its not wrong, its just overdone with these Back Yard Boogiers and idiot wanna be thugs who want a dog to be a killer. That is were it was wrong. If the government could tax it and keep it at bay, it would probably be leagal. that is the god honest truth. I live in japan were its different. Its not wrong here. Its just like a boxing match heresay. Sorry about the dogfighting talk. Just trying to clear some things up.

Socolds baby-what exactly is a "pitbull chain" ?

Pitbull Fauna-my point was, to some fishing and hunting are animal cruelty so should they be grouped in with burning a dog alive simply because some people find fishing cruel? Just because a few people believe anything involving an animal is cruelty, doesnt make it so. So please dont group dog-fighters with animal abusers, and sickos who torture and kill animals.

  9. How come on animal planet, every time there is a pit, there is fighting or abuse involved? Why can't they at least show something about APBT's in a POSITIVE light? After all it is animal planet...they are always showing something negative. So all the people out there with the stereotype on them watching animal planet can be assured that is how they are. BULLSHIT!!!!

14 Rock, you can only teach those that wan't to learn, but keep trying and maybe you will make some people here understand what a true bulldog is.

I had to comment on this one:
good points, as "sarcastic" as it is. :) You hit it pretty good on some things here:
yes, look at the breeds' history. Yes I too, think the ASPCA has MUCH to learn about the placement of pit bulls, rather than assuming that all are "beyond" help, and giving up, I wish they had more time and resources to better house/place them, escecially the ones that are truly adoptable.
Also, being a psychology minor, (Law Enforcement major), I can also see the reasoning behind the post that stated how the cruel treatment of animals by children can sometimes be an indicator of "problems" later on in that person's life. (anything's possible, as the human brain is so complex)
All points here have some validity. In summary, Animal Cops is a show, and any show needs ratings to keep it afloat. Yes, sadly, most of the pit bull depictions are in a negative way, and that hurts us all as owners. Also, yes, children "learn what they live". They will mimmick and idiolize something they see as "cool". Even if that means hurting an innocent animal in the process. The best we can do as by standers, is to write to the show, if you feel the need, be postitive role models for children, and ALWAYS represent this breed in a positive fashion. And if someone totally upsets you with their ingorance regarding this breed, don't stoop lower than them. Be cool, reply nicely and TRY to open their closed mind. Education is ALWAYS key! And sometimes, it's not what you say, but HOW you say it.:)

and do I think this breed is for EVERY one? No, not at all. It would be nice if breeders were far more selective with potential buyes, as would shelters be, as well.
It all boils down to responsibility.

    1. Rescues know this, one more reason not to adopt them out for liability reasons.

    2. Again, liability reasons. It is not feesable to adopt out a dog with that kind of history because "just in case" the dog ended up injuring another animal or a person, they are screwed. Besides, with SO MANY other dogs in need of homes, lets not discriminate by breed by favoring the pits either and cutting them extra slack. This is why we need MORE apbt breed specific rescues.

    3. It bothers me that so many of you are against BSL not only because we want to own our favorite breeds but because it goes against our personal rights as citizens, but yet you feel the need to decide who should have kids. You also feel that even though we should be able to own any breed we want we should monitor who owns ANY animals? I am all about rights for children and animals, I have my own and I offer them everything they need, but this bugs me. You talk about freedom and rights and then talk about taking some away.

what kind of crap is that drycreek! I am a pet owner not a breeder and I in no way have ruined this breed. You generalized all pet owners into 1 group. that is straight-up b.s.

I understand what you are saying Riptora...and it is a point well taken. I dont think anyone really believes they could be the judge as to who can have kids...and who cant. Quite frankly, no one is capable of such position....except for God, if you believe in one. When I read statements such as that, I see it more as a gauge of frustration and speaking out in anger, something that they really dont mean. Sometimes you cant take things exactly as they are written, and need to try and look past it. Ya know?

Sorry to side-step the thread (yet again)..but it plays in, in a way.

Maybe the boys that did that to the dog, and hell the father to for that matter, should be sentenced to work in the humane shelter. If it reached even one kid, well who knows.
