Why don't you just buy a hammer handle from like Ace hardware or similar and sand it down with a sander? I bought a break stick for like 15 bucks from a pit rescue group in California. Since you are a man I assume you own a sander? If not forget it cause a sander will cost more than a break stick. You can drill a hole near the top and insert a cord also.
Don't forget that in some states owning a break stick is evidence of "dog fighting."
Also I had pit bulls for years without ever owning a break stick and I broke up a couple of fights without one...it was pretty scary...which is why I bought one and carry it with me whenever I have my dog as I have read sad stories about dogs killing each other...
Umm, apparently the rescue group I purchased my break stick from does not sell break sticks mail order.
If I weren't so lazy I would have made one...

Hi, thanks for the input, I would be the 1st one to admit, although I am a man, I suck at that type of stuff, so I did the next best thing and purchased 2 sticks for $23.50 at http://www.pbrc.net/shop/bsticks.html, If you add the time, price for all the material I would need, pluse I suck at doing that stuff, I came out saving money and trouble lol.

Hopefully you will never need either break stick, so you don't need to worry about them splintering. Thanks for deciding to support dog rescue and for being responsible enough to be prepared...

Im pretty new to all this supplies that u may need to own a pitbull??thanks

thats exactly right taz, if your dog has a grip on another, you put it between his back teeth, and turn it like a screwdriver. just be careful, in some states it could be considered dog fighting paraphonalia (don't know if i spelled that right) and you could get in trouble for having it on you.

If you own more than one APBT, how can you consider yourself responsible without one.
Accidents happen, and if you are prepared then thats part of being responsible.

Also hog hunters, coyote hunters and fox hunters use break sticks.
Hell I use break stick to make my dogs quit working hide on spring-pole or flirt-pole.

Well even if your a responsible owner u never know some dogs can get out of yards by accident and they can come and fight ur dog...IMO

Out frickin standing Stillwater. Rep points for that one. Resposable owners can also not help if some idiot does not leash their dog when walking and it attacks and then yours grips. If you carry a breaking stick with you when you walk, it might just save ya.

  14. in sedalia we ran acrost 10 unleashed loose dogs running around. My dog olmost got into a fight between several ones. Its stupid reasons like that why you need a break stick. You know in my town if it was a pit bull loose like that. The dog would probally be shot.

Good answer. Personally I would save my dog the trouble in this case senerio. If a dog ran up wanting to fight I would probably knowing me give one warning shot for the owner. My dog's will stay on command so I can tend to the other dog and it's owner if need be. I didn't retire from the Army to put up with that sort of behaviour now. I was perplexed in this thread of discussion though as we are trying to inhance our breed and make a positive public display of our dogs. Ones allowed to show this behavior are a problem for our fight. As I commented on the making of a break stick you will likely if caught go to jail and your dogs euthanized even if you don't fight your dogs. No different than a crack head with a crack pipe. You don't have them if there isn't a problem.

In cases of dogs running loose such as stated I don't have to worry about my dogs. They will stay in sit attension position till I tell them otherwise. I do carry a side arm for reasons not related to my dogs. I use it if need be. However with leash laws as such as most cities have now days it should not be an issue. I do know that it is though. I live in the country and have problems with strays sometimes. No longer do I have any troubles out of my neighbors or there pets. They complained that I raised Pit Bulls. I brought forth the law that states that any raiser of livestock, poultry or other animal for purpose of sale, breeding and food shall have the right to kill any predator that enters said persons farm and personal property. To include cattle rustlers, horse theives or any other thief of livestock, poultry and animal of said farm. To include poachers. In essence with the witness of the Sheriff and two deputies It was set clear that not only did I have the right but I would use it if need be. End of issues. One time in life that the law can work in someones favor if you dig far enough to find it. As it has not been done in many years the penalty for thieving animals is still death by hanging. No one bothers to change it because of wide spred thought it doesn't exist any longer in this state. Be bad luck some old timer caught some one nabbing one of his cows. I think it should be that way. If I can't ever let my dogs run out of my yard it should be so for every other breed of dog. I should not have to defend my dog from another. I will but I shouldn't have too. I am sure if let be one of my dogs would fight. But I don't let it be. I would rather shot the other dog first and save my dog and me the problems of letting it fight. I can handle a law suit for shooting something it would break my heart to loose one or all of my dogs for some other persons neglect. Lord help him then. I pray I never have to deal with such. In public my dogs are on a leash. I do have my cane and it is made out of hickory. I am not going to stick it in my dogs mouth but I will use it to ward off trouble or my side arm depending on which side of the bed I woke up on that day. It all works out. I am not going to stand there helpless and wait for a fight to start. I have taken a few bullets and knives in my days too. I am sure being a civilian now could be just as fun. You all can do as you do and so will I. But these are the reasons to press equil laws for all dogs not just one breed or type of breed. The dogs I have trained to guard my sheep Pit Bulls and Shar-Pei I might add do their job and do it well. These dogs are highly intelligent and can do more that bate and tackle game and fight. A Black and tan coon hound can do that as well as a Plot Hound. I have raised both of those to know that. However they were not good for much else. I hunt with one of my Pits. There are so many things that these dogs can do. If you train them. Hell I was trained to Kill in the Special Forces and did my job as trained for 21 years. I do have other skills thank God. Maybe I am worse than any ones dog. But I can pay a fine or argue my case. They just kill our dogs no questions asked. No matter if it is defending itself or not. If your dog locks on you already lost the battle. I understand a woman not stepping in front of her dog in this case but as a man I don't have respect for a man hiding behind his dog with a stick hoping there isn't any trouble. I will tell you this if your dog fights you will likely loose the case in court if it ever gets there before they kill your presious pet with an injection of poison that attacks their nervious system and the heart and lungs stop working and it basicly suffocates to death.

Its very good that you want a breaking stick. I love my dogs and I'm very responsible, but its very good to have one already...I bought one and I've never had to use it, but my room mate did on her dog cuz another dog attacked it. It was a stray...You never know when you'll need it!!

Alright, first of all, your remarks are naive, at best. Your dogs are bred to fight.
Like it or not, hundreds of years of gameness are in your dogs blood. You can bet your ass he will fight if given the chance, much less if he's challenged! Secondly, not everyone lives in the country, most cities frown on people firing shots into the air, because they don't want to break up a dog fight. I think the police in my area are a bit more concerned with people toting guns then break sticks. If you can blindly think you can break up a dog fight without a break stick, god bless ya then, but don't advise others to make this irresponsible mistake.
