Prong Collars

Just wanted to get some other pit bull owners opinions on prong collars. As some lady told me it was cruel to have one on my pit bull. I tried explaining to her that, if used properly (which I do), they do not hurt the dog at all, but she wouldn't hear it.

Do any of you use prong collars for walks? Have you had people approach you like this before? Do you find prong collars to be effective?

We used one as a training/correction tool and had good success with it. We were lucky enough to acquire a dog trainer who supported the use of prong collars and taught us how to correctly use it. I myself do not find it cruel. You can't hurt these dogs! When we were using it, they'd go nuts at the site of it knowing that they were about to go on a walk.

We quit using it on walks due to the fact that the dogs learned not to pull on a prong collar, OR a nylon. A lot of training, but it seems to have worked.

Yea, I tried using it as only a training tool, but Lexas won't have it. She pulls if I don't have the prong collar on her. She gets excited too when I pick up her prong collar. She walks great with the prong collar though.

That lady is an idiot. They do look like some sort of torture devices, but they are not painful and probably more comfortable than a choke chain (because preasure is applied evenly instead of on the side) they are also much safer than the choke chains, which are easy to missuse. Prong collars are EXTREMELY effective and there are MANY dogs whom I've come to know who need them to behave in public. They are for training of course, so you don't leave them on in the home or in the yard.

They are most definately NOT painful, I know it sounds freaky but I actually tried one on once to see what it was like and it did not hurt me let alone a pit bull or any breed with FAR more muscle mass in the neck than myself. I could see many dogs that should not have a prong collar, but many do. The only quarel is to get the right fitting, and determine if your dog would benefit from one. These are totally humane "training aids"

  5. i have used em a few years ago and to me it didnt seem cruel i actualy found the dogs seemed to get the drift that they are not to pull our arms out of socket when we go for walks, even though most of em do lol.but i was aproached one time at the vet when i took a female in to get her tit unblocked from a litter she just had and this woman also had a pit but she had it on a choke chain and she was concerned about my dog to put it lightly.so she continues about how i should get rid of this thing and get a choke chain for my dog.so i asked her i said ma'am what do you think is better a dog being choked by a collar or i said having a little pinch applied evenly throughout the entire neck on the thickest part of the skin on the neck? i said i have seen many bulldogs actually injure themselfs on choke chains because they pull so hard.so she asked the vet and he said yes this man is right on the money about the collars he said i would recomend a prong collars anyday over chok chains he said you dont know how many dogs espically bulldog breeds that i have seen and treated in here who have injured their necks on these collars,he said as long as they are only used for walking and they are removed when you can not supervise them the dog will be fine and dandy.so she actually said she was sorry for making such a big fuss and asked me where she could get one of these collars.but i think if used properly prong collars are more effective than any other form of correction for a dog, espically when you compare it to choking or sending electricity to the neck.

I completely agree with all of you. Oh and just so you all know. I never leave the collar on her unless we're walking. IDK if you all thought differently. She wears it whenever we go somewhere. If I have to tie her up, I clip the leash to her leather collar and take off the prong, or if she's going to play i take the prong off.

letting your dog pull you on walks is great exercise, but i understand not everyone likes this. THe prong collars are great for this (everyone should throw away their choke chains!). I actually take a few of my dogs running with me, and when i run i dont want to be dragged, so they wear the prong, then on the way home, i switch to a reg. collar, and they tug me home... great exercise for both :)

  11. thats true and i really didnt mind it until i hit my 60's then i started feeling all the years of having them pull me around,so i had to do something and the prong collar really worked.but like you said throw out the choke chains they are no good for the dogs.

I don't have a need to use them with my dog and I am glad that she doesn't need one. I find that people tend to be more afraid of a dog that has a scarey looking collar and that only fuels the fear and hatred of pit bulls that is running rampant through the nation.

  13. thats also true but most and i use that term loosely most people know what a prong collar is and if they dont we just have to treat it like everything else and try to explain to them all about it and hope they walk away with a diffrent view.there really isnt anything else you can do if you have to have a prong collar.[IMG]

  14. We tried using one with fauna, my older female, but she still pulled, we bought her a special harness that pulls on her front legs, kinda hard to explain, and that isnt really working either, since she rears up and uses her back legs to pull you along. We started putting the prong on my 11 month old female, and its working great. I guess we just should have started using it earlier on the mom dog, but shes really stubborn so i doubt anything will work, spoiled brat :).

prong collars are actually alot less painful on the dog then a regular choker chain.
and won't cause throat problems like chokers will.

So does everone here recommend prong over choke collars?I use a choke collar and it's ok but my dog still tends to pull sometimes. She is getting much better tho.I been working real hard with her.

  17. I took my dog to obience school when she was under 1 yr. and the instrustor suggested that because the choke collar wasn't working to get the prong collar. It worked at first, but her pain tolence is so high I reliezed she was rubbing herself raw -we use the body harness and she still pulls but at least I know she's not hurting herself without even know it. I would think that if a dog trainer uses prong collars as training tools it isn't cruel-I wonder how she feels about shock collars? haha

I use prong collars on my leash-pullers & they work great. Whenever I get an undeucated bleeding heart that thinks I'm being "cruel" for using a prong collar I point out that my dog is a leash-puller. I add choke chains can cause irrepairable damage to a puller's trachia & that I'm using the prong for the dog's own safety. This usually works. If the person is receptive I also encourage them to touch the prongs, as many ppl think they're sharp. When they sell how dull they are coupled w/ the info that you're using the prong for the dog's own safety, many ppl will change their mind.

I def reccomend the prong collar over the choke chain any day. But with both, you have to use them correctly. It's important that the prong collar fit properly though, otherwise it can hurt the dog.

I started using the prong collar on Lexas about 6 months ago, when the choke collars weren't working. I read about the prong collar in an issue of "Bully Breeds" that my mom bought me at PetsMart. The next day after reading the article, I went to PetsMart and bought one for like $15. I love it, the only time she pulls with it on is when I take her to my friend's house to play with his pit bull (she gets real excited.)
