I was just wondering if anyone knows of some kind of product I can use to keep my female pit from chewing on her tail and back. She has flea allergies and every since her first "break out" she won't stop chewing. (EVEN IF SHE DOESN"T HAVE FLEAS!!!!) She doesn't chew as much as she doesn't have any fleas. But she still chews a little, it seems like she does it when she's bored. Any suggestions?

Wash her in some oatmeal shampoo with tea tree oil. Its very soothing. Spray a little bit of "Grannicks Bitter Apple Spray" on her where she is chewing, as long as there are no open sores. Give your vet a call and see if you can give her some Benadryl or something. Maybe give her some new toys or take her out more often so she wont be so bored. Good Luck!

I seem to be the only one, but I do NOT recomend any sprays. My old dobe had VERY severe allergies, both food and contact. He was very thin and would chew and scratch himself bloody. The spray will keep him from chewing until it wears off (does not take long) when it does wear off and if you don't catch it (you are bound to have other things to do and will more than likely miss this) the dog REALLY goes to town chewing because it had all that pent-up itching to do. I completely changed my dog by feeding him the best, in my case I cooked his food. You can buy some good foods if you don't want to cook. So long as there are no by-products, wheat or corn. Some dogs are allergic to different meats, but this is very uncommon, it is almost always wheat/corn allergies. I also had to rinse my dog off in the tub at least daily. I lived in NM and it is very dusty so the dust caused irritation. Whenever he came inside I would rinse him and he spent most of his time indoors. Allergies really suck, some animals take steroids, but this is for very severe cases and the steroids have side effects.
Flea allergies are very nasty, but if she doesn't have fleas than she is breaking out from something else. Try these things and I'm sure you will notice an incredible difference. My roommate's dog was also very thing, very itchy and his skin was yellow and flaky. After a while she listened to my suggestion of switching his food and within one month he never chews, is a great weight and his coat looks great. She thought that because she was feeding an expensive, all natural food (she bought from the health food store) that the diet was good, but in many foods that seem good quality there are a lot of wheat, corn and by-product fillers. Check the diet.

  4. Maybe try putting one of those cones on hr head to keep her from getting to her tail. We had one for my moms lab, cause she was pulling the hair out on her tail, and it worked great.

Yea, if any of you have noticed, lately I had been asking a lot of questions about different diets and dog food brands. I want to switch her food (she's currently on Science Diet) as many of you on here say that Science Diet isn't very good. I would like to put her on a raw diet, but I have to get a part-time job for that (I'm 16 in high school still) b/c my parents said that that is too expensive for them to pay for.

I have tried Green Apple spray, it doesn't work, she licks it right off. I think she licks bitter tasting things...I'll try the oatmeal wash though.
