I'm not getting defensive. Just thoroughly explaining myself. ;) And I'm not dissing Orijen as a "bad food". Of course it's the dog if the dog doesn't do well on it! They can have food sensitivities, allergies, digestive issues that can make an otherwise "quality food" not work for them. If your dog is allergic to chicken and you feed it the highest quality organic chicken that was raised on the lap of.Jesus, doesn't mean the dog will do well on it. lol

Zoe.. i had the same problem with high protein kibble, until i added water inside the bowl.. just enough to cover the kibble. Then my dogs had a solid poo poo.. from puppys to adults. When giving kibble.. i do add water, olive oil and apple cinder vinegar, cheap and healthy!

I always add water to my dogs food as well. Just too add... they don't do well on other high protien foods as well. Had the same issue with EVO, Solid Gold Sun Dancer, etc.... If your dog does well on something more power to ya, but I'm not going to feed my dogs a food they do shitty on because someone elses dog does good on it. lol I've been feeding hundreds of dogs for two decades and one thing I have learned is not to listen to vets, other people and what food their dogs rock, advertizing, etc.... but too look at the DOG. ;)

raw is the only way to go...period.It is 100% better for the dog.It is Cheaper to feed your dog raw if you prepare it.The ONLY downside to raw is it takes a little more time to prepare.Dogs inside were not intended to eat kibble.I wish people realized this.
  5. Zoe

    Zoe CH Dog

Well, not everyone can feed raw. I have over the years off and on but with an immune compromised kid in the house it is not recommended. Everyone feeds what they feed for their own reasons.....
  6. I'm not making any assumptions here, but when I hear that multiple dogs from the same household are "not doing well" on a very high-quality dry kibble, I start to question other variables. Food allergies are not typically shared amongst dogs who simply co-habitate.

    * Are these dogs from the same family/linage? Some alergies stand a chance of being genetically linked.

    * Is the food being stored in an environment conducive to shelf-life/freshness?

    * Was the food purchased from the same source? The food could have been expired, mishandled, or a contaminated batch from the factory.

    * Are the dogs bowls/dishes being properly cleaned and maintained

    * Was the water quality compromised during the time of feeding this food?

    * Were the dogs weaned onto the new food properly?

    * Could those particular dogs have gotten into any toxins, chemicals, plants, wildlife, etc that made them sick during this time?

    * .....etc, etc, etc.

Yes, the dogs I have fed it to are related and interestingly, I read the same thing in Gary Hammonds book about the high protien dog foods in reference to his dogs. My dogs are down from Mayfield's Sunshine. ;)

And no... the dogs enviroment has not in some way affected the situation. I have retried the high protien foods on numerous different occasions with the same results. Why is it so hard to believe that there a dogs in which these foods don't work? lol
  8. Zoe

    Zoe CH Dog

And get this... the many foods the do do well on have one thing in common... moderate protien levels! Imagine that! lol These aren't the dogs with allergies by the way. It's the rescues with the allergy issues...
  9. It's not hard to believe that therer are dogs in which these foods don't work for. It is, however, curious that there are multiple dogs in the same house in which these foods don't work for.

As far as "high-protein" foods are concerned, if your dogs are even mildly active, you shouldn't be having an issue. If you have couch potatoes, high-protein food is useless anyways.

When multiple dogs have the same, unusual issue...you should begin looking for other common factors.
  10. Zoe

    Zoe CH Dog

I'd say the common factor is their breeding. Are your dogs related? Maybe that's why they all do well on it. lol

    Whether I should or shouldn't, I am.

It's odd.... I have met multiple people who feed Orijen and the discussion is always the same. They are convinced all dogs need to be on it. It's weird. Are you sure you're not a rep? lol j/k

The pet food store near my house are great when it comes to food and they agree.... it's just too rich for some dogs.

  11. Definitely not a Rep. I don't even feed the stuff. It is a very high-quality food, easily in the top 5% of commercially available dry dog foods. However, I would not spend that much money when I could feed raw for 1/8 of the cost. I feel like an idiot right now, and I'm only spending half of what Orijen costs. When my housing situation changes, I'll go right back to RAW.
  12. I feed my 2 year old pit Orijen Adult and it's a 6 star feed. This food is the next best sing from raw. Only difference Orijen is kibble. Go with adult instead of red meat. Adult has more fish and omega oils for skin and shinny coat. Your pup is young so feed a quality feed. Also once a week I put a tea spoon of Omega oils onto her feed. You will see results in more ways then one. Best of luck.

Kibble is extruded meat and carb sources...big difference from natural raw meat and they should not be compared with one another as they don't compare.
A decent raw feed (grocery store bought ingredients) without butcher freebies or scraps, cost about $60 a month. About the same as a med grade bag is kibble.
Prepping, bagging and storing is the real work, and more work if you have multiple dogs.

The digestive ability of feeding kibble done the right way is the same or even BETTER then feeding raw!!.depending on the quality dry kibbel you feed. you ever heard of Beef jerky!!. I am sure you have well 100 grams of beef jerky comes from 240 grams of raw undried beef!!. same with dried salted fish http://www.saltfish.com/preparation.html
this means when you SOAK the meat or fish again it takes on the natural water to meat contents and volume it once was.
if you then take your dried veggies and rice or cereal and blend them up to a pulp when dry, and press them together with the meat or the fish into a pallet. all the same quality contents nutrients from the fresh vegetables meat-fish are in that Pallet without losing quality, same as your raw ingredients you use to feed your dog .Nothing has changed only the water has been taken out!. and it looks different and unrecognizable because its
grinded to tiny little grains as big as Sand..........

NOW soak these pallets, and all these ingredients used get there natural water to meat/veggies contents and volume back....
If you DON'T do that then a dog will need to take water from his NATURAL fluid house hold!!.In order to TRY to digest the kibble. However this is far LESS efficient, with the result that part of the dry food comes out undigested and a dogs SYSTEM is triggered to uphold there water/fluid level and they start to drink allot!!.

(many a dog does not have access to water 24/7 either. Which will make the dog Dehydrated even more and get more loose runny stool when fed un-soaked dry food. this is a HUMAN ERROR when this happens.
its not because the dry food is bad!!.. In these cases where Human Error is present then feeding raw on the chain or kennel gives the dog more/better internal water house hold)

This is also the same reason why dogs fed of raw meat and kibble at the same time get the runs .
Because the kibble needs more water to digest at the same speed and rate (quicker denser en better when soaked), as RAW meat does.

Now if you would SOAK the dry Food first and ad meat then digestive ability will be PERFECT. In fact quality Dog food/kibble is actually PREDIGESTED as everything has been grinded down to grains as big as sand prior to be made into a pallet. meaning the STOMACH ACID has less afford and trouble to break down the large chunks of meat bone and veggies!!!!! witch are given when feeding raw.. which separately need different times to digest!!. Now if you put all your raw meat and bone and vegges and stick them in a meat grinder and grind it to pulp. and feed that to your dog you will see a even BETTER digestive ability of all the ingredients.

if we go one step further. and have that PULP dried out first where all the water contents is taken out, and make 200 pellets out of that quality dried mixture that you made.( did we just made dry food/kibble !? )
and later soak it in 120/140% of the same volume of water. then it will get the ""same"" volume and water contents as it was PRIOR to being DRIED. QUALITY is the same DIGESTIVE ABILITY IMPROVES. And that my friends is how the cookie crumbles.

Nothing more or less. and again IT ALL Depends if YOU, the owner are able to FEED the RIGHT way and select the BEST dry food/kibble for your animals..
On top of that it DEPENDS if YOU the owner buys the correct dry food/kibble and find out the right weight of kibble to be soaked to feed your dog.

    It's a sales pitch mate.
The reason he talks so high about kibble and talks raw down is because he sales kibble and bad kibble too.
It's cheap it's got BTA/ BHT and is aslo filled with corn.

right on Zoe!! - i also have been in the same conversations with folks that feed the orijen.
Their reasons for the better quality was said to be because or wording in front of the ingredients, such as:

"ranch raised", "cage free" or the name of the fish such as "northern Pike"
The heated debates i was in over this previously were about 5-6 mounths ago, and the orijen site and ingredients have changed already, and theyu have some new blends. ..
if it aint broke, dont fix it - and like you were saying - every dog is different and all will not get the same result from the same kibble - that is a fact. Anyone who has fed enough dogs will attest to those facts.
Geographic location is also to be figured into the diet. Say a dog living in Arizona will not have the same result as a dog from Canada or Florida.

I feed kibble and suppliment in some raw at certain times of the year(winter or in a show keep).
I have fed raw before and am happy with feeding kibble. Its all in what you want or have time for.

The experience in Limeys post have merit behind them also. He has done studies and posted them here and there.

To each their own - simply put.

The post concerning Limey was about his comparison to kibble and salted fish. Thinking kibble is "dehydrated" food when its not! Its processed, over-cooked meat/carbs/fruits and veggies with added vitamins and minerals.
Adding water to kibble may help it digest in the dogs system easier but it doesn't bring the extruded ingredients back to its raw form and offer the same benefits as raw, which is what I got from his post! LOL
