I know there are many threads already on this, I just wanted to make sure my question didn't get overlooked. I have just started raw feeding. I mean all I've done is give the dog a 1 lb leg quarter the last two days. I'm still giving him kibble as well (~12 hours after the chicken) since I don't have any supplements.

My question is: What supplements other (not the meat) do I need to stock up on? I've seen ya'll using vitamins: What kind? I've also seen lard, oil, and apple cider being used. Where to purchase and what kind? Just want to make sure I have everything before I make the complete switch. When you guys started, what else did you go stock up on besides the meat?

Thanks for all ya'lls help in advance.

  3. Don't over think this feed question you have. IMO, choose raw or choose kibble do one or other. If you are going to be feeding RAW, feed raw and stay consistent but if you are going to feed kibble, feed kibble and throw the dog a raw leg or something every so often. If I was doing, don't worry so much about supplements, those are those city doggers who searching the internet reading pet owners ideas. The reason of feeding RAW is just that, top of the line in quality ingredients. The digestive side of feeding RAW is giving the dog a complete diet, at best maybe use a 1/4 or 1/2 a multivitamin depending on the size of the dog. The reason you feed RAW it is complete within itself and the other stuff is just over the top. I can understand maybe throwing in some extras like ACV or some type of oil just to make that coat look even better but once you go RAW you will see the difference. KISS- Keep It Super Simple and your results will be good. Quality meats, bones and organs - alternate. Get a good receipe from research while considering which carbs being noodles or brown rice IMO works the best and then start reasearching what veggies or fruits you might use to complete it. Things like carrots are a good vegetable bases, additives like greens, bananas, celery, beets are addtives I have used through the week switching up so they are in peak performance. KISS and everything will be fine.

    i feed like this.
    1 leg quarter
    2 soft boiled eggs
app. 1 cup of twice d=cooked brown rice
    heaping spoon of yogurt
heaping spoon of lard ( fried a turkey at thanksgiving so i using that oil now..
    heaping spoon of greens (collards/turnip)
    1/2 multivitamin every other day...
some days it is straight meats with no mixes..i feed a lot of chicken necks and backs....and on occasion i add kibble instead of rice as the filler...i work 12 hour rotating shifts and feeding in the dark is sometimes difficult...
i feed mostly chicken but a lot of deer this time of year....other red meats when they are cheap....most everything needed is included in a simple raw diet like this one and if there is anything missing it is covered with the multivitamin...for breeding males i use wheat germ oil also....
i have never bought into the differing digestive rates before...i feed the raw 95% of the time and a day or so a month the kibble is mixed in...it is not like the dog is fed and everything is assimilated or discharged and you feed all over again....so the differing rates have never been a factor for me...i switxched to raw beacuse it is better and cheaper...or cheaper and better....LOL

  8. We feed raw.I add to it Nupro and salmon oil.If you are feeding a well balanced raw diet there is really no need to add rice and all that other crapy carbs. But then again every dog is different.

I like to add to raw feed a 1/2 serving of Nupro, fish oil caps and Vit E caps.
I get alot of butcher scraps without bone...so whenever I feed alot of muscle meat with no bone I like to add a few calcium tablets and a sliced apple!

    I feed:

    1 leg quarter
Heaping scoop of greens or carrots
    Small scoop of cottage cheese
    1/2 multi-vitamin
Omega-3 every two or three days

I throw in an egg every now and again. The water I use to boil the greens gets divided between the dogs. One of my dogs didn’t like the carrots whole so I started cooking then grinding them up in a blender, no problems since.

Do you guys feed a whole leg quarter? 1 whole leg quarter can weigh a pound. My dogs weigh on average about 50 pounds on the chain. I thought I was only suppose to give them 1 pound of food total.

  12. I used to weigh things out and stuff. But now I just go by the looks of the dog.If one week the dog looks alittle thin I'll up the food and if the dog is looking chunky I'll cut it down. Some dogs no matter how much you feed them could be thin or chunky.Take for instance my German Shorthaired Pointer.Active hunting dog.I could feed him the same amount as a Great Dane and the dog would still have some hip showing to him.So I would have to had some rolled oats to his food once aweek or more Chicken skins.

I feed 3 percent of what my dog weighs and 70 of that is RMB. I feed the whole chicken quarter or more if need be. i feed veggie glop and organ meat in the morning and give the chicken leg quarter or duck ( i get a great price on duck carcasses) after i get home from work.

you really just need to watch your dogs weight and pay attention to there stools to see if there getting to much bone or not enough.

  14. Oh one more thing. If your dogs never been on raw before and your just starting out. They are going to look like shit for awhile and may get the shits. Its from there body detoxing from all the crap kibble.

  15. Good diet!!

This is what I feed..Someone tell me if I need to tweek this any ...

1 lb of RAW meat...this can be chicken or beef but mostly chicken. I weigh on a digital scale

5 oz of organ meat, hearts, liver, brain, kidney just what I have on hand.

I give 1/2 cup of what I call my carb mixture a day...here is what is in that...

Chicken boiled de-boned and I use the broth to make brown rice. Makes about 3 cups. I allow this to cool, I add 1 can of green beans, 1 can of turnip greens, 1 can of pumpkin, 1 can of sweet potatoes, a container of blue berries and a few chopped up apples. I measure out 1/ cup servings and place in the freezer.

At feeding time I add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the carb mixture and meat and feed.

i just got the breeding secrets from jack...it is much better than i thought it would be....just switched to this type of veggie mix...bought a juicer...i make myself a basically natural pitcher of juice and the pulp i feed to the dogs as the veggie additive...sort of getting twice as much usage per vegetable purchase...so far so good....US1

I add organic flax seed oil, organic soft boiled eggs every other day, organic acv, and organic plain non fat yogurt. I use to supplement brown rice on occasion or what I also had done was blend in my magic bullet blender: carrots, broccoli, sweet pees, and cauliflower. Then I would freeze it and give about 2 tablespoons once every week or two. I really want to start supplementing green tripe though.

Thanks to all ya'll for your suggestions. I really appreciate ya'll putting samples of your diets out there. I had started slow, not knowing which direction to go in. But now I think I can get all my stuff and feel confident in what I am feeding.

    Thanks again.

I took it as 1 lb of just raw meat, plus the supplements. Not for sure though, but that seems what a lot of people have been doing.
