barrel houses

I buy them at the feed store,$12.50 each

 

If you live in a big city like i do usally you can find a company that a give them away. but make sure u clean it out good. also i use a five gallon bucket too trace a hole size out and cut wit a jig saw should be plenty room for most dogs to get in and out. This also helps keep straw or cedar in the barrel while they clime in and out the chain dont pull it out.

 

how is it that the chain dont pull out the straw?

 

you leave a 5-6'' lip at the front on the bottom the door only has top be 7-8'' by 12'' tall, center it on the top of the barrel skill saw or sawzall it out, alot easier, it will also fit between the pour holes they have on some of the barrels.

Feed Supply Store And Hardware Stores all you have to do is ask and most of the time they are behind the store around 15-20 dollars.

 

tangdog i use the exact same method for my hole cut out.

 

Go on craigslist.com for your area or a county close by and type in 55 gallon drum. A lot of places have them for sale and most of the time are only used once for food containment.

Buck, Do you use the barrels in the winter. Just curious. It doesnt seem like they would be enough in the dead of winter up north.

 

this is what i use , with rubber truck flaps, lots of straw, the small the space the warmer the dog. never had frostbite or anything, had dogs up here in -40 and stay warm long as beddings dry and there on a skip "wooden pallet" up off the ground with a air space, they will stay plenty warm.

those ones yardboy just made would be best tho.

these i build 6 the exact same and they cost me $300

theses are best up north, but you can do the plastic barrel , its on another foroum, so im a ask the folks if they mind if i post them, i know he sells them to help kennel fees, so you wont get plans but you can get the basic idea or the proper barrel winter house, they get moldy bedding with them les=ft as is in the winter, the barrels unless covered, and canopy made for it...

 

no matter what wood house you build it should be warmer than the plastic for the dog, wood holds heat, good r value:rolleyes:

pups get used to the flap pretty fast, but you will see them get chewed, so keep an eye, they lasted about a week once the figure they could chew them

 

I woulodent use the barrols in the Mi cold but I know those who do. Here is the one I built last summer.

whats the material made of 1" plywood?, looks thicker tho...would be good for up north winters to, canopy to keep the wet snow out, and rain:cool:
