All people have flaws even gentlemen lol .. I am not sure what you mean by "the things they did" nice clothes doesn't make someone a gentlemen...

You hear some negatives but like most things you never hear the positives.Yes,I believe there have been people of all types in the sport. From gentlemen who were honest to crooks who were not.Best thing we can do is conduct ourselves in a gentlemanly manner. That's the only thing we have control over is how we ourselves act.

Well if you are going to ask a question you need to be a little more specific than "a lot of the things they did" .. You hear and read all types of things doesn't make them true.I think the biggest problem is that people tend to place these so called "gentleman" of the past on pedestals when the truth is they were no more perfect than you or me in fact there were plenty of them that were crooks. I am well aware of the sport once being referred to as a "gentleman sport" but what makes someone a gentleman is not the clothing on their backs it's a man who is civilized, educated, well mannered, that comes from a good family, breeding, or social position. And then there is something called being human people are susceptible to being human under certain circumstances regardless of one's moral character or social standing.

I think the best way to answer this question would be by doing your historical research of matches that took place early in the sport and during the time that it was refered to as such, then define what gentlemanly behaviour meant to the people at that time. You can't take the modern day definition of a gentleman and interject it into the late 1800's as the meaning has changed a great deal over the years to suit the people of this day and age. If your looking for a yes or no answer based on each members opinion then my opinion is YES, it was a gentlemans sport at one time and still is today in many circles (WHERE IT IS LEGAL) although the majority of modern day dogman wannabee's are really fucking things up for the breed by mixing Drugs, Guns and Bulldogging in places where it doesn't belong.

I once asked an old dogman what was the best way to start in the dogs and his answer was quite simple "DONT".

You need to read George Armitage's "30 Years with Fighting Dogs" if you think it was ever a gentleman's sport. If you want choir boys go to church.

Real talk... Notice I didn't even respond to that post lol I well say this, I don't think golf & dogs can even be compared... I also don't believe, we have ever had a gentleman for a president lol now, this my shock you bb, but what you said goes for men too(for course not as a general rule, but...)lol

BOT, I don't believe it will ever be a gentlemens sport... Now that doesn't mean there are no gentlemen in it, but finding one is harder than breeding a gr ch... Imho

Guess I just as well put my .02 in. There have been people of all types in these dogs.People of every race, religion and social level. Since the first two dogs fought, someone has been putting money on who would win, most likely, lol. It is as foolish to say everyone was a gentleman as it would be that everyone wasn't and vice versa. To many participants to lump all into one basket. I'm sure at one time,it was at least as well as it is today because honestly I don't believe the quality of humanity in general has improved at all and probably has declined.Either that or the internet has opened it up to a lot more individuals getting into the dogs and therefore allowing some people in that wouldn't have otherwise done so and we get to see and hear more about the not so gentlemanly people, lol. Anytime you get a sport where betting is involved and money is at stake, there will be cheats, thieves and liars. There will also be good, honest people but who ever hears about the good. You hear about the rubs, stolen dogs and rip offs because that's a lot more interesting for someone to talk about than so and so showed up with a good dog, done his thing on the up and up and was just a great person to deal with. That's boring, lol (but the way it should be) Wouldn't online peds be a dead place if no one told their lies and back bit and spread false rumors. It was also be a lot better place too.Half those people never set a dog down anyway, lol The sport was as good as the people made it,some people were legitimately good people and a lot were not. Notice, I did not say perfect people. We all have faults and flaws, but the gentleman should fight against those and try to do good. The reference to golf,I understand because golf is thought of (by many anyway) as a gentleman's sport, but there's very few "real" gentleman in it most likely.Tiger Woods is just a man, that cheats on his wife, like many men do involved other activities. He's human with human flaws.Golf is primarily made up of supposed upper class people but are they gentleman, not necessarily IMHO. The lawyers and politicians, bank owners and etc that play golf are probably as gentlemanly as the street corner drug dealer that rubs his dog. They just wear different clothes but both probably should be knocked in the head and thrown in a dumpster. I believe that was probably the point of the golf reference,it didn't mean the games were similar, just the imperfections of the participants. Most of the Presidents were not gentleman, some may have been.I can't say, being I don't know them but some were obviously not. I guess what I am saying is whether it be the dog game, golf, politics, baseball, football, basketball, you name it,anytime people get together you will most likely have good people and bad.You can't say it's all one way or the other. And it don't matter, just make sure you yourself behave in a proper manner and that's all you can do and try to deal with others that do whenever possible. The clothes you wear or the money you make does not make you a gentleman or otherwise. The guy in the nice clothes could well be a worse person than the guy in old wore out clothes. Appearances doesn't make the man,the actions do. At this point,it doesn't matter whether it was a gentleman sport or not.All those people are dead or retired anyway.

It went way over you're head ... I am not comparing golf to dog sporting I am simply stating the fact that both have been considered a gentleman's sport/game.
