Detectives with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) busted a dogfighting ring on Sunday night, November 24, just outside of Douglas on Kathryn Circle that led to the arrest of four men and the seizure of 11 pit bull dogs. A 911 call from a concerned citizen led to the bust.

According to CCSO detectives, a call was placed to the Coffee County 911 Center around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening about a possible dogfight in progress.

A deputy responded to a residence located at 169 Kathryn Circle and upon arrival witnessed three pickup trucks, all with “dog crates” in the beds of the trucks.

The deputy heard “people yelling” and “dogs fighting” in a wooded area behind the residence and started walking down a trail, at which time he witnessed several black men “standing around a square pen” with two dogs fighting inside.

One of the men “insisted nothing was going on” and began walking toward the officer at a “fast pace.” The officer then pulled his service weapon and ordered the man to stop, which he eventually did, and the man was ordered to the ground, along with his son, who is just 10 years old. The man was later identified as David Reed, the homeowner.

Several participants at the fight were able to flee in a wooded area and escape, though deputies spotted two individuals, Reginald Hawkins and Maurice Glover, in the wooded area, and both were apprehended.

A fourth individual, Roger Oliver, was spotted walking down a nearby road “sweated down” and was apprehended by a deputy.

At the scene, detectives uncovered a square fighting pen constructed out of white mobile home doors that was approximately 15 feet by 15 feet in size.

Parts of the fighting “ring” were covered in blood and a pit bull dog was injured inside the pen. In all, 10 other dogs were located on the property, many chained to trees, and all were seized. The dogs are being held at the Douglas Humane Society until the case is complete.

Detectives learned during interviews that the dogfighting ring had been active at the home for over a year. The ring was approximately 50 feet behind the home.

Detectives also believe that gambling was not a factor in this fight, as the men said they were fighting the dogs for “bragging rights.”

David Reed, age 41, the homeowner where the fight took place, was arrested and charged with felony Dogfighting. Also facing felony Dogfighting charges are Roger Lee Oliver, age 51 of a Mimosa Lane address in Douglas, and Maurice Glover, age 40 of a Creekwood Road address in Douglas.

A fourth man, 36-year old Reginald Hawkins of a Kamara Road address in Douglas, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor Dogfighting. Hawkins did not have a dog at the fight, though witnessing a dogfight is still a crime.

Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten commented, “Dogfighting or any other type of animal cruelty for that matter will not be tolerated by this administration. Our deputies and detectives did a great job investigating this case and they should be commended. Thanks to the help of a concerned citizen, we were able to put an end to this disturbing act of violence.”

If you suspect any type of animal cruelty, please contact the CCSO at 912-384-4227, the TIPS Line at 912-384-8477, or call 911.
