    BRAINTREE —

An infant was treated at South Shore Hospital after accidentally getting pepper sprayed during a violent confrontation between police and a trio from Dorchester.

The baby girl was turned over to the state Department of Children and Families following the trio’s arrest Sunday night.

Braintree police were called to the Motel 6 on Union Street Sunday on a report that a pit bull was being beaten. John K. Boampong Jr., 27, told the officers that he was disciplining his dog but police said they could see the animal cowering in the corner with an open wound on its forehead.

When police said they wanted an animal control officer to check the dog, Boampong allegedly became enraged, and ran head-first into an officer and knocking him off his feet. While one officer tried to hold back a woman holding the baby, Jan J. Ellis,22, and another man in the motel room, Reyes R. Familia Jr., 18, the other officer tried to arrest Boampong. Ellis was described as Boampong's companion.

Police said the two men appeared to be readying for another run at the officers. That’s when one of the officers sprayed them with pepper spray. Ellis was holding the baby in her arms at the time and some of the spray hit the infant.

One of the officers suffered bruises and abrasions but nothing that required medical attention. Boampong was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and animal cruelty.

Reyes and Ellis were charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Braintree’s animal control officer took the dog.

I'm not even surprised anymore about the anti pitbull people's view on "pit bull" owners with stories like these...
