A fell terrier is not a specific breed, but a type of working terrier that originated from the north of England. They are typically used for hunting foxes, badgers, and other vermin. A Patterdale terrier is one of the breeds that belong to the fell terrier group. It was developed by Joe Bowman, a huntmaster from the Lake District, in the early 20th century. Patterdale terriers are also known as black fell terriers³.

Some of the differences between a fell terrier and a Patterdale terrier are:

    - Fell terriers can have various coat colors, such as red, tan, liver, grizzle, or chocolate. Patterdale terriers are mostly black, with some white patches on the chest and feet¹.
    - Fell terriers can have different coat types, such as smooth, rough, or broken. Patterdale terriers usually have a smooth coat that lies close to the body².
    - Fell terriers can vary in size and weight, depending on the breed. Patterdale terriers are small and sturdy, weighing between 11 and 13 pounds on average¹.
    - Fell terriers can have different temperaments, depending on the breed. Patterdale terriers are known for being loyal, energetic, intelligent, and independent¹. They are also less vocal than other terriers².
