He is head of the North Carolina State University tick borne disease center. I have spoken to him many times, and when babesia was first known to us doggers, he co-opped with me on 3 of my dogs. He is the true pioneer of curing babesia. Yes, Adam is a great guy, and loves bulldogs.

Have also spoken to Professor Chibale about the compound and they are aware that Babesiosis and Malaria have their similarities but was answered with "their prioroties lie immediately with the urgent cure of Malaria in people at this time", bearing in mind that about half a million kids die of malaria in Africa per year. They will however subject the compound to a number of tests. The difficulty would now ly in the Veterinary industry getting their hands on the compound for testing on animals.

news flash we have treated cured 2 dogs who had Barbesia Gibsony.
Cali Jack was IS right!!. iventho he is ,in my mind way of the scale with his raw feeding. in this case he is spot on. We have(on vet,s advice) given the dogs that had Gibsony .1 shot of 0.5cc Carbesia. then for 10 days Welvone, 750 mg atovaquone.2 cc 3x a day. and 10 days ones a day 5cc sandox Azitromycine 200mg/5ml .
the Carbesia is a vaccination for al barbesia strains witch last 6 weeks and a treadmend for al strains but as we reasendly learned questionable with Gibsony . The welvone is a human medicen for the treadment of Malaria and pnumonya for Aids patients. The sandox is a human antibiotic for sexual transmitted diseases . This was taken from the vets PC on a world wide Vet forum consirning these diseases. so far so there have been dogs tested for over 3 years and they came up clean . sporting dogs have been tested and there sporting prey and al of them came up clean!!!. pups from bitches treaded came up clean as did treated stud dogs and brood bitches.

Here is some info from the internet as wel..

Mepron can cause rash, gastro intestinal effects, fever, and headache in patients, but while these side effects are bothersome they are not life threatening or fatal. These side effects have been reported to occur up to 63% of the time, and an eye disorder - vortex keratopathy - has also been reported. The dosage is 13.3 mg/kg, every 8 hours, continued for 10 days. I have no idea where to get this drug online. In South Africa Atovaquone is manufactured by Glaxo Smithkline under the brand name Wellvone Suspension. However because this is a S4 scheduled drug its best to get your vet / pharamacy to get it for you. The above is solid info, but if you try any of the recommendations here you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. I make no warranties or claims here. <o:p> </o

This is a Case Study of a pup diagnosed with Babesi Gibsoni

The pup was taken to the vet for routine vaccinations; the only indication that there was something ‘fishy’ was a slight increase in temperature. At this stage the pup was showing no signs that are displayed with the chronic/acute form. The pup was eating normally and gaining weight, had normal energy levels and was showing no signs of pale gums or anorexia. A blood smear was done in order to evaluate why the pup had a slightly higher than normal temperature. Once, this along with a PCV test was evaluated, it was determined that the pup had Babesia Gibsoni. This was then sent to Onderstepoort for further analysis and verification. The pup was put on a dose of Berenil and was to receive a new smear in 3 days.<o:p> </o
<o:p> </o
The pup was then taken back to the vet for a new smear and to see how the Berenil had reacted to the parasite. There was a definite decrease in the parasite however it was still there. The decision to wait until the Berenil had completed its course before starting the Foray was taken. Again, after a week the Foray was administered and after a few days had passed, another smear was done. However, we noticed that the Foray had done just about nothing to this parasite, it was still there.<o:p> </o
<o:p> </o
It is important to note that after 3 weeks since initial diagnosis the pup was still showing absolutely no signs of illness. The pup had gained some substantial weight, the coat was shiny and healthy and the pup was displaying all the energy levels pups at that age display.<o:p> </o
<o:p> </o
A decision was made to follow the Atovaquone/Azithromycin route and on the 14th of October 2004 the pup underwent treatment.
Update: 29th October 2004:- The pup completed the 10 day course of Atovaquone/Azithromycin and was returned to the Vet on the 25th of October 2004. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY to report that the blood smear revealed zero parasites and that the reticular cells were normal. A blood sample was sent to Onderstepoort for a PCV test to varify the above result. The pup also showed none of the side effects listed above with the Atovaquone/Azithromycin combo.
Update: 12th November 2004:- I returned the pup to the Vet for vaccinations and two more blood smears were done. Once again the smears came up negative, there were no signs of the parasite and all other cells were functioning normally.
Update: 18th April 2005:- I Another PCV test was done and I'm happy to report that no parasites were detected.
Update: 3rd March 2006:- Yet Another PCV test was done and yet again I'm happy to report that no parasites were detected.

They didn't do a splenectomy to check if the parasites were lying dormant in the spleen. Sure Atovaquone/Azithromycin will knock it out the blood cells but if its in your dog its in your dog. The current drugs only knock it into remission, its like Malaria there is no total cure for it as yet and relapse can occur.

Celtic Warrior have you had dogs that sufferd from it and used these meds!!??. We did.
And Like Malaria when you use atovaquone /Azitromycine you have a 80% chanse it out of your system for LIFE......... There have now been plenty of aczamples where dogs under sevear stress and testing have been clear for YEARS. have been bred with no showing up wat so ever..

Despite a plethora of anecdotal reports and uncontrolled experimental data, there is a paucity of scientifically robust evidence regarding the efficacy of drugs that have been used to treat canine babesiosis over the last 100 years. Early treatment studies were hampered by the need to rely on clinical signs and blood films to determine parasite clearance. More recently the limitations have been the cost of establishing controlled infections and the relatively small numbers of experimental dogs permitted by animal ethics committees. In order to determinate the efficacy of an anti-piroplasm drug with reasonable confidence, necropsy-obtained tissues from all organs need to be tested by validated PCR at the end of the experiment; clearance of the parasite DNA from peripheral blood alone is insufficient evidence of cure.

I had a dog that came down with the disease from ingesting a rabbit that she caught that had it so I wouldn't recommend that a dog be worked or worked against that had the disease as the process of ingesting blood from or by an infected dog will pass the disease along. The dog was treated with the atavaquone/azithromycine rout but never came right, she had it too bad.

3 pcr tests so far. the dog had it REAL BAD. infackt i got a phone call while on vacation for 4 weeks. the dog sufferd for 3 weeks. on return whe had to do a test first wich took another week. bij that time he was in grave bad shape. we put him on ironciclen iron tonic performer rpm health tonic and where able to stabelize his very low hemocrite level. at first they gave the dog the oldschool treadmend that puts the diseas in remission. But afther 5 months in came back. and i told them to chek for wich strain he got efected with . wich was Gibsony. Then the welvone combination was started.
The dog snapt out of it real fast. and has been put under stress more then ones sins and had 3 pcr tests. nothing ever showed up. and the dog fully recuverd and had NO lasting damage watsoever being claimed bij others on varius forums in the past.. the treadmend is very ecspensif, but if you have dogs that are worth it. i sirguest you pay the price..

best is to keep the dog and his living space clear of ticks, dip often and sprinkle with carbo dust or use the frontline, prevention is best option, there is no cure for it, if it gets in your dog its there forever.

So is Atovaquone plus Azithromicine a cure now or just a treatment?
And how long you need to rest a dog you think who has Babesia before working for confo shows again?
