Portland, OR --Multnomah County animal authorities said Friday that they were investigating the abandonment of an injured pit bull that was found in a Southeast Portland park.

The dog's extensive wounds appeared to be from a fight with another animal, said Mike Oswald, Multnomah County Animal Services director.

Someone called Portland police at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday to report finding an injured dog in Gilbert Heights Park near Southeast 130th Avenue and Southeast Holgate Boulevard, west of Powell Butte Nature Park.

The male adult dog had been placed in a sheet and had "multiple injuries on its head, chest and legs consistent with some kind of dogfight," Oswald said.

The dog had a collar but no identifying information. It also did not have an embedded identifying microchip, he said.

The dog was treated for its wounds at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Northwest Portland and then taken to the veterinary services area of the county animal shelter in Troutdale, Oswald said.

A Vancouver woman, who reported a pit bull missing from her home Wednesday, identified the injured dog as hers Thursday. On Friday, however, she said it was not. The woman will be questioned in the case, Oswald said.
