Hughes vs. Gracie

I have to go w/Matt. I know all of the diehard BJJ fans are gonna flame, but seriously... Royce has been out of the game for years, hes a rusty old man.
Matt is at his prime, he is strong as a damn bear. Now it is possilbe that Matt could get caught (BJ Penn caught him), but i think that Matt will just control Royce, and hopefully knock his block off.

Did you know that Royce is getting a $1.3 Million pay out, and Matt is getting $80,000.00? IF i was a "legend" you'd have to pay me a shit load to come out and get beat too! haha

My other bets- Jeremy will beat Chael AGAIN (for the 3rd time!), Joe will take out Mike, Alessio better take out Sanchez (i cannot stand him!), and i hope Spencer takes the W.

Hughes all the way, Gracie isn't an all around fighter he usually sticks to one style while Matt whoops @$$ in many different styles. I think 2nd round knockout.

 

Miss Conduct, you from Illinois also? I'm rooting for Hughes, the way I see it is Gracie has about a 1% shot of getting that lucky submission in to win the fight. Back when Gracie dominated, BJJ was an exotic form, that only a select few knew. Now, anyone who is anyone in mma must know BJJ to compete. Hughes isnt stupid, he has been training submissions for years, but unlike Gracie, he doesnt limit his skills to one thing. That is the one deciding factor imo, Hughes is multi-dimesional and Gracie isnt.

I dont believe Hughe's strength will play that much of a role in the fight, Gracie was fighting before weightclasses, and taking on men like Dan Severn. Hughes looks to be in great shape, and you know how they train at Militech camp, he will be a finely-tuned monster for the fight. Remember though, he is used to fighting 3, 5 minute rounds, thats what he trains for. Gracie on the other hand was fighting when there were no rounds, or timelimits, they fought until someone quit or got knocked out. He was fighting multiple fights a night, something that would be unheard of today.

Also, dont think Gracie has been sitting on the couch eating potato chips since he left the UFC, he is still actively fighting mma overseas and is training harder than ever. Do I think Gracie can really compete with Hughes? No, but its not going to be a one-sided fight either, Gracie can defend himself, and he is by no means a slouch. The only way I see Gracie winning this fight is if Matt foolishly resorts back to his wrestling, and tries to take Gracie down. On the ground, Matt should be able to dominate, but it will only take one mental-lapse for Gracie to end the fight. 99% Matt wins, but doesnt dominate because he is being extra-cautious, 1% Gracie catches him in a submission. Its going to be a good one, and theres plenty of folks from both sides of the fence, alot of people are gonna go home rich men

 

ya'll are crazy...who cares how strong huges is u dont think Royce has fought stronger and way bigger guys than the 5'10 165lb matt hughes? If yall followed the sport from the start you would know that gracie for 1 used to fight 3 opponents a night (talk about stamina) and the guys he fought like kimo, severn, shamrock, remy pardue (sp), keith hackney all outweighed and out powered gracie..to no avail he had them all tapped. There's more to it than pure force and strength. As owners of APBT's you should know the one thing involved that favors gracie in this match is pure HEART...if gracie does happen to lose this fight it will either be by refs stoppage or Ko because unlike hughes ..gracie wont tap out/give up.
Gracie wins by submission!

 

Shamrock got a draw in a super long fight with Gracie although I thought Shamrock might have won. Hughes is totally an all around better fighter than Shamrock. Gracie still believes that BJJ is the be all end all. I believe it it required for defensive reasons so you know how to avoid allowing yourself to get submitted but it isn't the only thing you need in your arsenal. Hughes is stronger and more well rounded and I see the fight ending in Hughes favor. People claim that submissions are Matt's weak spot but he's only been submitted 4 times in 42 matches? He's submitted 18 of his opponents. He started as a pure wrestler but has evolved into a total fighter. Gracie was in his prime 10 years ago and he's fighting a man IN his prime. Hughes all the way... and 440, I've been watching UFC since the beginning I was renting tapes since they started releasing them.

Royce. Technique vs. Brute Force. I predict Hughes will make a mistake, realize it, get nervous, shoot, get caught in Royce's guard (he's not getting out!). I have personal experience with the way Royce rolls, it's perfect and fluid, you make a mistake and it's your last. I also believe Royce is more mentally prepared - that's his house and he's comin home.

B: Hughes will always be a wrestler (you can see it every so often especially in the way he hits his rear-naked). He has the natural physical advantage, but when people get scared they revert back to what the know, I think he'll get caught if he does that. Wrestlers tend to have a few bad tendencies, i.e. going to their stomaches (it's almost too natural for them), muscling out of holds and a constant fear of being on their backs (goes along with the stomach thing).

 

no 14Rock, im in UT. I am lucky and get to meet all of the big namers, they all come down here to train for fights. Joe Riggs, Alessio, Jorge Gurgel, and Joe Stevens were all just down here training for their fights @ Horns gym. I know from 2nd hand experience (luckily i wasnt rolling w/him LOL - just watching)that Matt has good submissions/defense, and good stamina. Billy Rush/Jeremy have the hardest/longest conditioning that i have ever seen (the regular guys usually end up vomiting LOL)

I wasnt just saying that Matt's ONLY thing is his strength, he is a great all around fighter. Though i give credit to Gracie for starting the UFC, and making a huge name in the sport, i dont care for him at all. I have met him as well, and wish i hadnt (he was an arrogant jerk).

We'll see what happens, but unless Matt makes a foolish mistake (which i HIGHLY doubt), i see Matt w/his hand up at the end of the night

 

Matt huges all the way. Matt is to much of an all around fighter for Royce. Royce is used to beating one dimentianal fighters like himself. Matt Hughes is not a one dimentianal fighter.

 

I think Matt will beat Gracie but you neva know in MMA anything can happen especially with Royce Gracie he can get in a rear naked choke that is where Matt hughes weak spot is.

I can respect that statement, Gracie does have heart. Hughes is far from being a cur himself though! Two fights that stick out in my mind to showcase that was between himself and Carlos Newton, and Frank Trigg. Both times Matt was damn near unconsious (I believe he did black out in the Newton fight) and there was no sign of quit in him. He didnt tap, he kept his whits about him and came back in a devastating fashion. If we are debating heart here, I think it needs to be said Hughes is not a tail-tucker, and I believe both fighters will go until the refs stop it.

Miss conduct-you nailed it, I dont like Gracie's attitude at all either. Everyone fights until the ref breaks you off, to quit before that is dangerous. However, Gracie is well-known to tweak that hold for 2-3 seconds after the ref is pushing him off. Stupid head-trips like that could end a fighters career in that extra 2 seconds.

Its going to be a hell of a fight, no matter which way it goes!

 

I believe Matt will win. Royce is not rusty. I believe Royce can submit Matt.(He was choked out by BJ Penn). I am pulling for Hughes, Royce is ready to be defeated, and it may as well be by the best fighter of this time.

 

Man I Cant Even Guess But I Bet Its Good.

 

LOL my BF learned that the hard way. He was absolutley destroying the guy, he took him down, had got 1/2 way up to strike him (so his knees were off the ground) and the guy upkicked him in the face (which is illegal) the ref came running in with his hand out saying that the guy couldnt do that - while my bf looked over at the ref, the guy threw on a triangle 45 secs before the end of the round. It was on way tight and was going out so he tap'd (better than getting a 30 day suspension for blacking out).

Sucks too, the guy couldnt even go on to the next fight bcuz his ribs were broken (quiter! lol), so my bf got to go on, but its still a L on his record.

So know he doesnt stop till the ref pulls him off!

 

I dont think betting Royce out by calling him a rusty old man is very wise...some rusty old men can teach you a lot while whoopin your ass. Gracie wins in the first round by rear naked choke or a gi hold. Huges will lose. I dont see it going long regardless though, Royce is too experianced to let it drag on and Huges wont be able to break down his defenses fast enough before he finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time or just gets tired figthing Gracies superior blocking and ground game and cant defend himself any longer. Mark my words Gracie wins.

 

I actually think Hughes will take this one,, but will get his when George St Pierre gets his mitts on him.
