To answer your question on why the purest " Alligator dog" on Mr Hammonds yard was not black is simple.
It's all about the math & the Monk Gregor Mendhal therory of breeding.
This is just a primary example of how genetics acually work.
Not only did Mr Hammonds state it in an old gazztte article but any one who has bred a pure strain of dogs understands the math that's involed & the whole purpose ofthe 4 generation pedigree,known as the Breeders copy.
The 4 generation pedigree is less desighned to just see the names in the pedigree but the math on how much blood is being used.
And anybody that had bred a pure strain realizes that even 25% or less of a different blood will give you a completely differrent dog.
Just as Tudor's Dibo is Red/ brown and alot of Eli dogs, heavy bred Dibo are black, it's that small % in a dog that can be the dominant trait in it's genetic make up.
Going back to the Monks therory, that dogs may look like but carry this geene , a dog may be one color but has a dominant blood of another color.
So just because a dog may be 93% of a certain dog, paper wise , the dog it self is dominant of the 6.25% left over.
That dog was bred heavy on alligator but still had others dog in it to even create the breeding.
Alligator couldn't breed to himself. Nor did the dogs he came down from.
And It's the outcross blood or a dog in Alligators 4 geration that the dog disscussed, probably the white with lemon patched female, that too after that small % in it.
There are 32 dogs in a 4 generation pedigiree. The least amount is 6.25% but occasionially it's a domainate trait or dominate hybred of it & the dogs that are bred heavy on the desired dog.
Breed heavy on a black dog , but one of the dogs the black dog was bred too or that's up close in the balck dog itself in his 4 generation will dominate the pup.

Well shit I guess somewhere along the lines the best dog out of a litter wasn't black. And since he was best they bred it, and since he wasn't black he prob produced a good with of offspring that weren't all black.... You go from there you may end up with dogs that don't throw all black that much. Idk I'm no expert but maybe lol

 

But, as has been stated, unless your GH and their your dogs.... Who really cares... Lol except for you guys who have it!
