Well I have no clue about this NILF thing. I will agree with Michele. It must be dealt with immediately! My pup has growled at my wife and kid once or twice and I guarantee my puppy regreted it dearly! I would bet the house that it didn't happen again!

This is something that needs to be nipped in the bud, Any dog will test the waters just like any child will and so you can keep things in order you need to let them know from the get go that your the boss.

I myself wouldn't crate the dog when they do something like this, The crate is for sleeping and such and no need to get them thinking that every time they get punished they get the crate, If that happens you will have a hard time getting them in there when you need to take them someplace or things of that nature.

What I would do is if they do it again walk over there while staring them down take the dog by the scruff of the neck and in a stern voice say no and give them a swat on the hind end, Don't swat the dog hard but just swat it like you would a child when you catch them doing something they ought not do. And if the dog puts up a fight when you take him by the neck just keep a hold on and fight him back, I can't tell you how many times I have done this with pups and it always works. I just hold them and get em over on their back and in a stern voice say no and just hold em there till they quit fighting, They may do it a few times but after a few consistent rounds of this they won't do it again.

But even though they are just puppies you do need to get a handle on it so they don't get worse on you as they get older, Not only will you enjoy the company better but you will be able to handle them much better which will be a plus as they grow.

But Cooter Michele knows a good bit about the breed, She has more devotion to the dogs than a lot of folks that own them already. Not a doubt in my mind that when she gets her place she will make a fine bulldog owner, ;)

what kills me is why is this even a question for aomeone that got one dog liked it so much
they went and got the brother

I think you should read the NEW DAY THREAD

    ASAP

my answer to the post is get rid of one of them cause things are only gonna get alot more complicated for you having two males of this breed and not know how to controle a pup
but this is just my thoughts on the whole thing

i would of corrected him too.. not crateing him,, roll you up a newpaper and pop him good with it.. the biggest mistake someone can make is not showing him who master is. Never tolerate it as a pup because it could turn into alot more later when he's grown

its a pup, you just gotta check him. Food agression is normal. If you cant fix it then thats when you should worry but usually not to big a deal

I definitly subscribe to the good slap school, they are dogs after all and thats what they understand, mollycoddling a dog will get you no respect and lead to all sorts of problems with general handling of your dog.

Old Timer has it bang on, scruf of the neck, hold him ther till he stops fighting you, a good slap, dont let him away until total submission/avoidance, use lots of eye contact

Physical discipline isn't always necessary. Smacking a pup doesn't always get a point across. Not saying there isn't an occasional moment that one wouldn't want to swat their misbehaving pup, but there are other options without utilizing it. Aversion training methods are becoming more obsolete and less useful with more positive methods available - including NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free), etc.

I do happen to use an altered version if NILIF in my house - the dogs earn what they get. Either basic obedience or something else - it makes for more focus on me and a reminder that I'm the one who supplies the goodies they like (especially with it being venison season with LOTS of raw goodies to behold!). It CAN be a valuable tool, but the youngster does need to learn it's incredibly inappropriate to smart off as well. Every puppy earns a "Come to Jesus" meeting over a high-value goodie at some point in their youth - it's how they learn.

  11. Heres the thing. Its not the fact that i "liked it so much" its the fact that his condition was horrible. Yes, i already had one but again..his condition was HORRIBLE!!! Maybe i should have let them starve him to death and let them continue their method of raising him. Since they didnt want him to begin with..i shoud've turned a blind eye. Shit it wasn't my dog but excuse me for feeling bad for the lil guy, excuse me for thinking i was in the position to give him a better home then the one he was at. Shit, since we got him.. his health improved, hes eating well and other stuff but im the bad guy? Yes, i am kinda ignorant but thats part of the reason i signed up to this forum.

now as far as me not being able to "control a pup"....nah, thats not it. hes hyper, not aggressive...yes im still learning. but frank let me ask you this: Was there a learning process for you when you first got introduced to this breed? Were you ever ignorant when you began with this breed?

Don't take everything to heart. Take the educational information and leave the rest:)

When you give your dogs their treats or bones (only raw), feed each in their own crates so that there are no problems.

Feel free to implement NILIF into your training or, if you see some other methods that will work, implement those. :)

thats no reason to give a pup a home I only get a dog if I want it

yes there was a learning process for me and I only had one pup
not two one is enough to learn with

    thats what Im saying

frank youve seriously gotta get over your , new day thread. it wasnt that great.
sure it had some very good points, but there were just as many bad ones.

and there is no relevance to referring old mate to that thread from here it wont stop his pup from growling at him by reading your thread.

there have been plenty other suggestions here that will help the op, but maybee you can give some suggestions to help that, instead self promoting propaganda.

alright then JY tell him dont read the newday thread

but I still say the best thing to do is to only have one pup for a new comer it to many bumps in the road for a person to deal with that doesnt have a clue about a pup growling. LMAO

I wonder what they will do when/if they get into a scrap. HHHMMMMMmmmm?

true enough he gave the second pup a good home I commend him for that
but this home should have only one bulldog
in two years if they are still madly in love with this breed buy all you want
atleast you will know what to expect

One dog is all it takes to figure it out:D

BUT WHO CARES WHAT I THiNK:cool:

Well I think Frank is right in the fact that this will make things harder for you but do know that it is not impossible, Your already on the right road by asking for advice that is the best thing you could do and never try and just make it up as you go, Always ask if you don't know.

Now it may not have been the best thing to do from making things difficult for yourself but that aside you now have two dogs and from the pictures I have seen of the little guys you are taking good care of them, This is a fairly common problem and if you listen to the good advice you can handle it.

Everyone has to learn how to handle things in life and this is just another one of those times, But with some common sense, Some good advice and vigilance on your behalf I am willing to bet you will do as good of a job as anybody in taking care of your animals. :)

If you don't already have a breakstick, send ColbyDogs a PM. He is selling them. Here is some information on breaksticks:

    What is a break stick
A break stick is a device made to be inserted in the mouth of a pit bull (behind the molars) to gently pry open and release its grip on an object or another animal. This is a safety item every pit bull owner should possess.

Why Every Responsible Pit Bull Owner needs a Break Stick
Because the pit bull has been bred for their fighting abilities, they can inflict serious injury to other dogs if the fight is not broken up quickly and efficiently. Even the most well-behaved pit bull could potentially fight one day. A break stick can easily help you get the pit bull to release another dog. This, in no way, means the pit bull has "locking jaws". That is a myth. Pit Bulls have the tenacity to hold on, and the break stick gives the owner the ability to get the dog's jaws open. Keep in mind that most dogs fight differently than pit bulls. The pit bull will get a solid grip and then hold and shake. The break stick has been designed to break their grip.

How to use the Break Stick
Insert the break stick behind the molars where the gap is found. Turn the break stick. The turning action should open the dog's jaws enough so you can pull the dog back by the collar.

Secure the dog the stick is being used on. Straddle the dog with your legs. Squeeze them around the lower portion of the body. The back legs are essentially the drive train. Strength come from the rear legs. (shaking / tugging) You want to immobilize the back legs to prevent the dogs from moving/turning to avoid the stick. Grab the subject dog by the scruff of the neck. ( Back of neck) then insert the angled end between the opening in the rear of mouth. ( molars) If the dog has hold of another dog, there will generally be a space. In the instances where an exceptionaly hard biting dog leaves little room for a stick, try to work it in when the dog changes position or holds. Stick should be made of good wood (IE: cocobola), plastic or fiberglass. Not metal, as it may hurt the dog and break teeth. It should be angled like a door stop. ( Hammer handles break) The twist is the key.

Dos and Don'ts of break sticks
Please do not attempt to use a break stick on other breeds of dogs. Other breeds, when in a fight, will usually do alot of snapping and biting instead of getting a solid grip.

Try to practice and get comfortable with the break stick before you actually will need to use it.
