why did APBT's get larger

Personally, I believe they the apbt got larger because of better nutrition. Though I have a question. How come no one is taking into account the height of the dog? I see large famous dogs like mayday etc. being thrown out. Though I think one has to remember that mayday wasn't that tall of a dog. He was just pure muscle and had the physique of a true bulldog. If you look at pics of him with his handler, you'll see that at the withers, he is just below his knee. This is the samething with a lot of other big dogs such as ken allen's tornado. If you watch a footage of the dog, you'll see that tornado was a really short dog, but she was 51 # I believe. Some may say that's small, but I think that is huge for a female. Though in the end, they are just like humans. Some people are 5'8 but can be just as heavy as someone that's 6'. Though in the end, I really just don't care. I care more about the size of their heart and game than I ever will about size, looks, etc. Now as for the "the bigger the dog, the bigger the dog comment" somewhere up there, I disagree. Mayday was no cur, nor was Tudor's Black Jack Jr. or Colby's Pinscher, etc. There are good little ones, good medium ones, and good large ones.

Also, one should never compare a dog that isn't from the same weight class. Though if we were to do so, let's compare mayday against barracuda. Mayday is the bigger, faster, and stronger dog with more mouth. I'm sure mayday would go through barracuda. Now I'm not saying barracuda would cur out, just that he is going uphill. Now if you compare chinaman against that rednose dog, I believe Ch. Ceasar, well Chinaman was the smaller dog, but he was naturally more athletic and after the big dog lost his air, chinaman went through him. I think because, well naturally, the one that is bigger, faster, and stronger will win, that is the reason for the sudden fad of the large sized dogs. Let's face it, the dog that is faster and stronger will most likely come out the winner. This is why there are different weight classes. However, I'd also like to point out that I'd rather take the losing dog that's still scratching then the bigger, faster, and stronger dog that is a cur at heart.

About the weight swing within litters; I've noticed that pups raised in the house as pets ALWAYS get bigger than dogs raised outdoors on a chain or in a kennel. Not sure why, but definitely a trend I've noticed. Maybe it has to do with outside temperature extremes, and house dogs generally receiving more food and better care???

Nothin' has changed the dogs don't care how big or small they are! Its not the size of the dog in the fight ,Its the size of the fight in the dog:D

I don't think it is the temperature extremes, I think it has to do with exercise. A dog on a chain is more active than a dog that's indoors. A dog that indoors when bored will walk around to another location and then lie there. A dog on the chain will hit and lunge whenever an animal walks by, will dig (my dog digs holes all day when on the chain), and some dogs will even fight the chain by biting and pulling at it. Unfortunately, this can mess up their teeth but it is essentially a spring pole to them. I don't think a dog indoors necessarily receive better care, love, or food etc.

The genral public find it macho to have BIg dogs.... I had a lady come up to me to tellme how swole up her female black lab was whilei was walking one of my dogs.. and she put out her arms and puffed out her chest. i saw her husband walking this thing and it looked like peg legs with a cow's body..... little off topic but i was laughing my ass off.... i get all sorts of people askingmehow big my dogs are gonna get... i got so and so at home and he is 100 pounds.... just goes on and on and on

I don't think the breed itself got any bigger you still have asshats with the bigger is better mentality classic BYB train of thought. But those who are breeding to the standard are not producing monster's they are keeping them well within the standard and breeding for gameness which is what these dogs should be bred for anyway:).

Well to me, a stud above 55# is a monster and a female above 50# is a monster......how often do you see a conditioned stud and female above 55 and 50 #? I know some say that 55# and 50# is small or average though, but I think they are huge.

My Pups sire is 58lbs he is also a heavy mayday dog lol some bloodlines throw larger dogs mayday is one of them. But even still I personally don't think 55lbs is a monster it's still within the breed standard on the larger side for a game dog but still not a monster. I guess it just depends on the breeder.

Here is my pups sire he is 58 on the chain conditioned would probably be around 50 lbs I don't think he looks like a monster dog

Keyword being Mayday, a 100% apbt line known to throw big dogs. The problem with the modern "pit bull" breeders is that the majority the public buys from are buying big dogs from Bully lineage. We all here know quite a bit more than the average owner, but to the newbs trying to get into the breed, they're responding to ads in the paper and internet, and I'd venture to say ~80% is buying garbage bred hippos. It's a sad state, this forum is one of the last hold outs, and that's why I stick here.

I agree 1000% I wouldn't touch that crap with a 10 foot pole .. Most people don't know what a real bulldog even looks like. In a sense though it's better that the general public doesn't own a bulldog anyway let them have their big 100 pound mutts. I personally think the less people who own and breed bulldogs the better our breed will be.

I have nothing against a 100% proven big dog. While I do prefer the averaged sized dogs because, well in my humble opinion, there is more competition there, I am a fan of many a large monsters including mayday, black jack jr, colby's pinscher, barracuda, etc.

I fully agree with the garbage bred dogs that are, unfortunately, what the public holds to be an apbt.

i believe that there has always been the larger dogs from the begining and when the people emigrated to america they needed a dog that cold be a guard, work on the farm and such where as where im from in staffordshire we had the slightly smaller dogs as the people were very poor (mostly), in terrace houses big families in 1 house so a smaller dog was a lot easier and cheaper to keep but even in parts of staffordshire there were different stamps of dog on my granmas side as the rest of my family came from dublin her grandad used to keep and breed them and a lot of people used to keep close families of dogs through different families you would get small stocky ones and larger more whippet like with block heads in the next town but i do agree there is more larger dogs in the petbull community than there was in the past mostly through the look at me im hard as were seeing with the monstrosities that are ambulls as a few decades ago it was the rottwieler and doberman the idiot off the street wanted

you think it may be that the size of byb dogs has gone up because of the many outcrossings they do? vs gamebred dogs that usualy keep the line tigh?

I always thought the pitbulls got bigger than the early english staffy's because they probably got put back over the old bulldogs (american bulldog). from what I read they existed in the states while in the uK they became the modern bulldog and had more or less disapeared.
Has to be some new blood thats been introduced to gain size over the the english staff.

I had a pitbull that was 47kg, the others from the same litter were normal size. But I'll never get another that big, they end up blowing cruciate's.

you got some people who believe the apbt should be a sllim athletic built 30-40lbs dog and you got some that believe the apbt should be compact with a lil more heay blockier build 70-80lbs dog...the truth is it varies inbetween...size has never determined a dogs gameness or drive...theres nothing wrong with having a nice looking well built 75lbs apbt it doesnt make it any less of a dog than a wirey built 35lbs apbt...
