A Flick of the Switch

I am wondering if anyone else has ever experienced, what I shall refer to as the "flick of the switch"? What I mean by this is the coming of old age of a dog seemingly overnight. I have an old gyp 14 who has seemed to be drinking from the eternal fountain of youth for years, she was an old rough cobb to say the least. But it seems as if in the last few weeks all the old age hit her at once. Seemingly, all of a sudden she has serious trouble getting up, or walking around when a few months ago she was looking great, running, jumping and going crazy for the flirt pole etc now she can't run(had her out the other day she looked at the flirt wagged her tail and lay down looked at me with eyes that said "man I am tired" so we sat in the grass a while) her back end gives out constantly, cataracts and she can't hear(or is ignoring me bwahahaha), and has dropped a bunch of weight. It seems as if this has happened all at once. Now I know nothing is forever and I have no problems with her "moving on" I was just wondering if anyone else had witnessed the "flick of the switch" as far as age is concerned. Or if like most the age comes on slow and steady? What have you seen or witnessed as far as old age?

X2 with the cancer experience. Fingers crossed it's not.
A friend has one that's 18yrs, 4-5 years ago she went downhill over night (wasn't cancer). He started feeding a mainly bread diet and now she thinks and acts like she's 18 months. So hope is not lost.

Exactly what I was thinking. Too much bread can actually harm your dog, I'd try a different diet.

I'm going through a very similar situation with a bitch here. Pretty much suspect the same thing, cancer. I removed 2 quarter sized tumors out of her mouth last week, shes lost maybe 40% of her hair, has much smaller tumors still on her back leg, mouth and front legs. She's only 10 and she still has spring in her step. She still eats well and acts ok though. I'm going to take her in after Christmas to have blood work done. This all came one pretty quick starting about a month ago. At first I though possible food allergies as I've always had that issue with her and she is always digging at her feet and hiney but I've been through around 20 different brands in her lifetime as she would always develop an allergy like 6 to 8 months after feeding her something regularly. None of my other dogs have the issue and they are all down from her except 2. I know cancer runs ramped in dogs just as it does in humans. I'm not a betting man but I'm pretty sure diet is the #1 cause of many different cancers. In both human and dogs alike. Hope your old girl turns around but unfortunately time is not on her side at 14. The worst is when it's one your extremely fond of. Best if luck to you redwar.

Almost the same experience as redwar, same results as the others: cancer. Fourteen years is a pretty good run for a dog either way. Hope we're wrong in yourcase redwar.

With everyone experiencing cancer has anyone tried feeding their dog cannabutter I have an old Bitch I posted about a while back who I thought had mastitis turns out after the cycle of ceplehix or how ever its spelled she still leaks brown shit from her back nipples and now noticed small hard balls where her memory glands would be I would assume these would be tumors so only other though was I went out and feed her a small spoon of cannabutter before she goes to bed so far haven't noticed them getting any larger so this might be an option for people who live in medical states

I'm not an expert on the subject but I don't think cannabis is a cure all for dogs like humans. I read somewhere that when ingested it has a different effect on their liver than ours. From what I remember of the article I read your dog getting in your stash won't kill it but long term ingestion by the dog could cause death. I read up on it because I've got a little fucker that thinks he gets a puff every time I do. I also experienced same thing with one, had tumor removed from back at six years old and made it to eleven but she battle numerous occurrences of tumors during those five years.

Maybe there's all kinds of people over here by venice beach that be doing that they'll goto the dispensary with there pet in the waiting all kinds of shit they do I had an old lady tell me cumin the yellow kind fights cancer also but if the food is the cause of the cancer it would be a losing battle there's all kinds of angles to look at it from the shit in certain dog foods probably cause it I've read of old dogs living to 18 but back then they fed raw meat

At that age, IMO, diet or disease...

I would get some bloodwork done. If it checks out, then I'd adjust the diet accordingly.

As far as work, I'd only walk.

Ive gone through similar situations of aging dogs, great advice on the cannabutter/oil is a great way to ease the effects cancer but doesnt cure it...

A good friends mother was suffering from cancer and one of his friends at work bought a tesla gadget for 15k that he gifted my buddies mother...
The gadget shrunk a huge tumor to almost nothing and they believe it prolonged her life a bit, and coupled with cannabis oil and other holistics helped comfort her till god took her two days before mothers day of this year...ELECTROTHERAPHY...

    NIKOLA TESLA and healing

Diet has alot to do with both getting cancer aswell as feeding tumors, a holistic change in diet is only benefecial for all and the best preventive measure...

Years ago I spent over 2k removing a 20# tumor from my old bitch that I was very fond of, when removed she was riddled with tiny tumors and we were blessed another month with the dog... Alot of money for an extra month, but I wasnt ready to let go of my thirteen yearold dog...
Now I see the signs earlier and prepare myself for whats to come with old age and dont have to spend much money to enjoy the time we have left... It never gets easier the older they get as the bond is longer, but enjoy everyday with your dog is the best advice I can give...

Thanks for all the informative replies. I am in agreement with the cancer diagnosis. She has had a few growths but she chewed them off, one has come back bigger. I will have her vet checked again early in the new year. I have done the cannabutter/oil a time or two, and she slept for like two and a half days, it was freaky odd and then she was fogged out for a few days(I have dabbled with the dosage but thought it might just not be for her). Had her out in the woods the other day and she was two lengths ahead for over an hour. Sad truth is I have lost a few to cancer and I saw this one coming as well. I am watching her closely and wont let her suffer that's for sure. I may actually give her a big piece of bread soaked in some oil tomorrow and see if a day of rest on the darkside of the moon, with three little birds doesn't perk her up some. I hope it all works out well and easy for everyone's dogs dealing with age, health, cancer issues. Take it easy, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
